NGB: Has Microsoft Lost Touch With The Hardcore?

In 2011, Microsoft’s exclusives for hardcore gamers have hit an all time low. Just two significant titles stand out, Forza Motorsport 4, and Gears of War 3.

Compare that to the PlayStation 3′s line-up, with Motorstorm 3, LittleBigPlanet 2, Killzone 3, MLB 11: The Show, Yakuza 4, SOCOM 4, Infamous 2 (all already out), Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3, and it appears Microsoft are falling behind. A few years ago, it would have certainly been the other way round.

All the while when the most violent Gory FPS's and bloodiest Sword swing RPG's in the history of this generation are all thrown at us at once Plus a SIM Racer. LOL @ the article.

Everybody knows Microsoft has a 3rd party strategy. They have exclusives that don't directly compete with huge multi platform games in their respective genres(MS hates losing money). Those PS3 exclusives will get murdered going up against 3rd party games not to mention the ones that have already released didn't sell that well with no competition to boot.

Nintendo all 1st party priority(in house 1st party games strategy)

Sony 1st and 3rd party split priority that invests in studios(hardware and entertainment company)

Microsoft 3rd party Priority(software company that focuses on partner growth for increased mutual revenue earnings) MS has a lot of cash but they rely on their partners much the same way the do in the PC market. They see no need to invest in studios that could lose them money. They are the only company that focused on industry health. If MS had dozens of studios the game industry would be in serious trouble hense the

I couldn't find the actual article showing what MS said in their own words but they have had this strategy from the start of this generation because they said they knew it was the key to success. MS said this was the key to PS2's success and they were going to do the same.

*Not to mention the ones that have already released didn't sell that well with no competition to boot.

Cuz we have to many to choose from not everyone is gonna go and buy out every exclusive that is released.

Hey at least we get different exclusives every year not the same ones.

I guess that is why Microsoft does not make a ton of exclusives. Maybe they want to make a few that cater to everyone in their audience rather than make several that don't.

"They see no need to invest in studios that could lose them money."

That is totally untrue:

"They see no need to invest in studios that could lose them money."

I agree, that's why M$ close them all down even before they make a profit or even have anything to say about the matter. LOL

3rd party games may sell more than exclusives (No one's denying that's true) but exclusives is what sets the console apart from other consoles. Microsoft has nothing that sets their console apart from the PS3.As a gamer, you want to play exclusives and see the strength of that console.

You're thinking in terms of sales, rather than a gamer's perspective.

I feel very sorry for you.

EDIT:...Why do I bother. It's like talking to a brick wall.

jetlian3100d ago

because you wish it were true. MS doesn't have to prove they are different. All they have to do is provide what the gamer wants.

And thats been COD, Halo AC, gears etc.

M-A-R-S-H-A-L-L3100d ago

jetlian : I'm sure that most gamers who used to game on the 360 would strongly disagree with you, only because they want games other than the games you just listed.

jetlian3100d ago (Edited 3100d ago )

then why they still sell tons? Oh because gamers exist beyond n4g. And when all these games sell over 30 million combined on 360 i'll be proven right

FlashXIII3100d ago (Edited 3100d ago )

360 hate article and the resident 360 fanboy is on the scene. Lol though kingdoms you're like the last true 360 fanboy left. Keep fighting the good fight though while the rest of the former 360 fanboys who know how to open their eyes can see Microsoft for what they really are.

Smoking crack with fanboy goggles can't be good for your health. Most of Sony's 1st party exclusives sell in the 2mil to 4mil range which is quite good. But plz stop trolling it's not a good look.

kaveti66163100d ago

there are 50 million PS3 owners. Why does a game like Uncharted 2, which has won many accolades, only sell 5 million copies?

Death3100d ago

Infamous, Uncharted, and Resistance are all great games, the rest are kind of niche titles. More variety is always good, but it isn't like Sony first party games are stellar must haves. What happened to quality over quantity?

FlashXIII3100d ago

It's the niche titles which provide the quality over quantity. For me, games like Heavy rain and LA Noire provide some much needed variety in the endless cycle of action and shooter games.

Here's what folks outside of n4g don't get, outside of UC3, the games on ps3 this year lack broad appeal to the majority of the fanbase that support 360.

Motorstorm, LBP, Yakuza4, MLB , nothing against these games but they don't draw much appeal with most 360 owners, I think xbla titles like Bastion have more niche appeal, and a game Yakuza4 would be just another stat filler like Star Ocean along with many other 360 jrpg that went unnoticed.

KZ3, Soccom, inFamous, R3, and UC3 are the games imo 360 owners will take notice of. KZ3= good but not on Gears3 level. Soccom= poor game, inFamous= great game, no direct competition & R3=looks to be great, but reality is Halo Anniversary will easily be more appreciated by 360 owners. Now UC3 is the type of game I think most 360 owners want for 360 and if you don't have a ps3 its a game that makes you want one, but its not out yet anyway, so in terms of games released SO FAR this year I don't think most 360 owners and definitely not the ones I game with have seen any must have exclusives on either console SO FAR, this year. YES, Iam saying quality over quantity has been a important factor this year, just look at the data, 360 vs ps3 sold very well this year, sony forced to drop the price, even with their higher exclusive count, Gears3, Halo Anniversary, Forza4 will easily outperform ps3 exclusive software totals.

micro does not need to follow in sonys footsteps, no they do NEED more games, but not filler games, more highly rated IPs that fit the 360 demographic, the Viva Pinata stuff doesn't work, kinect has the casuals attention, xbla caters to the niche void, a UC/ Tomb Raider type exclusive would be great, that's why I'm buying it for my ps3, but for the most part 360 needs to continue to do what it does best, not try to offer game after game types like sony, which so far this gen has been met mostly with "meh", by the 360 fanbase.....if you totally disagree, then I bet you prefer ps3.

ShaunCameron3099d ago

Sony's 1st party games never known to be "must-have" material except Gran Turismo. They maybe of quality, but they didn't have that killer app like the games 3rd party developers blessed Sony with that really sold their consoles.

Grand Theft Auto
Tomb Raider
Metal Gear Solid
Final Fantasy
Resident Evil

LNDCalling3100d ago (Edited 3100d ago )

Agree entirely with the general consensus above ala Minato-Namikaze, marshow etc!..

Exclusives are a huge deciding factor on what console you buy or at least should be especially if you can't afford to buy both! (I wouldn't expect parents to subsidise a younger child living at home gaming on two consoles).

For me it was PS3 exclusives that made me decide to go PC/PS3 as it seemed the most sensible option.

Additionally, and this is a serious question I don't know the answer too, who makes more money, Sony Selling 4m 1st party games or MS selling 7m 3rd party games? assuming there's any difference at all.

FlashXIII3100d ago

This is a really good article actually and echos pretty much my feelings towards the 360 currently. When the article covered the first few glory years of the 360 everything looked so bright and actually helped me transition from pc only gamer to a proud console gamer.
