Is Call of Duty a Casual Game? | Bitmob

Bitmob writer Shayne Copeland Attempts to answer the question "Is Call of Duty a Casual Game." The answer proves a little more complicated than Angry Birds.

firemassacre5062d ago (Edited 5062d ago )

its as casual as a 13 year old girl going to walmart buying a i love justin beiber t shirt and after words eating mcdonalds to satisfy her fat ass.

thugbob5061d ago (Edited 5061d ago )

.
Exactly CoD is casual.

If you are looking for a FPS where there is no BS as no over powered weapons, no over powered perks/abilities, no over powered killstreaks, no over powered classes, etc. Then CoD is not the game you should be looking for.

You can't play CoD competitively without taking out all the over powered sh** in the game. -_-

Seriously you have people running and gunning with a SNIPER RIFLE o_O.

Last I checked snipers were suppose to kick back and pick people off... =O

CoD is definitely causal. :)

jeseth5061d ago

CoD is no more or less casual than any other successful FPS game.

You can pick up COD, BF, KZ, Halo, etc. and quickly jump in to a Multiplayer game and run around like a moron just for the hell/fun of it. But to be really good at any of these games, to set yourself above the average player, you have to be pretty skilled.

No matter how much these authors try to slander COD, Modern Warfare 3 is going to sell 30 million copies. And half of the people trashing it buy it annually anyways but the anonimity of the internet allows them to try to get on their soapbox and downplay it.

thugbob5061d ago

.
BF is definitely not casual. Halo 3 and Killzone 2 are definitely not causal games.

Why you ask? Because these games are the most balanced FPS out this gen...

KZ3 got ruined due to CoD's success because the developers of KZ3 took CoD elements and implemented it into their game so KZ has now become causal unless KZ4 goes back to the original roots of KILLZONE...

No matter what you say CoD is causal. It's all about perks, killstreaks, and camping. And less about one on one gun battles and flanking the enemy.

And I couldn't care less about how much MW3 sells. Just as I don't give a hoot about how much Wii Fit sells.

jeseth5061d ago

According to your accesability definition below, ANY FPS this gen are casual. You can start it up play a couple of games and boom your done. Thats casual gaming.

And all the tactics you speak of in BF (one on One gunfights/flanking) exist in every other game. Maybe your just a TDM whore and don't play objective based modes? To win in any FPS multiplayer game on a consistent basis you have to work as a team. That crap doesn't just exist in Battlefield. Are you blind? Battlfield BC2 is more of a campfest than any other FPS I've ever played! And if people aren't camping they are getting in tanks and crap like total losers. You talk about perks being bad but each class in BF or KZ is like having "perks" in COD. In KZ you can magically make a turret appear in 15 seconds . . . real hardcore. In battlefield support guys can carry what seem like Connex Boxes full of ammo and first aid? How are these any different from COD perks?

Its like you guys ignore parts of other games as long as it caters to your argument when when it all boils down to it FPS games now a days are more or less all the same. Get over yourself man , EA isn't coming to your door to pin a merit badge on your chest for carrying a BF Flag on N4G message boards.

FragGen5059d ago (Edited 5059d ago )

Anyone who thinks COD is a casual game in the same way that Angry Birds or Solitaire are casual games has lost all perspective of what casual gaming actually means and is bordering on fanboyism, IMHO.

Being consistently on top of the COD leaderboards requires a significant skill set, deep understanding of the maps, and yes, understanding all of the exploits available and being able to utilize them effectively. You may not like the game, you may think other shooters require much more meaningful skills to win, you may think its design is outdated or unbalanced but it is HARDLY a casual game. And anyone who claims such after playing it for any significant period of time is probably being disingenuous.

Pandamobile5062d ago

Yes, it's about as casual as a FPS can get without having waterguns.

NuclearDuke5061d ago

Yes it is. Call of Duty is a casual game and I enjoy it.

Cpt_kitten5061d ago

waterguns......you maybe on to something lol

JokesOnYou5061d ago (Edited 5061d ago )

Yeah, and if it is so what? I mean if we stick a casual label on it then what? Is it going to sell less? Is it going to be hated by BF fans more or less? Is it going to mean its any less fun and more likeable than BF? "Oh no, MW3 is a casual game, I can't buy it now." lol, Everyone on this site has played it many times...does that make all of us "hardcore" gamers now casual gamers? I remember much of the same BS to downplay Halo's success, didn't matter 'cause I played the hell out of Halo3/Reach and enjoyed every minute of it. Oh well I think COD is no more casual than BF, it just has a different style thats more Arcade for sure but if that makes it or me casual then so be it, I guess I'll be hardcore once again when I change the disc back to Gears3.

jeseth5061d ago

The amount of hate and venom this game gets by its haters show how successful it is and how jealous people are of it.

The way people hate COD make me think of the way fans of crappy sports teams hate on the Yankees, Red Sox, Patriots, Steelers, Lakers, Celtics, etc.

Its hilarious.

Imikida5060d ago

Why would I be jealous of a video game? Really people aren't jealous, its just we think its kinda overrated. I mean its a descent game, but its not amazing. They have unbalanced perks, overpowered guns, and a lot of glitches.

" Not being a fan of First Person Shooters "...O_o

...I think that statement says it all, that and the fact he claims he downloaded Tetris ONCE should spell it out for you.

COD will be the biggest entertainment launch of the year because it's the game to BEAT. It's the game every gamer will be talking about and if you want to be even considered a gamer, you have to play this game...the whole world will be watching...just the way it is.

Pandamobile5062d ago

The reason it's so popular is because it's become a casual game franchise. The same reason Farmville and Angry Birds are so popular. They're fun in small doses, their extremely easy, and anyone can play them.

FragGen5059d ago

Right, just like Street Fighter became a casual game in the 90's. Oh wait. Maybe you're full of sh*t. LOL.

QuodEratDemonstrandm5062d ago (Edited 5062d ago )

Yes. I own Tetris, and Angry Birds, and 2-D Adventures of Rotating Octopus Character. I have some casual games on my PS3 hard drive.
Now let's look at a few of the discs I own.
Infamous, Infamous 2, Prototype, Assassins Creed 1, 2, and Brotherhood, Just Cause 2, Heavy Rain, Grand Theft Auto and Metal Gear solid.

And, in case you didn't notice, big sales is part of the argument FOR CoD being a casual game.

Further: you don't need to play CoD to be a gamer. You just need to own at least one console, and some games for it.

Now, if you will excuse me, I have a banker to assassinate and a guild to run.

Bonobo123455061d ago

I only downloaded Tetris once....
I share the same opinion as him..

WTF is your point? I never understand your crazy messages, sometimes I think you must be trolling...

Jay5205062d ago

It's a hardcore game for casual gamers, but it's a casual game for hardcore gamers.

Pikajew5061d ago

What makes a game casual?

Bonobo123455061d ago

Mainly ease of use, the consumers and he market it holds...

JokesOnYou5061d ago

So if a dev makes a game that has great gameplay, that is accessible, fun, intuitive and alot of people end up liking it= huge sales= casual. OK got it.

thugbob5061d ago

Emphasis on accessible. A casual game lacks competitiveness because it's so easy. The gap between skill and noob is small. A hardcore game would be a balanced game that requires you to put in some hours in order for you to actually own at the game.

jeseth5061d ago

@ thugbob?

What games are you playing? Any person that is good at FPS games can jump into a BF, COD, KZ, Halo, etc. games and do well. You are acting like you can just jump into COD and own if you aren't skilled. Are you just ignorant or are your COD hate blinders so tight that they've affected your functional brain? People that are good at COD destroy the average player, just like BF, Halo, etc.

Why is everyone acting like COD is so easy to own when BF is just as easy? BF is a campfest (like COD) where people snipe all day and jump in cheap ass vehicles to mow people down. Why are people trying to raise BF so much? If Battlefield were as popular and the cultural phenomenon tha COD is would people hate in it too? I mean the differences between BFBC, BFBC2, and now BF3 are just as minimal as the changes between COD installations.

Must not be "cool" to play COD anymore.

Ape Escape.
Fun game but, wow, you need a college degree to understand the controls.
A remaster would also save you from having to constantly fight the camera.
Keep the music though. Those drum and bass tracks fit really well and haven't aged. Made me think that more games could work well with drum and bass tracks, but unfortunately it's a somewhat niche genre now.
