Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter IV: 2011 Title goes to which game?

Product-Reviews writes: Putting Marvel Vs Capcom 3 aside, we want to know which game gets your vote as the best of 2011 with regards to MK and SFIV as we believe they are ahead of MvC3 in terms of popularity and replayability. Many of you will feel that comparisons between the two are pointless as Street Fighter IV is the dominant fighter hands down, but those who have played the Mortal Kombat reboot won’t agree, as we can also concede that the new Mortal Kombat game is a classic trip down memory lane that we’re loving so far.

For casual gaming, I'd go with mortal kombat as it's a lot more exciting than street fighter iv. For hardcore fighting though, I'd say sfiv comes out on top...just my opinion.

Two amazing games, played loads of Street Fighter in the arcades as a kid, but once I bought it on the PS3 the game has collected dust, while Mortal Kombat gets played everyday. Not sure what it is about Mortal Kombat, but I love it.

Sorry but SSF4 is tighter and just a well crafted and more experienced type of fighting game than MK.

I do give the new MK props tho, i feel their next installment will be even better.

Is it weird that I prefer Mortal Kombat not because of it's gameplay, but because of it's story? THAT is what a fighting game's storyline should be like. I don't want to just fight, fight, fight. I want a little character development! :O

That's not to say Mortal Kombat doesn't have amazing gameplay - it does. But it's the story I was most invested in. I genuinely want to know what will happen to the characters in the next MK.

Good point.. The story mode in mk is fantastic, it's a shame the dlc characters could not be included though.. Guess it would take too long

N4g is the only place I've personally seen such dramatic approval for Mortal Kombat over Street Fighter. I don't know what it is. Could people give their own personal reasons rather than just say MK?

Street Fighter has always been a game of chess for me with the meta game being much deeper than MK. If it's not frame traps, it's block strings, or plinking, or buffering moves. I've always liked the flash of Mortal Kombat, but I feel like minus the blood and gore, the game can be shallow as a fighter. The preset combos don't help either. I don't feel the core gameplay has the longevity of Street Fighter.

its the COD syndrome... MK isnt as pop.

But MK is a great game but it does lack real depth to people like myself that spends 100's hrs on playing fighters.

both good games but the MK crowd are the blood and gore= bestest crowd sometimes. I know in my clan it is at least.

MK has a good storyline, great thing: challenge tower with more than 300 challenges, lots of characters, fatalities and more! :)

..and Scorpion, Sub-zero and Kabal! The whole mythology is better than SF ..characters are more appealing..

..in Street fighter I like only Ryu and Chun Li

I pick SF all day i would rather play the time attack and survival mode all day over the challenge tower that was filled with a bunch of gimmicky stuff. The crypt was cool but aside from the occasional cool stuff most of that stuff was nonsense anyways.

I think it's only fair if you compare the original SF4 against the new MK, as SF has already had 3 iteration this gen which has allowed them to add content and further refine the gameplay as needed, whereas MK is still on it's first (and possibly only) version.

SF all the way . Ultimately , while mk got way better mode to occupy single player times , the gameplay is just superior in a SF title and ripe with more potential .

Seeing the way this topic turned early one , people will probably disagree .. but i feel that you could sell street with a bunch of generic bald character , it would be interesting with the premise of its gameplay ... while there is no way imo to enjoy MK on its own without the gore gimmick .

Both are well done , and their concurrence could lead to an even healthier future for the genre , but again SF (and most other 2d fighter games franchises ) against mk all the way .

I understand the SF love but every kid from the 90's remembers Mortal Kombat.

Plus...In regards to the live action movies...You can at least tolerate watching Mortal Kombat...The Street Fighter films (both of them) are horrific.
