RTS and You: What Makes Them Great

End of the Week writes:

"Everybody’s got a niche and one that I’ve been interested in for quite some time is the Real Time Strategy genre. It’s not as big as it used to be, but there are a ton of hardcore devotees who have allocated thousands of hours to games like Starcraft, Warcraft, and Command and Conquer. However, this doesn’t make these games necessarily good. Starcraft 2 was incredibly unbalanced and Zerg rushes pretty much screwed everything, and making a counter to it was extremely tough. It’s only one example, but after my first couple of multiplayer matches, I was truly disgusted with the game. So, below is (to me) the components that make a great RTS. "

I've always been terrible at RTS being a mostly console gamer until I got sucked into Starcraft 2 a few months ago n have to say that it is incredible game, I prob cant do the game justice trying to explain it to other people but I think the real key to a great RTS is balance, like in starcraft 2 there is next to nothing that is an 'ultimate strategy' with scouting theres always a way to do a counter this is why the pros can never do a series of games using the same builds for each game

Starcraft 2 is, without a doubt, one of the best games of any genere made in the last ten years, it stands toe to toe with giants like Crysis, team fortress 2, oblivion, halo, gears, uncharted, the witcher, mass effect, half-life. It is in fact, an amazing game for an rts, the single player story had more production values, better voice acting, and way better cgi cutscenes than 98% of all other games made in the last 15 years!

heck, it is the NATIONAL SPORT of korea!

It is one of the most deep games out there!

I'm a mid level gold player (translation, I suck) but I am still playing the game, daily almost, and still find new stategies and ideas both on my own and from pro games I watch. This is 14 months after the game came out and new builds are born daily!

Epic game!

Starcraft II is one of the best and most played games in the world. Crysis 2, Team Fortress 2, Oblivion, Halo, Gears, Uncharted, The Witcher, Mass Effect & Half-Life does not reach it's socks in terms of gameplay and e-sport potential.

Ok, Starcraft 2 is ONLY unbalanced when you dont know what you're doing. It's ALL about scouting. Knowing what your opponent has. You need to be scouting the field the majority of the time.

Even if you throw a single unit against their defence(s), it uncovers the fog of war and shows you what they have waiting.

You need units all over the map in key areas to spot any units trying to sneak around.

You need to know what units counter what. For example, if he throws Roaches at you, you need to pump out Marauders.

Learn the counters and scout more than anything else, and Starcraft 2 becomes quite simply the greatest RTS of our time.

Hopefully these get released on Switch and Playstation, along with Age of Empires. There’s a severe lack of good RTS games on both those platforms.

if only they didn't raise the price 500% last year.
