You're All Hypocrites: The Dead Island File Name Outrage

Offended by the Dead Island file name controversy? James Hawkins thinks you're a hypocrite. How many games in your collection, from God of War to Grand Theft Auto, include blatant sexism in their content? Likely more than a few.

Nothing wrong with the name being used in a game.....still if it gets the game more attention and sales it deserves then excellent....picking up my copy today hopefully

So... basically people should do nothing because sexism is common-place in the industry? Don't get me wrong, the author makes a few good points I guess. But it's exactly this kind of "do nothing" attitude that keeps sexism firmly in place in this industry.

Eiffel2593d ago (Edited 2593d ago )

Well not much you can do to remove it or keep it. There's sexism, racism, etc in different forms within medias. You can't really remove it. A lot of games, especially the critically acclaimed have these things. It's easier to just tolerate it, than raise an uproar over something inevitable.

ash_divine2593d ago

Fair Enough, But you said it yourself. It's EASIER just to tolerate it. Too many times we as society just settle and choose the easy way out. In my opinion, it's the cause of all (or at least most) of our problems. (including our poor financial state and such.)

I definitely get that it's difficult to change anything. But a big part of the reason it's so difficult is because no one is willing to try anymore.

So even if the outrage is pointless or futile, people will atleast accomplish more with that stuff than they would by not doing anything.

Eiffel2593d ago

Agreed, I actually wish there was less of it, I've had my fair share of friends and girlfriends who shared an ignorant, racist, or even sexist view that during which time I'd simply just tolerate it, but as I said before in an easier manner of things, it's difficult to change someone, even more so to protect someone from such views, namely children who can grow up with a mindset such as these, or by personal opinion. I agree it's wrong, and that tolerating it can be easier, but it's hard to do anything when we're living in a society where people have the free will to hate anything they want, a simple freedom of which they're entitled to, but as judgement it's conflicting and unfair.

KwietStorm2593d ago

Is it really easier to tolerate it? One could easily argue that it actually takes a deep strength to tolerate such things on a consistent basis.

ash_divine2593d ago (Edited 2593d ago )

I really don't see where you're going with that. Because it will always be easier to do nothing, no matter what the situation. Especially in cases, when people like the author try to convince you that doing the right thing is wrong or pointless.

Basically, think about it academically. It takes no effort what so ever to get a Zero on an assignment. That same thing applies to life.

It's not hard to do nothing, because you don't have to do anything.

Seriously though, between this and people complaining about Rachel in Resident Evil, I'm starting to think the new generation of gamers are all women or little boys who haven't quite hit puberty yet. It's all a joke but people nowadays have no sense of humour.

KwietStorm2593d ago (Edited 2593d ago )

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you, but what you just said is like an unconscious example of the problem, as far as the whistle blowers are concerned. The fact that we are supposed to find certain things funny, many times vulgar things, is a prominent showcase of the desensitization in our society. I'm not criticizing you at all, seriously, but there are always more people saying "you just have no sense of humor," and that is because a lot more is "acceptable" behavior/comic relief these days. Really has nothing to do with how old you are or what your gender is. Shit is just real loose this century.

ash_divine2593d ago (Edited 2593d ago )

I agree with what you're saying here. I definitely noticed that society is on a sort of downward slope when it comes to what's acceptable.

In fact, this is the exact thing I was talking about. People just choose to view everything as a joke and forget about it, because that's easier than caring. And then those same people wonder why our culture is in such bad shape.

stevenhiggster2593d ago

I agree with what you are saying but there are too many people who are over sensitive too. There has been low brow sex humour for centuries it's not a new thing for our generation.
I'm not saying anything is ok or wrong I just think some people just like to make an issue where there is none.
