Busty Liara Statue Causes Fan Upset

Bioware have shown off pictures on their Facebook of a new “Bushoujo” Liara T’Soni figurine created by Japanese figurine maker Kotobukiya and it’s safe to say, the majority of fans aren’t pleased.

Sex sells. Besides, is it really that much of a surprise? Look at the depiction of Miranda in ME2 and how many ass shots there were (and that tight black leather outfit... mmm leather, ahem), and look at how sexed-up Ashley Williams now looks from the pictures we've seen of her in ME3 compared to her in ME. This is only a figure after all, I get why people are annoyed but it's not like you have to buy it or pay any attention to it.

Look at figures for Batman or Wolverine or any popular character and you'll find that there is a lot of variation, as hundreds of different artists all do their own unique take on the character.

This particular artist has given us his take on Liara, and now people complain that it's not a carbon copy of the game model? Why should it be? Stop complaining and be glad the Mass Effect universe is popular enough to warrant unique artistic interpretations like this one.

Judging something, and posting rabid hate, are two different things. A judgement is "well, it doesn't really look like the character we know, and for that reason I don't much care for it." But look at the comments on here, and ones shown in the article and on the facebook page. That's a completely different thing. Those people are close to wanting to gather a lynch mob over a stupid figurine. Honestly, it's a clear case of being oversensitive and overinvolved.

If you ever watched the old Star Trek and Lt. It's not meant to be a perfect representation of Liara. Bioware wanted a Japanese style that's why they went to a Japanese designer. The problem is not the depiction, but this is the only official statues that will see the light of day for some time. They need to be accurate as they can be instead of having the artist's own depictions applied to them. If this would be something like a collector's edition statue that'll get to released besides the normal ones then I'd have no problems with it. And Miranda's big butt have nothing to do with the subject. That's how it was in the game and if they'll make a statue of her, it should be at the same size. For God's sake if they've made a Princess Leia statue with big breasts and over exaggurated hair and all that, I can't even imagine the fan response yet when same thing happens to ME, no one cares.

This is part of the bishoujo line of figures so it's supposed to look like that. For those that don't know, bishoujo roughly translates to "young, sexy girl". The female marvel and dc comics characters have these sort of figures too and I didn't hear anyone complaining about those.

I perfectly agree that the figurine is an awful rendition and most certainly does not remind me of Liara at all. The face is the worst part... any subtle features that might have been Liara's are gone. And her body is almost as bad... that is definitely not her's. I'm quite sure if she were real and saw that would would be rather annoyed. Then again I've never thought of the word "strong" describing Liara. She became cold and harsh in ME2... but I still do not thinks strong is an appropriate word for her.

This is the statue makers' own take on an established character. In concept, its no different than the various pieces of well-made fan art you see around the web where the artist creates their own interpretation of an existing character. And from what Ive seen, those are usually showered with praise even though 90% of the time, the female characters all have exaggerated physical features. So she has bigger tits? Thats a bad thing? Come one guys. Try to understand. Do you want the Mass Effect series to sell in japan or not? Each culture has it's differences and standards of beauty. Just like to many people in the west, Japanese video game character seem androgynous; the western game characters seem ugly to us who live in the east. I mean i can still appreciate female beauty, i'm just not sexually attracted by/to it. And with reguards to this statue tbh i don't really see the problem. I mean c'mon people get some perspective, its just a figurine at the end of the day.

It's kind of shit. Everything about the statue is wrong. Her face is awful and isn't well translated from the original to the new style. It just isn't recognizable. The breasts are obscene and she doesn't even look ready for battle. I don't judge Bioware for this, because it's not like I suddenly think: "OH MY GOD THIS RUINS LIARA AS A CHARACTER FOREVER!" That'd be ridiculous, since it's not an in-game change. But this statue is neither aesthetically pleasing nor does it capture the essence of the character, the universe, etc.

I guess it'll please SOME people, so that's good, right?
