Jaffe: Twisted Metal delay not tied to Uncharted 3, Modern Warfare 3 or others

XMNR: David Jaffe and Eat Sleep Play revealed last week that Twisted Metal had been delayed to early 2012 so that they could take some more time under the hood of the PS3 exclusive to polish it up. Jaffe later when on to expand on the specific items they are looking to fix in the game but some have apparently said the delay was due to the line-up of blockbuster games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Uncharted 3 and Battlefield 3 releasing around the same time. This sent Jaffe off on a bit of a rant to further explain the delay.

True fans will buy this game regardless of whether or not it is released alongside the aforementioned games (unless they can't afford to buy >1 game).

Oh how I have waited for thee TM. This is going to be amazing!

JokesOnYou4643d ago (Edited 4643d ago )

Yeah right, I have nothing against the game but TM has no hype, Im sure diehard fans disagree. The point is the genre just isnt as fresh like in the ps2 days, its become very niche type of game. I doubt whenever it releases that it will have huge sales, Im not knocking the game itself, if you love it buy it, but it doesnt take a rocket scientist to see it just cant compete with the onslaught of blockbuster games starting in Sept. Jaffe is no fool and he's about as believable as a politician discussing taxes in a election campaign trying to deny this delay has NOTHING to do with other releases. btw, I dont think a delay vs moving your release date for better marketing/sales makes you look any better or worse as a dev.

Gazondaily4643d ago

You said it yourself, its a very niche type of game. Hence why true fans will buy this regardless of what is being released around it.

JokesOnYou4643d ago (Edited 4643d ago )

Niche fans of TM will buy it but that generally is a small audience, every dev whether conceding his game is niche or not wants/hopes to broaden its fanbase, that certainly isnt going to happen if you release a lower tier marketed game during a holiday storm of big budget games. Every gamer has at least a few niche or nostalgia games they will buy, however we ALL have our next big blockbusters, of course we want it all but budget constraints dictate choices which means some games dont make the list.....the old "I'll pick up later list" is full of deserving games that fell victim to heavy CURRENT competition, only never to be bought due to future blockbusters. Listen every game loses sales to the competition, but the reality is niche games will take an even worst beating against these giants, well unless you dont believe devs of niche games are just in it for "the love of gaming" and dont care about maximizing their profits, lol.

"Twisted Metal delay not tied to Uncharted 3, Modern Warfare 3 or others"

Of course there going to say that. Whatever the reason is, I'm sure Jaffe being a prudent business man is relieved that TD isn't coming out in this jam packed fall season.

redDevil874643d ago

I'm sure Jaffe being a prudent business man is relieved that TD isn't coming out in this jam packed fall season

Not to mention some people's wallets. Too many games and not enough cash :/

iHEARTboobs4643d ago

"Too many games and not enough cash"

Nor enough time to play them all!

LOGICWINS4643d ago

"Not to mention some people's wallets. Too many games and not enough cash :/"

Yeah, I don't have the time or the cash to play all these games. The only game I'm getting this fall is UC3. Everything else will have to wait.

AutoCad4643d ago

Ya right...
Just release the game. The Twisted Metal fans will buy it over COD OR Uncharted.

TheLastGuardian4643d ago (Edited 4643d ago )

If Twisted Metal came out this year and I could only buy 1 game, you better believe I'd buy Twisted Metal. F*ck all those other games.

Twisted Metal looks like a better game than BF3, MW3, UC3, Gears 3, Skyrim, you name lt. Twisted Metal looks like the greatest game ever made. I don't understand why anyone would skip Twisted Metal, no matter what time of year it's released.

Twisted Metal is such a must buy, Twisted Metal deserves way more hype than it's getting. If only more people understood how great Twisted Metal was, TM would be thier most anticipated game like it is mine. Damnit Sony, you need to start hyping your best exclusive more, give Twisted Metal the sales it deserves.

All I ask for is a new Twisted Metal that allows flat screen & PSVR2 cross play that also supports a wheel.
Would be heaven.

Babadook7277d ago

Wow. I like the idea of VR twisted metal with a wheel.

Rebel_Scum277d ago

They need to get the enemy AI balance right. Thats what made 2 the best in the series. Black was abysmal in that dept.

neomahi277d ago

You don't. Do sequels. If you've gotta reboot, might as well do a new IP. God of War is the only game I can say that did a successful reboot

TiredGamer277d ago (Edited 277d ago )

Isn’t the new GoW just a sequel technically?

I personally think they can leverage the roots of the series. The original TM in 1995 took place on Christmas Eve 2005, and it was the 10th contest in history. Why not “reboot” the franchise by making a prequel of sorts showing the origin story of the series and maybe linking all the future games in a brilliant way. Seems like such an obvious idea to leverage old with the new (kind of look how Doom 2016 did with its lore).

Knightofelemia276d ago

Just make it a good game Twisted Metal has it's fan base.

I hope this is camp as all hell.

bouzebbal839d ago

They should have made Destruction All star with a Twisted Metal skin as launch title.. With some more content of course.

NecrumOddBoy838d ago (Edited 838d ago )

Rumor mill is that the team used All Stars as a test bed game to make a PS5 Twisted Metal in the future. No idea why they made this though. Total miss and it could hurt them in the end. Twisted Metal is really awesome. I honestly hope they take this series the Forza Horizon route. Maybe a big open world like a destroyed city in an apocalyptic setting. Still can have arenas and races, battles etc, but also add RPG elements and quests, challenges etc.

Dirtnapstor838d ago

Agreed. I am mildly surprised they did not do a Twisted Metal iteration vs DAS. Could have easily reskinned everything, no?

sourOG839d ago

Agreed. I’m playing serious Sam now and I think it’s awful in a great way. I’m enjoying it.

Majin-vegeta840d ago

Looks like the new game is pretty much confirmed now.

Bobertt839d ago

Idk David Jaffe had said he has seen stuff about the TV show but Sony has never told him anything about a new game. I find it hard to believe they would not tell the creator of the franchise they were going to make a new game.

Army_of_Darkness838d ago

Sony owns the franchise and Jaffe is no longer associated with them anymore, so Sony doesn't have to inform him on anything really...

NapalmSanctuary837d ago

...says f2p with Lucid developing. Might wanna keep them expectations low.

isarai840d ago

I hope it follows the gameplay style of hardware rivals, seriously that game was awesome to play

Godmars290839d ago

How about having to race through a destructible city with tons of people to mow down.

burnout with rocket launchers and ability to drive on skyscraper roofs or through office floors.

DarXyde838d ago

That sounds like Carmageddon meets Warhawk.

I'm iffy on reviving Twisted Metal personally. I replayed it on PS3 via PSOne classics because I loved the originals and I must say, these titles haven't aged well. We're now two generations removed from then, which was already 1-2 generations removed from the originals.

There needs to be some serious modernization efforts for these games to do well.

Godmars290838d ago

@DarXyde:
And what would be wrong with a "Carmageddon meets Warhawk" game? Pretty much what you'd want of a PS5 version of a PS1 title.

NapalmSanctuary837d ago

@Godmars Thats not Twisted Metal. Its one thing to do something like that with an alt game mode but Twisted Metal already has an identity. The gameplay needs to stay true to it.

--Onilink--839d ago

The only thing confirmed by Sony so far was a TV series, not a game

Neonridr839d ago

that's great, looking forward to some next gen destruction!

TheDoomedGuy839d ago

Imagine how it'll feel with the dual sense.

--Onilink--839d ago

I get the feeling that most people arent really reading the article. The only thing confirmed by Sony is the TV series.

Anything about a new game is just rumors and speculation at this point
