Major leaps in PS3 visuals for at least four more years

Insomniac Chief Creative Officer thinks the PS3 has the most advanced hardware: Insomniac Games is in a pretty unique position. The company isn't owned by Sony, yet is responsible for two of the PlayStation 3's most important Sony published titles: Resistance and Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com in an exclusive interview to be published tomorrow, Insomniac's Brain Hastings has given his opinion on the current state of PlayStation 3 development and what's still to come.

"The amount of action we're able to put on the screen at 60 frames per second really dwarfs what we were able to do a year ago at 30 frames per second," said Hastings. "What's most exciting is the way things are headed right now I think we'll see just as big a leap from our second generation engine to our third as we did from the first to second."

Looking ahead, he was equally as optimistic: "We're already seeing a big leap in what people are able to do with the PS3 now compared to a year ago, and we're going to see just as big a leap between now and the end of 2008," said the Insomniac Games Chief Creative Officer. "I think we're going to continue seeing major leaps each year in what people are able to do with the machine for at least three or four more years."

Can you say wow???... now we are listening to proOf of more than 60FPS in the coming years. PS3 is number 1. They are going to prove it. 120FPS PUS EVEN MORE ON SCREEN POSSIBLY? WOW Its gonna get crazy.

He is basically talking about dng the speed of FPS and amount on screen anually... That is so impreesive. JUST IMAGINE RATCHET DOUBLED FOR RESISTANCE 2 NEXT YEAR. HOLY BALLS. sERIOSULY HOLY BALLS. Sony is really about to shut everybody the fvck up.

Do u guys seriously not realize the 360 has peaked? This generation with ratchet is the closest the 360 WILL EVER COME. And no it serisously couldn't run ratchet like the PS3 does. IMAGINE THAT TIMES 2 FOR RESISTANCE 2. We are talking paw CPU power baby. The 360 has been leveled out... why do u think halo has so many framerate drops and only 640p. What about them saying the Orange Box literally used 94% of the 360's power. The 360 isn't going to keep up these next 2 years guys... if its truw what this guy is saying. He's literally saying we WILL see 120 Frames per second with a ton of things going on screen in the next 3-4 years. And if theres goin to be a HUGE difference next year... we could see that next year and even more in the future. The PS3 is not a joke. I'm so gald I'm getting my PS3.

As Nasim would say:
@ NASTY BOT Below:
You aren't funny cool guy... I didn't type 124 I clearly typed 120 as in 120 frames per second. If you read the article you could understand he clearly said the engine that runs at 60 FPS@ 720p will have another HUGE jump by next year... that means at least 90 FPS @720p . Think about about doin that over for 4 years. Yeah baby we are EASILY talking 120 FPS in the next 4 years. We don't know maybe really soon. Either way Sony already said they would eventually do 120 FPS and they will. Fanbot

You're running a bit low on bubbles there...and 124 frames per second? LMAO! Man, talk about drinking all the Kool Aid.

While I certainly would not hold my breath about this (the same thing that the PS2 was claiming, anyone?) BUT I hope he is right. I own one, so I hope to see it pushed to levels no one thought possible.

This is what Valve said about Orange box running on PS3 and 360.

http://www.maxconsole.net/?...

Who really knows what there current level of optimization means though.
But I find it amazing that they had it up and running without moving everything over to the SPU's yet.

first off...no developer is going to push for 120fps in anything other than a tech demo...nearly every HD television right now caps at 60hz...thats 60fps...anything more than that creates funny stuff on screen, or isn't noticable...

It was a very dumb PR statement on SCE's part...Even with some crazy parallel code maxing out the Cell, in which case it would be doing most of what a normal GPU would do also...it still wouldn't be practical because people would have to purchase a newer HDtv for it to even be possible...1080p is also only 60hz...they would need to market televisions with higher refresh rates, and start an all new standard...

its not going to happen...the RSX by far doesn't have the fill rate to do anything at that speed unless it is some game running on the Quake III engine...

if anyting...developers will still keep 720p @ 30 or 60 fps as the norm...and just push what is happening on screen...KZ2 is going to be running at 720p and a most likely 30fps...but the overall visual quality is going to be so astronomically high compared to what is out now it won't matter...that is where the power of the consoles should be focused...its not a PC...modern televisions are still capped at relatively low resolutions...they need to focus on animations and amount of processing happening at once as opposed to blazing framerates and highest possible resolutions...

JasonHenry...The PS2 showed most of its potential in the first year...the difference between launch titles like Tekken Tag tournament and games a year later...was not very big...they all looked great at the time, and Twisted Metal: Black is arguably one of the best looking PS2 games...and it came in just one year after launch...but it only looked marginally better than some launch titles...

the PS3 is in a different boat entirely imo...the difference between Uncharted and R&C when compared to launch games is huge...not saying that this will happen every year from here on out...but a jump this big is far different than anything in the past...

There are TVs already for sale that output at 120hz (Sharp and Samsung make some I believe). However, I don't see game developers putting their efforts simply toward higher framerates. The human eye can barely detect the difference between 60 and 30 fps (it's really dips in framerate that become obvious to us), so using processing power to increase framerates to 120fps would be kind of a waste.
As Kleptic states above, it would be much more valuable (as well as more likely) for developers to put their efforts toward increasing quantity and quality of on-screen elements and things like physics and AI.

"I think we're going to continue seeing major leaps each year in what people are able to do with the machine for at least three or four more years."

You can say that about every console that was ever made.

NeonSkull6432d ago

true but i think the increase is going to be more dramatic from what has gone in the past.

Project: Horned Owl Review

From the mid-1980s to the early part of the 2000s, light gun rail shooters were a staple in both arcade and home system gaming. Arguably, the genre started to really hit its stride in the mid-1990s. While games like Time Crisis, Virtual Cop, and House of the Dead, among others, dominated both the home system and arcade space, some one relegated to only home game systems. Today, we’ll be talking about a little-known cult game published by Sony called Project: Horned Owl. This game was developed by Alfa Systems, and all in all, this is a fun game.

"Players can now hide system apps, pin favorites to the list, and reduce the number of tiles displayed. This update is part of our ongoing effort to make Home more personal, flexible, and responsive to feedback."

This is welcomed, i like a less cluttered home screen.

Oh look no further than the "Upcoming layoffs at MS" topic. It will easily top the Hottest of the week.

Special guests like Mr. Dead might also show up. You just watch.
