Digital Foundry vs. HD Remasters

Eurogamer: Money for old rope? Or newer, better versions of gaming's most celebrated last-gen classics? The process of bringing back vintage noughties console titles and revitalising them with HD visuals now seems to be big business, with a range of classic PS2, Xbox and even Dreamcast releases set for release in the run-up to Christmas.

HD "remastering" kicked off with gusto when Bluepoint Games ported over Sony Santa Monica's brilliant God of War games to the PlayStation 3. While the original releases worked fine on backwards-compatible PS3s, the new remakes were worthwhile in many respects: firstly, resolution was upped to native 720p with anti-aliasing applied, while the inconsistent frame-rate and lack of v-sync on the original games was mostly resolved, resulting in a smoother, more polished experience.

ouch!!

Seems like a large waste of money based on a few things from this article if true!

The first 2 splinter cells, while 1080p sometimes runs at 18 frames...ewww

They stated chaos theroy dips down to 20 and is dropped down to 720p.

"It's really difficult to come to any conclusion other than that these two titles were low-budget ports of the original PC titles with very little love put into them. "

Sad, you can get a better looking, better performing pc version much cheaper.

yewles15059d ago

They have 2 more pages of info, you know...

"Update:1080p is also supported in Chaos Theory, but bizarrely it is only activated if you specifically disable 720p on the PS3's XMB. A quick analysis of the output suggests that frame-rate takes a significant hit when this mode is engaged (the 30-35FPS average drops to 20FPS with sudden, occasional lurches back to 30) and 720p clearly provides the optimum gameplay experience."

...srry....my bad...i did only read the first page, still, the fact that they did not even improve on the pc versions that will run on your moms laptop and can be had for $3 a piece, still smells like a rip-off to me.

Im happy they are doing these HD remakes its like buying a Blu Ray of an older movie

Peaceful_Jelly5059d ago (Edited 5059d ago )

old movies on blu-ray look just like the DVD version. And in this case, ports like the Splinter Cell games are even worse than its original versions.

snake-OO5059d ago

old movies on blu ray dont look nothing like the dvd versions. just look at godfather trilogy, or5 maybe alien anthology on blu ray. theres a day and night different in quality.

nycredude5059d ago

yeah sure and the fact that you have agrees show how many ignorant people there are. In most cases older movies on bluray are remastered from original pristine print. If bluray was available back then that is the medium it would have utilize. They downsize many of the old movies to be dvd cause the tech just wasn't there. Master prints are of much higher quality than dvds.

LNDCalling5058d ago (Edited 5058d ago )

@nycredude and @Peaceful_Jelly NO... no.. no..

Do you realise what resolution movies are in their raw 'on-roll' format?? To give you a clue look at the size of the screens they were played on, and I don't mean the small multi screen cinemas there are now!

Movies were, back in the day, mastered to DVD because 90% of the resolution wasn't needed. So Blu-Ray allows them to retain more of the detail and resolution. I will agree some Blu-ray editions vary in quality from movie to movie but it depends on the original print.

The difference is night and day and if you can't see it maybe your some of the poor few who cant see the difference due to bad eyes, in which case you may as well game sub-HD too!

Edit: As an example raw 70's 35mm film per shot could be anywhere between 20 and 30 megapixels (double that for 70mm). Blu-ray resolves at a resolution of 2.1 megapixels so it can display around only one-tenth of a 35mm film's detail, counter in that BD's H.264/AVC encoding is around 30-50% more efficiant than DVD's MPEG-2 and you start to see the picture. Virtually all Blu-rays are 1080p, which is six times the resolution of DVD.

LNDCalling5058d ago

@nycredude I agree with you... the No.. no no's were for @Peaceful_Jelly and anyone who agrees! :)

Cam9774629d ago

The Splinter Cell:Complete pack is cheap! Hhhhhmmmmm.... I haven't got the space.

sypher4629d ago

I guess I'll try out Amy. Heard its terrible but £1.99 cant exactly go wrong.

LinLeigh4629d ago

Wish custome quest was on offer. Perfect Halloween game.

Sketchy_Galore4629d ago

Anyone in Europe who hasn't picked up Beyond good and evil HD yet HAS TO do so now. It was pretty unforgivable to not buy it for the full price but at that price you should have your console taken away for refusing to buy it.

The 15 top must-play co-op games [CVG]

There's always a loser in multiplayer games where you face off against some poor unfortunate staring down the barrel of your gun, but co-op gaming is about making love, not war. You'll love your friends as they save you from the brink of death, puzzle through problems together, double your capacity for mindless slaughter and rack up a bodycount in the thousands. Okay, so they're sometimes about making war.

I am playing MGS peace walker and I gotta say I am having blast with the co-op. it is the perfect co-op for me. I love it, especially the monster hunter X Metal gear.

omi25p4820d ago (Edited 4820d ago )

Splinter cell Conviction has terrible CO-OP.

humbleopinion4820d ago

What? The co-op campaign was amazing in SC:C, better even than the single player campaign and perhaps the most tactical of the SC series when played on realistic difficulty.

This list is quite nice in general, although it's missing on a quick fix of Castle Crashers - Perhaps the best 4 player co-op game I played in recent years.

omi25p4820d ago

Conviction its self is a disgrace to the franchise.

Keeping nothing from the previous games, The graphics were was than Double agent, The level design ment you HAD to kill everyone and the story was predictable Hollywood BS.

humbleopinion4817d ago

I have no idea what you mean by "The graphics were was than Double agent"... but graphics wise the game looked great.

I also don't have the first clue what you mean in "HAD to kill everyone", as I believe I probably evaded 50% of the enemies in the game (especially on the realistic difficulty where it's a good idea to just leave some of them alone).

The single players wasn't the best in the franchise but if definitely added some great new ideas that fortunately didn't keep the series stale with last-gen concepts that conservative gamers who don't want to see their games evolve so highly praise.

The only things I missed was the ability to carry bodies, and the spiesVSmercs mode in the multiplayer. But the co-op campaign made up for that.

CanadianTurtle4819d ago

I haven't looked at the list yet, but Borderlands 1 better be here.

Splinter Cell HD on PS3 Gameplay First Mission (HD 1080p)

@Ve3tro: "Ubisoft this week released the Splinter Cell HD trilogy for the Playstation 3, we’ve record footage for you to check out the new differences with the higher resolution.

We will also be having a look at the other two titles Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory in a few days along with a comparison video. "

Incipio5066d ago

Why are you on N4G? Shouldn't you be out snappin' necks and stealing important documents and sabotaging operations?

Paragon5066d ago

Haven't you seen my latest game? I don't snap necks and steal important documents. Now I kill everyone and make a LOT of noise. Oh, how Ubisoft has changed me.

badz1495066d ago

OMG man LOL! +bubbles! XD

Blaze9295066d ago

beware to all those who play their games with the Y-Axis inverted - all three of these games (SP, Pandora Tomorrow, and Chaos Theory) ship without the option to toggle invert or not.

So your only option is normal. Glad I found this out before I purchased. I can't play the game like that. Shame as I was looking forward to this for so long.

mastiffchild5066d ago

Really? Being left handed and rarely even considered by game devs when it comes to control schemes I find it amazing that you can't get used to a non inverted scheme-I'm sure you'd find it fine after a few hours/minutes of gameplay.

Just seems such a small thing to miss out on a bunch of games for especially if you were otherwise looking forwards to them. I generally end up using the default right handed control schemes anyway(so used to having them forced on us!)and am sure the non inverted y Axis shouldn't kill a game for you.

clank5435066d ago

I'm the same way, but I get used to it after a while. Going back to other games is when it gets tough.

Solidus187-SCMilk5066d ago (Edited 5066d ago )

Thats pretty lame. I like inverted, it makes sense to me that way. Its like using the joystick for Mechwarrior. I can play normal but id rather not.

Im also left handed but I cant play with any of the left handed controls even if I try, I have to use right hand controls. I never understood the left handed controls, but I use both hands for different things so im different I guess(write left, throw right etc).

To me a controller always seemed like it wasnt something that mattered what hand was your dominant one since you use both. But not having the option to make it inverted is not cool at all. Hope they patch that, then I might buy this someday even though I had the first 2 on xbox already.

Northtouch5066d ago

@ Blaze929 I made this mistake without knowing this a few days ago :'(

I just cannnot play when its not inverted vertically. I managed to pass the first level in Chaos Theory (just). Now im half way through the 2nd but struggling.

Raven_Nomad5066d ago

The lighting looks pretty good, but the character models look pretty bad still...

BeOneWithTheGun5066d ago

With all due respect, that looked better than half the games that have been released in the last couple years.

BeOneWithTheGun5066d ago

@kaveti Well, I rented Hunted Demon's Forge and it looked like ass. This looks at least better than that.

saladthieves5066d ago

I have a PC version installed (from Steam) and I can tell you this PS3 version looks absolutely fantastic!

clank5435066d ago

It's a pretty old game. Plus, Chaos Theory and Pandora Tomorrow were far superior graphically to the first one. This looks great from how I remember it.

RyuDrinksTheDew5066d ago

while the up-res is welcome, i was hoping more work would be done.

no self shadow on the ground, but is randomly on the wall.

textures are still the same.

oh well.

Ducky5066d ago

Looks a bit better than the PC version... especially the lighting.

fluffydelusions5066d ago

They said it's based off the PC version

Bathyj5066d ago

When is this out on disc?

Paragon5066d ago

September 27th and it'll be about $40.

Paragon5066d ago

Wow - really? Who is disagreeing with what the set date it's supposed to release is? Somebody is trying to fight with logic.
