At The Halfway Point: 2011’s Best of the Best So Far

Matt Randisi writes, "As July rolls in, it marks the mid-point of the year and there have been a plethora of games worthy of recognition to look back on. It is arguable that we have already seen some front-runners for Game of the Year, though the majority of the year’s heavy hitters are set to release post-summer. Either way, let us stop and take a look at how 2011 has held up so far category by category, culminating in the best overall game of the year so far. Of course this is an unofficial list purely for fun, and while many of the reasons I provide will be mostly objective it’s also an excuse to express my personal opinions on titles I believe are leading the charge for 2011 to be a hell of a year for gaming."

I didn't see anything that restricted this list to console only. With that said, the Witcher 2 is the Best RPG thus far.

If this was a console only list, then, I would put Two Worlds II in front of DAII (.. and I have never played Two Worlds II **I know that its flawed **. I'm trying my best to purge DAII from my memory and start fresh with DAIII).

Other than that, this list is pretty agreeable.

Witcher 2 is my GOTY so far. This may change when Skyrim comes out.

Witcher 2, Portal 2, Infamous 2 and Dirt 3 so far for me.

Simon's Quest is better than Symphony.

If you're gonna troll, at least make a legitimate attempt.

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

That's a pretty fucking great list

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

There's too many games to choose from

No Metal geat solid 1,2,3,4?
No Resident evil?
No Silent hill?
No Midnight club 3?
No NfS Underground 2?
No Final Fantasy?
No Burnout 3?
No Dragon quest 8?
No Days gone?
No Ace combat?
No Tekken/Soul calibur?......
just from the top of my head

PS1 era was full of great RPGs, PS2 was racing generation i would pick top 200 and even that would be just a fraction.

FinalFantasyFanatic171d ago

30 is way too low over the entire history of Playstation, I just wouldn't be able to narrow it down that much, I would pick 100 at least.

Storm23171d ago

Yeah...really odd list. I get that it is personal preference and I love most of the games listed, but my list would definitely be different. I agree though, it would be incredibly difficult to come up with just 30.

lockedongamer1171d ago (Edited 171d ago )

I only picked first-party titles. Otherwise, I agree!

EDIT: Except for Days Gone, I don't get the love for it but you do you!

Chocoburger162d ago

I didn't like Days Gone either, it doesn't deserve to be on any best of list.

Hopefully McNamara is as far away from this as possible he set up shop in Australia then did nothing but complain about Australian labour laws while trying to make his workers live at the office working 24/7 on la noire punishing them for leaving at 3 am and being 10 minutes late to work at 9am the next day.

It's astonishing that none of the workers went to the fair work ombudsman as the studio would have been fined astronomical numbers

porkChop312d ago

Brendan McNamara is a brilliant writer and director but he should never, ever be in charge of a studio. What he did to those devs was far beyond "crunch", and it went on for, what, 7 years? That's insane.

But I'm glad to see some of that team have come together again to create something new. A psychological thriller sounds right up my alley.

anast312d ago

I would have liked to see a new noir game.

I been enjoying LA noire my first time playing it the vibe is🔥
