No melee combat in Fable: The Journey because Kinect can't do recoil

OXM UK: "Lionhead mulled over the possibility of building old-style Fable combat into Fable: The Journey, but eventually decided against it as players have "encoded" ideas about how swords and pistols should handle, studio boss Peter Molyneux has revealed."

Gazondaily4635d ago

Sounds like an excuse to me.

So no melee just magic? That's just disappointing and is a strong indication of lazy programming. Afterall, isn't there a game doing melee combat (forgot the name) and.is supposed to be quite hardcore too?

Molyneux chats so much s**t. He was the figure head behind Kinect at its unveil last year and can't even code for something as simple as recoil. Waste of space.

TacoTaru4635d ago

Septic says: "can't even code for something as simple as recoil. Waste of space."

The "recoil" from a gun or the feedback when you hit something with a sword would have to be transferred magically through the air to your arm or hand since you don't need to be holding something while using kinect. I'm pretty sure accomplishing this with code would be more than a noble prize winning effort at the least.

Gazondaily4635d ago

Yet another game has already managed to achieve this noble prize winning effort. If you were perceptive enough, you would realise that recoil is only being used as an excuse here to completely omit melee combat (something that has been an integral part of the Fable games from the outset).

Are you beginning to understand the point I made?

Parapraxis4635d ago (Edited 4635d ago )

Sadly Moleneux is using the excuse that there is no way to have a real world physical feedback with kinect and therefore users would not feel "powerful" when using anything other than a magic cast.

No crap... there is no physical feedback with kinect...surprise surprise.

This is one of the poorest excuses I've ever heard a dev give as to why they are going to have a limited number of combat options in a game.

How long has Molyneux had a kinect dev kit, and how can he have the balls to make such asinine statements?
Sad sad sad.

mendicant4635d ago

Septic,

What game is that? I hope you're not talking about Child of Eden using the controller for rumble. I love that game on Kinect but that featrue sucked, was awkward and was a major fail.

I like what I saw on the video during E3. You have to actually "make" the magic. That seems more interesting to me. It's really funny how people complain about not having any new ideas in gaming but when someone does come up with something, the roaches come out because they feed off of hate.

TacoTaru4635d ago

Sorry Septic. I guess I took the "can't even code for something as simple as recoil" to mean what it said. My mistake.

TheDivine4635d ago

Still id be interested if it had sword and pistol combat. As of now its a DEFINITE pass. Id rather have Fable 4 and let them add some kinect features for gestures and some other stuff. Im one of the biggest fable fans but this is lame. I guess it doesnt matter as long as it doesnt slow down fable 4 coming out, might not be for me but others might enjoy it.

Hockeydud194635d ago

Septic - I believe the game your talking about is Ryse from Crytek. That's about the only game that even interests me on the Kinect. Hence I don't own kinect.

Gazondaily4635d ago

That's the one mate cheers. Ryse. The only decent looking Kinect game, and all it showed was the melee aspect.

SilentNegotiator4635d ago

The last time I checked, non-motion games have recoil. While I understand the disconnect between the player and the game with hands-free control, it's there in regular games, too. And recoil doesn't have to perfectly match the PLAYERS' ideas of recoil.

Straight up self-excusing BS.

Why o why4635d ago

Im not sure people were expecting complex combat after seeing the footage.

Emilio_Estevez4635d ago

Yeah, on rails will do that. Color me dissapointed about this game, again.

ksense4635d ago (Edited 4635d ago )

no melee no guns no sale

Molyneux reckons The Journey will "compel" you to buy Kinect, thanks to a robust degree of challenge and immersion.....

sikbeta4635d ago (Edited 4635d ago )

IF you have a kienct, you better buy it and "show" that core games are important as well, don't let all the crappy shovelware flood the gaming library, that what happened to the wii...

zeal0us4635d ago

why does it seems like the fable series been going down hill?

Average_Joe4635d ago

Can people actually wait for something on this game before speculating about it? This place is so negative sometimes I cant even stand it.

Parapraxis4635d ago (Edited 4635d ago )

Peter Molyneux is the source. I would consider that "something on this game".

You're coming off as quite "tender" about the not surprising, and frankly, deserving criticism that this title is receiving.

BTW, this isn't "speculation", it is reaction to the words coming straight from the horse's mouth.

Average_Joe4635d ago

We've actually seen no real gameplay though, why speculate? He does build up his games, but that's common. He is a dreamer and his games are fun to play. He get's an unusual amount of hate here in particular.

If you don't like it, then don't buy it. Not sure why more people don't take that advice, sitting there and complaining about something you have no intention of buying is just a waste of everyone's time.

Top 10 Worst Kinect Games

Alex S. from Link-Cable writes: "A few days ago, Microsoft announced that they were officially discontinuing their Kinect motion-sensing accessory. What was once considered a chief-rival to Nintendo’s Wii revolution and an integral part of the Xbox One’s launch has come to an end, and we here at Link-Cable… couldn’t be happier. The Kinect, while sporting impressive technology never managed to live up to its full potential and most of the games released for the device either had shoe-horned in support or barely functioned as intentioned, in part because of the device’s very specific ideal conditions. So as the Kinect sails off into sunset, we’ve decided to remember the worst of times and look back at the Top 10 Worst Kinect games."

Kinect, for me, is easily worth owning for two things: Dance Central for me acting like an idiot and having fun, and Kinect Party for my kids when they want to have easy-access stupid fun at like a kid's party. Those were the only games I have enjoyed on it, and they couldn't be done any other way (well, I guess that KP is EyeToy-level work). But my hope is that when motion control falls away, we'll get a proper DDR again.

andrewsquall2348d ago (Edited 2348d ago )

Yet for 150 quid it is and was most certainly not worth owning for solely those 2 games, that you have to pay money for also.

Now far be it from me to tell you what is worth it or not worth it to you. But if that is what is worth it to you, I don't want to know what ISN'T worth it lol.

RyanDJ2347d ago

It was worth it to buy one used for half price and get one of those two games for free. ;)

datriax2348d ago

All of them are tied for 1st place.

darthv722348d ago

Star wars wouldnt be so bad if it didnt have.... the dancing. Ughhh that dancing.

They should do a list of 10 best kinect games as well. I'm sure fruit ninja and gun stringer would be on there. Those are actually fun to play.

Would you say absolutely horrible hyperbole? :D

4Sh0w2514d ago (Edited 2514d ago )

Halo 5?....pffft to each his own but Halo 5 is a great game, every Xbox owner I know enjoyed it, the campaign was nice I like the teamwork concept and the multiplayer keeps 'em coming back with great gameplay & modes so much content, 343 did a helluva job.

Christopher2514d ago

@4Show: Uh... going to assume that's a comment intended for someone else.

spicelicka2514d ago

Not Halo 5. It had a bad story COMPARED to past games but it didn't have a bad story overall. The gameplay was top notch, and multiplayer is still one of the best on the market right now. Custom games browser is the single greatest thing 343 did which I'm grateful for.

ninsigma2514d ago

Nah it really was a bad campaign. MP was great but seriously, that was a hugely terrible story mode.

spicelicka2513d ago

The story maybe, but some of the missions were extremely fun. The Sangehlios ones are right up there with the best missions in the franchise.

Kingthrash3602514d ago

Halos mp was great but became boring quicker than most.
The story. Naw that was bad and it's marketing was a lie. Made it seem like old master chief was gunna fight that new fake master chief but the conflict ended up being a one punch cgi sequence.
Not to mention fighting the same boss over and over and over....plus add the no split screen mp and whala! You got the worst canon halo ever made

brich2332514d ago

Compared to Halo 4, Halo 5's story was trash and not memorable at all.

ninsigma2513d ago

That's not really saying much though cuz that was pretty bad as well.

ninsigma2513d ago

Agreed on sanghelios. That was one of the very few times it actually felt like halo.

Aenea2514d ago

And another article with 15 items from this website *shakes head*

MadLad2514d ago

Halo 5, FarCry 2, Dragon Age 2, Nuts and Bolts, and Gears of War: Judgement were all far from bad games. Hell, even Crackdown 2 was pretty fun.

There's a difference between a lesser sequel, and a bad game.

rlow12513d ago

With a Title that says "horrible sequels", most of these are far from that. Better title should be disappointing sequels. But I'm sure they went with the former to get clicks and bring in the fanboys.

i miss a Black and White game so much

Bahamut2962d ago (Edited 2962d ago )

Good times. Back when Lionhead Studios actually meant something. Black and White was awesome, Fable was great, Fable 2 was real good, then it all went downhill from there.

They had such big aspirations and goals, it's a shame that it came to this. I knew it wouldn't last when Peter Molyneux left. Say what you want about the man, but he had vision. True he never followed up on 75% of what he said, but nevertheless the heart of Lionhead Studios came from him.

Imalwaysright2962d ago

Who wouldn't miss being a god?

If someone asks you if you're a god, you say yes.
