Critical Mass: The Best Games Of This Generation...So Far

Game Informer: Time flies when you're having fun. It seems like it was only yesterday, but our current generation of console hardware launched nearly six years ago, with the release of the Xbox 360. Nintendo and Sony followed suit a year later, with the Wii and PlayStation 3. Since then, we've been able to enjoy some of the greatest games of all time. We're taking a quick look at the top 10 games of this generation, according to score aggregator Metacritic. While the site has its critics, it's tough to argue that the games on the following list are anything but excellent.

Still don't know how/why GTA4 got high ratings....

Cpt_kitten2631d ago

because its one of those games where if you don't give it good scores people will get just as angry same with call of duty

It may not have deserved so many 10/10's but at the very least should have been a high scorer - it is the first of the GTA series on this new generation and accomplished so much in terms of Graphics, Animation and for R*'s first MP outing was bad either :) While the gameplay didn't change much, I felt that everything else more than made up for it - story was pretty awesome too, a classic GTA tale.

And I actually quite like this list!

OcelotRigz2631d ago

In my opinion GTAIV deserved all the ratings it got and for me its one of the greatest games ever made. Sure, not everyone is going to like it, taste varies, but im still surprised nowadays at the number of gamers who feels its overrated.

Not a bad list at all, im glad Mario Galaxy got on there. Fallout 3 or Oblivion? COD4?

ChrisW2631d ago

I would like to ask the same about #5...

thebudgetgamer2631d ago

no gears is kinda dissapointing.

Ed_Gein2631d ago

Even more disappointing is the exclusion of Bioshock...

OcelotRigz2631d ago

Yeah, cant believe i forgot about Bioshock, one of the best gaming experiences ive ever had. Should be in the top 3 for sure.

Hulk Hogans Main Event!

Honestly, a list like this without COD4 is hard to take seriously.

I know it's popular to hate on COD these days, but MW1 is probably the single most defining game of this generation (not to mention it was actually quite good).

Megaton2631d ago (Edited 2631d ago )

Agreed. As much as I dislike CoD and Activision nowadays, CoD4 was a blast and a half. Not only was it good, but it was significant in the way it dethroned Halo as the go-to FPS for gamers and casuals alike, especially on consoles.

...and regarding the rest of the list; GTAIV should not be #1, and Mass Effect 1 > 2.

OcelotRigz2631d ago

I agree. Before COD got a bit tiresome as it is now for some of gamers, COD4 felt so fresh and kinda blew everyone away at the time. I never played online or really had any interest until i played COD4, but not only that, the singleplayer was pretty damn good as well.
It definitely deserves to be on the list.

gnb20032630d ago

Its not on the list because the author just went by metacritic scores (top 11 of this gen).

Not saying its right, just saying.

A little two much mario love for my likes both 1 & 2 come on, but personally i would slot gta iv lower & me2 at the top, plus a obvious disrepect to gears is shocking. Plus Assasins Creed II was & is one of the defining games of this gen imo.
