Why we don't need to care about next gen consoles just yet

Ember says: Recently, because of the announcement of the Wii-U a few months ago people have been talking up the idea of the “XBOX 720″ and the “PS4″. In my opinion, what is the point of talking about next gen consoles when they probably won’t have much to offer us. Sure, the Wii-U will add another console with HD graphics to the market but that’s practically the only addition....(continued in article)

I agree that we haven't even touched the tip of the iceberg with this generation of consoles, but the shiny, new "Wow Factor" and the need tech consumers seem to have for the latest and greatest will win out every time. Capitalism FTW!

ATi_Elite3087d ago

cause it's not E3 2012 yet when the 720 gets announced.

Cause we do not have a firm release date and price for the WiiU.

Cause it's not E3 2013 when the PS4 gets revealed.

darthv723087d ago

I certainly "want" to. I'm a hardware whore so I need my next gen fix.

As for touching the iceberg....

It is usually by the end of a consoles generational run that developers finally get it all figured out. Has been that way for years. I have seen stuff done on the Genesis and PS1 and SNES etc at or near the end that has far surpassed what you first start out seeing. And it is the same hardware from beginning to end.

"we haven't even touched the tip of the iceberg with this generation of consoles"

Oh plz. 6 years have past and you think it's just getting started? I don't wanna be on whatever planet you think you're on.

dinkeldinkse3087d ago

That planet sounds very nice.

Developers are still finding clever ways to make games look better, and the Kinect and PS Move are still very new pieces of tech. We can still find better ways to compress things and add polish to games. Clever workarounds and ways to use the current gen of consoles are still out there. Don't try and deny it.

ATi_Elite3086d ago

I seriously doubt that Iceberg has some hidden power to make console games look like BF3 PC so it's time for new hardware!

"Developers are still finding clever ways to make games look better,"

Its not like that have much choice do they?

I agree but you have to admit that the lack of disk space is something that really has to be addressed and the only way to do this is to move on to the next gen.

If we dont do this some time soon then we can look forward to more amazing 10 hr games with amazing graphic but with liner and limited game play.

frozengame3087d ago

What's the use of a new console that's basically the same thing as the 360 or Ps3, but with more disc space? Microsoft and Sony do not need to be like Nintendo, popping out a new console every few years just to get some money.

Ducky3087d ago (Edited 3087d ago )

^ Nintendo is only following the schedule that MS & Sony used to follow.

5~6 years have gone by, it's time for a new console. Technology has advanced a lot in the mean time.
... and launching a new console COSTS money. It's an investment.

With games struggling to maintain 720p resolution, all the while scratching the 30fps mark... not exactly a sign of good health.

Micro_Sony3087d ago

@Froze who said that the PS4 and 720 are going to be like previous consoles?

Lack of memory is just one of the many things that need to be changed for next gen.

frozengame3087d ago

I would do the same if only I had the money. So looking forward to an HD remake of Ocarina of time! 3D OoC can go screw itself.

Micro_Sony3087d ago

I think the Wii-U will force Sony and MS to reconsider the 3 more years left this gen mentality that they have.

The Wii-U is looking like the Wii all over again - people ignoring it and then bam sold sold sold sold........................

frozengame3087d ago (Edited 3087d ago )

I think it's not looking like much but then again you may be right. The rumor about only one touch screen controller compatibility per Wii-U unit is not helping my view of the console, however HD Zelda is putting me on the fence of the situation.

wwm0nkey3087d ago

By late 2012 or 2013 would be a great time for the next generation consoles.

BeastlyRig3087d ago

I just want to know the specs..

Anon19743087d ago

My gut tells me, prepare to be disappointed. Both Sony and Microsoft took huge hits this gen to put out technically advanced systems and it's questionable whether either will even break even from those losses posted early on before each system is due to be replaced. Meanwhile the Wii, "two gamecube's duct taped together" sold like hotcakes for years and Nintendo laughed all the way to the bank.

It's not inconceivable that Sony and Microsoft didn't take notes and aren't readying cheaper consoles rather than pushing the envelope. When Shane Kim was still with Microsoft he openly commented that the next Xbox might look nothing like the traditional game console and MS might opt instead for a lower cost "digital distribution hub".

At the end of the day, they're all in it to make money, not run a charity for gamers. This generation of consoles and the lessons learned will no doubt impact the next gen, and I'm not sure if the core gamer is going to like it very much. I certainly can't wait for new, balls out, cutting edge hardware, but is that what we're going to get? Only time will tell.

Brasi823087d ago

Nice reply. I agree with everything you said. Also technology is still advancing at a fast pace however the cost of the tech isn't falling as quickly as it has over the last 30 years. [thumbsup]

tell that to AMD they said the 720 will rival avatar so yes ms will push out an advanced system so we have sony left you think sony would release a weak system not gonna happen

sn for everyones information a lot of sony's losses came from R&D costs

now im not saying the 720 will rival avatar but amd saying that tells you that ms will put some money in the 720

because we live in the present
