I think only the Half Life team were all original Valve employees everybody else were Indie or Modders.

Indie Developers are very very successful on the PC with the help of Steam!

Valve is an independent developer, and as such, I believe they would count as 'indie'.

A lot of maps in Half-Life were designed by modders...I remember they had a contest with the WorldCraft Engine (haha, remember that?...Old-school) and the winners would get a chance to join the team and help finish the level designs in the first Half-Life.

I don't get it, I don't get as much fun with any other game, as I do with CoD, me and my 4 buddies can do an all nighter of CoD and just laugh our heads off and have a good time.
I can't do that with many other games out there, Battlefield is too serious, and Gears of War is too.

I want to go back to the time where people played a game for how fun it was, not for 'which game is better', everyone has become sheep. Jump on the Battlefield 3 hype train, all aboard. It's honestly disgusting to watch. I'm still going to be buying BF3 and MW3, but I know for a fact that i won't have as much fun with BF3, mainly because there's only 4 to a squad, and there's 5 of us friends.

Anyway, that's my verdict, hate all you want now. :)

Dude, you can group up in Battlefield 3 with your five friends...coordinate as multiple squads if you want. The game has a ton of squad options.

Me and my buddies play Arma2 which is as hardcore as it gets but we have tons of fun pulling all nighters.

But if COD makes you happy then play it bit try other games.

The thing is though games like COD and BF are fun. They may be just who can shoot the other guy the most or who can defend X but there reason why they re successful is because they are fun to play. We should support indie games and some do very well. The thing is though you can't tell someone to have fun with one game and not another. Mindless FPS are fun and that is why they are popular. COD hit the nail on the head with making something fun to play.

I would recommend Red Orchestra 2. That or the Project Reality mod for BF2. I've had so many good times with both of those and I used to be burned out on the killstreak style of gameplay. Just be prepared to hear alot of whining from the RO1 elitists. I've never heard such a childish bunch of 4chan and goon wannabes.

I mean the reasons people don't like COD have nothing to do the actual gameplay. In a sense MW1 picked up where Goldeneye left off. Disagree all you want, but the casual nature and pure variety of both games makes it a fair comparison. Where they differ, and where perhaps this guy has one tiny point right, is that COD takes it self too seriously.

Who's to say that if Goldeneye was released with the advent of matchmaking it wouldn't have progressed the same way.

Well in some ways you have to respect the Cod series. A franchise that further plunged video gaming towards a main stream realm. Games like Mario GTA and Halo(Meaning Halo introduced fully functional online play on a console) among others have done this. Though Cod is a very tiring trend for us veterans who are fully aware of the industry then the average gamer of today.

With that being said Cod has opened many doors...but also closed allot of doors as well.

I enjoy cod. I thing it brings more fun to video games. If I play call of duty for a long period of time then go and play something else, I will appreciate a nice change that I get from playing something different.

It keeps other games fresh, I guess. I have a greater appreciation for other games because of call of duty which is definitely a good thing.

Saying perks kill for you is like saying that weapons kill for you.
They are just a part of the game, and they add to the strategy of the game.

Seeing another player first isn't luck. Map knowledge comes into play there... and seeing the other player first doesn't guarantee a kill either.

There is no perk that kills people when you die. There is a perk that kills people who impatiently run over dead bodies though.

... and the helicopters are easy to take down. Laughably easy if you're actually prepared.
They're only a pain if you try to ignore them and run around in the open, hoping that someone else might shoot them down.

FPS games still require skill. You just seem to be someone who can't adapt.

The game has a noticeable aim assist. That right there is enough reason to say that COD requires no skill.

I dislike when people say "you can't adapt." Adapting has nothing to do with it especially if I find the game easy. O_O

And to say that seeing the other player first doesn't guarantee a kill is a lie. The main reason why people camp in COD is because you die too damn fast. So sitting in a room and waiting for people to come to you will guarantee kills because you'll be able to see the player first and due to health and recoil being low in COD the player that entered the room will have not have time to react.

CoD = softcore game for casuals and CoD fans. Accept the facts. =/

I play on the PC, so I wouldn't know about aim assists.

... and although health is low, there still is plenty of time to react and fight back. I mostly run-n-gun with a pump-action shotgun or an SMG and campers are pretty easy to take down.
You just have to be aware of your surrounding and check the obvious camping spots.

That, and well, I play objective game modes most of the time, so random campers aren't that big of a problem for me anyways.

It doesn't make much sense to say that you find the game easy, then complain about dying too quickly. I'll admit that CoD is an easier game to get into than something like CounterStrike or Quake, but saying it has no skill is an exaggeration.
Games like ARMA or RedOrchestra have pretty low health. Are they also games that are made for casuals who like to camp?

look, game devs need to get creative and stop copy cod,gears or halo

although gears and cod are some of my fav. games ever I just don't want to see the same idea repeated in other games, games can get influenced in some areas but i see way too much copying

Call of Duty isn't to blame for anything, rather the developers who feel the need to go that direction in order to make profit, but then just end up failing terribly. If games like Deus Ex or Demon Soul prove anything is that if you make a good and original game, people will buy it. Also this believe that many developers have that a game needs to have multiplayer to be successful needs to go.

One other thing I've also notice is that the whole concept of "start small" has completely disappeared. When you are just starting off as a new team, you can't be spending a shit ton of money and expect your game to sell over million. Gamers don't know who you are. Chances are they are not going to buy your game unless they know your past history. Resorting to making a COD clone is in my opinion just desperation, which I don't think COD should be blame for. Look at Torchlight. They are the former dev. of Diablo and though their first project turned out to be a similar game they started small. Torchlight was extremely simple, no multiplayer co-op, no online play, decent graphics and they sold it AT $20. The game turned out to be good, had a very original theme and given it's price for their first project sold well. I honestly wish more developers would start like that. Here is another one for you, Amnesia.

The last thing I want to point out "Why we shouldn't be forced to support the indie developer." Here is fact. I'm a big supporter of indie games. I visit indiegames.com every day for the daily news and donate to indie companies on kickstarter or through a donation button if I think the game looks great, however there is absolutely no denying that 80/90% of indie games are indeed terrible. Sure there is always that one game that stands out or makes a breakthrough and is really good, but most of them are garbage and calling gamers evil for not buying it is completely unfair in my opinion.

Linear action games like CoD and GoW didn't spoil anyone's fun. For every linear shooter, you've got open world RPGs like Fallout and Elder Scrolls; action/adventures like the Assassin's Creed series, the Batman games, and the new Deus Ex; sports games like Madden and Fifa, arcade racing and sim racing games like Need for Speed, Forza, and Gran Turismo, puzzle games like Portal; and interactive movies like Heavy Rain, LA Noire, and even Metal Gear Solid.

Don't even get me started on the indie/handheld/ios markets. There's more variety in gaming now than ever before, and one could reasonably argue more quality as well. The author of the article should pull his head out of the sand, for crying out loud.

Clearly never played a game of Battlefield BC2 in his life. The only deathmatch mode is squad deathmatch, where you have 4v4v4.. etc. Given the non linear Team 1 Vs Team 2, it requires some pretty good teamwork to win. Then the standard modes aren't about getting kills at all. They are about capturing and securing points (conquest) or destroying the enemy object but not necessarily enemies. If he's going to hate on games, he should at least play them.
