Spider-man 3 Sells 130K in Six Days on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that the Blu-ray release of 'Spider-man 3' sold 130,000 copies the first six days at retail, 15,000 more copies than the Transformers HD DVD was reported to have sold its first week on store shelves. Having shipped 400,000 copies to retailers, this represents a 30% sell-off for the title.

David Bishop, President of Sony commented, "We are well-placed for the holidays. We got in before the key shopping season, and now you'll have more people getting into the market, as new players are launching from Sony, Sharp, Panasonic [among others]. It's our hope that they walk out with a player and Spider-Man 3."

The 130,000 sold does not include copies given away as part of a Sony promotion to provide the title to those who purchase a 40GB PS3. Sony expects demand to increase throughout the holiday season, with 'Spider-man 3' to remain a top seller.

Considering there are over 6 million BD players and probably 3million in N. America 130,000 is not great.. Comparing the two Blu Ray player including the PS3 outnumber hd dvd player 6:1.. With that in mind Spider Man 3 was only able to sell 15,000 more than transformers when HD DVD has so much less players out.. Again this proves what the backers of HD DVD has been saying all along.. People would rather buy a stand alone player than having a gaming machine like the PS3 as their main DVD players.. So probably more than half of the PS3 owners out there don't use it for Blu Ray ...

Now if Parmount waited to release Transformers after the $99 A2 sales i'm pretty sure there would no way Spider Man would've sold more.. But hey we have Shrek 3 coming out pretty soon on HD DVD only.. Let's see how many of those sell with 100,000+ more HD DVD owners including myself since Transformers came out!

so 250 odd isnt bad . As shmee said and we know HD DVD int a factor in those regions. so 115 k is the total sales for HD DVD transformers on its launch week. compared to 250k on its launch week.

so a sales comparison is not valid.

I agree with u SHMEEE BHAI ratatouille might be a much bigger hit than Spiderman 3 and so could be cars . we wait for the numbers though

Any of you guys have links that claim that Spiderman sold 100k in japan and europe.. There's no way you guys can spin this.. The fact that Blu Ray only outsells HD DVD in software 2:1 when Blu Ray players outnumber HD DVD players 6:1 is bad for Blu Ray! If All PS3 owners bought blu ray movies then this war would've ended already. Believe me if the Sony can match HD DVD price and if Blu Ray software was outselling HD DVD by at least 5:1 then this war would have been over already! But its a good thing that Blu Ray hasn't won yet because there would've been no way I would be able to buy a $99 HD DVD player and watch transformers in HD without having to spend $400 on a Blu Ray player! I believe that HD DVD will end up being the winner in this because of price alone! Just like the VHS vs Beta war one of the main factors for VHS winning (other than porn supporting it)was that VHS was cheaper than Beta even though beta was higher quality!

Sony said so... only NPD numbers can actually tell how many copies were actually sold.

Paramount said it sold 190,000 of Transformers, but NPD puts that number lower at 115,000. Let's split it down the middle.

So, Sony says it sold 130,000 ... let's wait till we have some NPD numbers. Right now you aren't comparing apples to apples.

But Paramount lied D:? In any case I didn't like either movie that much and I'm a hardcore fan of both franchises. Transformers looked like a damn GMC commercial half the time, and the other half with needless human interaction getting in the way of my Autobot/Decepticon war. Don't even get me started on Spiderman 3 and Sam Raimi. That said I'll probably be picking both of these up as soon as Transformers hits BR. Yes I know that contradicts what I just said but sometimes I get movies for the technical achievement alone.

Hah I care about the story when they're tampering with my childhood!! I can just stare at the spouse for free. I go see Transformers for the dope robot battles, not some phoned in generic love story. All of that is trivial though, biggest gripe was Optimus looking like a giant robot monkey when he didn't have his mask. Oh yeah I'm naming my first daughter Soundwave so she can name her kids after the tapes, just gotta prove to the missus how awesome it'd be.

Especially in 1080p. I was only disappointed with the lack of extras on the first two movies. They could've at least added commentaries. I'm sure next year they will release individual movies of the the first two and probably add a sh!t load of extras.

I hope Sony will pull an exchange program like they did with the Fifth Element and give us a complete version but that will unlikely happen.

According to one of the mods over at bluray.com this is only for the spider man 3 standalone disc and the number will be around 200,000 if you include the trilogy sales.

The trilogy and Spiderman 3 are two different products (even though the third movie is included in the trilogy) so therefore they must count it separately. That's just my opinion.

i also agree. i read that 130 thousand is for the single disk but lets say i will wait for more hard confirmation. they aren't mixing the trilogy pack due to it being a different sku since it includes other movies.

I think its nice to see even though blue ray is expesive that it can still produce the numbers at this rate... If they went down to 299 or 199 Us dollars you would see HD DVD hit the tank i believe anyway. How i think of HDDVD is like a celeron processor. While Blueray is a pentium. People that cannot afford much money will buy HDDVD myself i got a ps3 and i got blueray with it although i wasnt really buying ps3 for that i was getting it to upgrade from the PS2. But now i got rid of the normal dvd player and the vcr. Also i will be getting them all on blueray and i will be starting on the DVD switch over to blueray now..... BTW i havent tried this does Regular DVD work on blueray lol sad to say but i never put one in and i am at work and too lazy atm to go home and try.

Normal DVD disk do work in the Blueray player or PS3 drive.
it even upscales it abit to improve the picture if your using an HD TV.

these big blockbusters no matter their quality will sell a lot. i personally think blade runner is one of the best movies ever but its has a crappier chance than hell freezing over of selling this much in a week on bd.

on spidey, i think the first two were excellent and the last one was just good mostly for the special effects. but again its just opinions. some people just like popcorn flicks. thats all. its the reason why rescue dawn will bomb at the box office and crap summer blockbusters will keep making money.

haha, that is total bull. Transformers sold more than Spiderman the first week with 190,000 HD-DVD's. If what sony says is true about selling 130,000 Blu-Ray Spiderman 3 discs than Transformers would still have sold more. Unless they are talking about week 1 for spiderman and week 2(i think it is) for Transformers than it might be possible. If they are counting for the first week sales then they are totally wrong, by the way Blu-Ray.com didn't actually compare the sale numbers, they just said that sold 15,000 more without showing actual data for both movies.
