Busty Liara Statue Causes Fan Upset

Bioware have shown off pictures on their Facebook of a new “Bushoujo” Liara T’Soni figurine created by Japanese figurine maker Kotobukiya and it’s safe to say, the majority of fans aren’t pleased.

Sex sells. Besides, is it really that much of a surprise? Look at the depiction of Miranda in ME2 and how many ass shots there were (and that tight black leather outfit... mmm leather, ahem), and look at how sexed-up Ashley Williams now looks from the pictures we've seen of her in ME3 compared to her in ME. This is only a figure after all, I get why people are annoyed but it's not like you have to buy it or pay any attention to it.

Yi-Long4614d ago

... I think it looks great.

Then again, I'm not over-sensitive to some slight 'over-sexualisation' (their words, not mine), and I don't feel having an appealing body detracts from other qualities a woman (or female alien in this game) might have...

LightSamus4614d ago

It's more that the character in the game never even so much as flirts openly. They're very shy and withdrawn and putting her out like this has obviously annoyed a lot of fans. Say they did the same to Miranda, it would be less surprising seeing as how open she is sexually in ME2.

gamingdroid4614d ago

I don't mind over-sexualisation either, but at least match the character to what we know them as.

If she was like that when the game was introducted, I would have no issue with it, but that looks nothing like Liara at all....

OdinFallen4614d ago

I agree with you, I actually enjoy the different look that it takes. I'd buy it in a heart beat if it released as is.

Getowned4614d ago

is it wrong i want to cuddle with that statue.

it looks enough like her to know it's her but some thing is off a bit..but i do like it nothing to be upset over.

pixelsword4613d ago

"she's" an alien...

...who know if her race can do that at will?

Vaud-Villian4613d ago

Art is an embellishment. This is their interpretation, not all art has to be source material strict.

MaxXAttaxX4613d ago (Edited 4613d ago )

I mean, people did "hit that" in the first game. Let's not pretend like this side of women doesn't exist.

2. It's not made by Bioware. It's a different artist's rendition who is known for doing this. Why should you expect any different.

snipes1014613d ago

Ehh, crap like this annoys me. Liara is nothing like that in the game and isn't even as busty as this statue suggests.

I don't think expecting a little faithfulness to the source material is being "overly-sensitive." She was never sexualized in the game...why now?

lastdual4613d ago

That some gamers complain about this just shows how out of touch they are.

Look at figures for Batman or Wolverine or any popular character and you'll find that there is a lot of variation, as hundreds of different artists all do their own unique take on the character.

This particular artist has given us his take on Liara, and now people complain that it's not a carbon copy of the game model? Why should it be? Stop complaining and be glad the Mass Effect universe is popular enough to warrant unique artistic interpretations like this one.

morganfell4613d ago

"This is their interpretation, not all art has to be source material strict."

I would agree except you are overlooking a major fact. The "their" in this case is Bioware. This figure is receiving official endorsement.

darthawesome904613d ago (Edited 4613d ago )

An ok statue. I don't think making a busty statue will make is sell better though unless people actually get off by viewing busty aliens. I don't see how people would be upset by this though.

P.S. - I'm getting really sick of stuff like this. Nobody can do anything without somebody or some group getting upset. USA "Home of the whiners"

AKS4613d ago

@lastdual

It's not like people are calling to ban it. Different artists are allowed to create their own interpretation, and we are allowed to call it crap and complain that it doesn't represent the character well.

I don't like it at all. It looks like a pervy tween boy's hentai fantasy. Liara is actually a pretty decent and likable character, and I don't like to see her represented in this cheap, sleezy way. Pick a character from one of the Dead or Alive Xtreme Volleyball games for that kind of crap.

DragonKnight4613d ago

When a person is offended by a figurine, you know that person has WAY too much time on their hands. Seriously? You're mad about a figurine? Man, some people need hobbies or a relationship or something. It's just a "toy" for goodness sake. There are more serious issues to be upset about than a stupid figurine.

Gurt_McSquirt4613d ago

Doesn't bother me. People are too sensitive these days.

snipes1014613d ago (Edited 4613d ago )

@AKS...thank you this is exactly what I'm thinking.

@lastdual...you fail to mention that batman has been around for decades and has been given time to breathe as a character before people took him in another direction. Plus, how many times have you seen him "sexualized?"

@dragonknight...I'm not offended by it, I just think it's retarded. Stupid. Dumb. Idiotic. It's not an issue of having "too much time on your hands" either. It took me about two seconds to decide that it looked idiotic.

To people saying that people are so sensitive...that's just stupid is no one allowed to judge things anymore? It's out there, people will either like it or hate it. I hate it because I hate it, not because I'm sensitive, but because I think it makes Liara look retarded.

If I want to go see a pair of clothed tits, I'm not going to go buy a statue.

DragonKnight4613d ago

@snipes101: "I'm not offended by it, I just think it's retarded. Stupid. Dumb. Idiotic. It's not an issue of having "too much time on your hands" either. It took me about two seconds to decide that it looked idiotic."

Fair enough, but why bother to comment on my comment if it didn't offend you? Clearly my post was meant for those who are just a tad too upset over a frickin' figurine.

"To people saying that people are so sensitive...that's just stupid is no one allowed to judge things anymore? It's out there, people will either like it or hate it. I hate it because I hate it, not because I'm sensitive, but because I think it makes Liara look retarded."

Judging something, and posting rabid hate, are two different things. A judgement is "well, it doesn't really look like the character we know, and for that reason I don't much care for it." But look at the comments on here, and ones shown in the article and on the facebook page. That's a completely different thing. Those people are close to wanting to gather a lynch mob over a stupid figurine. Honestly, it's a clear case of being oversensitive and overinvolved.

"If I want to go see a pair of clothed tits, I'm not going to go buy a statue."

If I want to see how the actual character looks, I'm going to buy the game and forget about some figurine.

CameronL994613d ago

It's more than obvious that the entirety of the nay-sayers and whiny complainers of this innocuous statue are all fat ugly girls with inferiority complexes.

cause that's not how Liara is. she's not some stupid sexed up character but she is a thinker a normal looking chick with brains.

This figurine makes Liara look like a Bimbo and the facial expression is not the smart classy determined look of Liara but more of the look of a Stripper on a pole pushing her tits together and like magic you throw money at her. Trust me I've seen that look a Million times and I have spent thousands of hours and dollars studying it.

If you ever watched the old Star Trek and Lt. Uhura was one of the sexiest woman on Tv at that time (Long leather hooker books and a mini skirt along with a I'm too sexy hair-do) but her demeanor, facial expressions, and speech made it clear that Lt. Uhura was not to be taken lightly of and that she knew her job thus giving woman respect way back in the 70's. She did her job very well and the crew valued her opinions as Lt. Uhura was an equal and not some Bimbo character (except that one episode where the aliens hypnotized Lt. Uhura into seducing the whole crew what a fap episode that was)!

So yes these bimbo characters and dolls to me discredit all the Smart and sexy woman out there today. Woman can be sexy and smart but oversexed characters loose all validity unless it's a show about hookers or strip clubs.

gamingdroid4613d ago

LOL... she is nothing normal looking being alien, blue and even in the game has rather prominent good looking female curves.

That said, I get what you are saying. In the game world, she is normal. In real life, she has fantastic curves.

DarthJay4613d ago

The entire purpose of this type of statue is to look like an anime big boomed bimbo. This is not new or original. It has been done with countless comic book and movie characters.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

This was never meant to be replica, to scale or anything else. The average Mass Effect fan is not the target audience. It is not meant to be a commentary on Liara's character. It is exactly what it is: a Bishojo statue of Liara from Mass Effect, just like the tons of others that came before her:

http://www.google.com/searc...

ATi_Elite4613d ago

Whoa i was totally unaware that it's a Japanese culture to make "bimbo figurines" of under age girls.

Eeeeew Yuk! Pedophile alert! Pedophile alert!
Bushoujo = Pedophile art I guess!

UltimateIdiot9114613d ago

Let's be honest, this part of their line-up clearly isn't targeted towards a crowd like you.

You sound like you'll much prefer their Fine Art line up.

I think that most of the people complaining are missing that point or Kotobukiya should have made the Fine Art version instead. Have you seen their other Bishoujo line up?

have always had big boobs not a issue and i play game to have fun not to look at fake boobs lol

mass effect 3 day one

Andronix4613d ago

I've played both Mass Effects and sure this figurine looks different because of the bigger breast, anime eyes, and provocative pose but so what? It's not meant to be a perfect representation of Liara. Bioware wanted a Japanese style that's why they went to a Japanese designer. DC comics regularly commission different artists to design statues based on different versions of the Batman. It doesn't change the 'real' Batman does it? Storm in a tea cup.

Winkle924613d ago

Yeah, it's not even supposed to be a representation of her character. It's more of an anime caricature. People way overreacted. Maybe they should release an "in-game" statue of her too so fans of the in-game version won't feel left out.

Anderson84613d ago

i didnt know breasts could make so many people unhappy... what has the world come to

Blacktric4613d ago

The problem is not the depiction, but this is the only official statues that will see the light of day for some time. They need to be accurate as they can be instead of having the artist's own depictions applied to them. If this would be something like a collector's edition statue that'll get to released besides the normal ones then I'd have no problems with it. And Miranda's big butt have nothing to do with the subject. That's how it was in the game and if they'll make a statue of her, it should be at the same size. For God's sake if they've made a Princess Leia statue with big breasts and over exaggurated hair and all that, I can't even imagine the fan response yet when same thing happens to ME, no one cares.

OhMyGandhi4613d ago

yes it does.
Liara was -incredibly- oversexualized...in the game.
why is this such a shocking and appalling depiction of her?

if she were the 'dominant strong female figure", why is she wearing low cut skin tight outfits, because she wants to show people how much of an intellectual she is?

otherZinc4613d ago

That's Liaras Party Outfit.
People need to settle down.
& Its Japanese art, what do you expect!

snipes1014613d ago

Concerning the tits thing, I was speaking to the people on here saying "whats wrong with a good 'ol pair of tits?" and things like that.

Personally, I wish this news wasn't so popular on the site, but it's here and big enough to be worth commenting on. Obviously, not every person on here commenting will be offended by it. People are just, like me, giving their take on it. That's what comment threads are for, to allow for different viewpoints on a topic to be offered up.

snipes1014613d ago

Alright I can see your point there with all of the hate and I agree with you, but it just seems that some people were over generalizing the issue claiming that everyone that has a problem with it is automatically being overly sensitive.

And in order to comment on this, I did not need to be offended. It is currently sitting at over 1000 degrees on here, so it is safe to say that it is being discussed from many angles. Plus, the purpose of a comment section is not to just have utterly like minded people come together and agree with each other, it is here to allow multiple viewpoints to come together and offer their perspective (thought the value of certain perspectives can at times be debatable).

Plus, you weren't offended, so following your logic I could theoretically be asking you the same question.

Catherine_8664613d ago

To all the people that say it’s just a figurine, art, not a big deal…I bet you’d react negatively if it was a figurine of Commander Shepard with a huge bulge in his pants. And the pants are so tight that you can see all the penile details, veins, glans etc

subtenko4613d ago

Idk why..but for a second I personally thought the title said Laura Croft...I was like...That doesnt look like LauraCroft!!....oh wait...LIARA *facepalm* hahaha

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave17d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan17d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
