With a lack of additional content and the complete omission of any multiplayer features whatsoever, Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror fails to deliver on the same scale as its PSP counterpart. If you haven't played the PSP version, give it a try; otherwise, save your cash.
Pros
* + Updated control scheme improves on original
* + Customizable mission mode adds replay value
* + Decent loading times
Cons
* - No multiplayer mode
* - Poor graphical conversion
* - Sound is sometimes not in sync
Syphon Filter could be one of the games that could make its way to the PlayStation Plus Premium subscription as they were recently rated in Korea.
Just make a new one already. I know they aren't interested. But damn. Syphon Filter was a great franchise.
Unfortunately this is like the Capcom test. Nobody is willing to risk making a game that won’t sell, so they test consumer interest with these re-releases. I’m still salty Onimusha and Darkstalkers didn’t do well enough to get new entries, hell I’m just salty we didn’t get the other Onimusha games…
This is what I get annoyed by is studios that worry about a game selling.
I don't get annoyed by that fear but the fact that these studios could easily ensure the game will have enough demand by crowdfunding it with pre-sales to justify development.
So for example Rare has apparently been worried about making a new Banjo game due to the demand for the genre.
I can almost guarantee that if Rare started a campaign where they needed to get $5 million or even $10 million in sales to complete a campaign they would absolutely smash that goal.
A $60 game x 100,000 copies which I think is a low bar for what a new Banjo could do would be $6 million.
The 100,000 pre sales wouldn't even factor in people who buy it through normal release.
If the campaign fails at least the dev's can then say "Hey we tried and nobody lived up to their end"
True. But Capcom took too long to make me a new Onimusha game.
But I'm glad Sucker Punch filled in the gap and created Ghost of Tsushima. It's Capcom's loss. I know Capcom is making some good money now. But they could be making more. As Duck said, relying on gamers to buy old games for interest is ridiculous. Just make a new one that's good. That will generate interest.
That's the worst. I bloody loved Onimusha, especially the 2-disc games (Onimusha 2 and Dawn of Dreams). Genuinely outstanding games.
Relying on the old games to be bought when most of us have the games already isn't a good idea. Unless they are trying to get new fans.
But the old fans lose out if they can't get new fans to buy them. And I'm not buying them twice because it can be played on a new system. I'll just pull out the old PS1 and PSP to play them.
Here the talk about remake is only about bloodborne the community is too young to even know what syphon filter
It's actually strange that no one at Sony wants to create another Syphon Filter game despite the notoriety of the IP.
Heck, I could even see Naughty dog applying the Uncharted/TLOU formula to the spy genre by making the settings more future techno, changing the dogs to robots, etc. I'm sure they could create a winner.
Let's hope that the release of the series coincides with the announcement of a new game.
Only ever played the first two, which were great. I hope they do remakes and it’s not just the old games we will get.
I hope they bring back this franchise. I would love a new Syphon Filter. I had endless fun with the taser.
I'd rather have an HD collection. Sony going to fuck up that backwards compatibility otherwise.
Hell yes. Socom is what the games been missing. If Sony wants to do a multiplayer only game, it's the perfect time to bring Socom back.
Well, I don't know if it's the perfect time actually with MTS and the NFT trash.
I would take a Socom 2 remake even
Sounds more like a remake or remaster to me than ps plus release. Ps plus backwards compatible release shouldn't require it to be age rated again.... it's just allowing access to what has already been rated....
I played the one that starts from parachuting out a plane (think it was the second one?). Completed it but man it was hard. I really loved it and even played the local multiplayer loads with friends. It was really good back then but I can't see it aging well
Give us a remake/remaster already. And then use that to test the market and see if the numbers are good enough to do a reboot (hint: they will be).
I enjoyed the first game considerably. Back in the day, it felt like a spinoff of Metal Gear Solid except with the balance shifted to better gameplay versus story. It's basically a combination of MGS and the original Tomb Raider in so many ways.
Part 2 and 3 were less enjoyable to me and don't hold up as well today. Lost interest after slogging through part 3 and haven't played a new SF game since. Perhaps a remake would spark that interest once again.
The massive amount of hours I had on multiplayer on my PSP would be cringe to see. I loved those games!
Reboot Syphon Filter with a remake of the first game. One of my favorite games that was overshadowed by mgs 1 at the time. Will never forget the bunker level storming the place with a shotgun. The G18 was also one of my favorite weapons along with the grenade launcher. Memories...
Jerry from BagoGames says, "Sony hasn't had the best of luck with their handheld devices and some of their biggest franchises died on the PSP, here are those five."
Interesting little thought piece. I feel like Parasite Eve and Syphon Filter could still have legs.
That Ghost n Goblins game for the PSP was the ultimate lesson in pain.
Capcom should make a collection and bring that game back.
Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins was hard as hell, did beat it though... yet I did not, because when finishing the game, it encourage you to play through a second time in order to face off against the real final boss. Never did that... too much pain...
You're a braver soldier than me. There was a part that I just couldnt get past and I gave up im defeat.
They may, we are getting a Disney Afternoon Collection of all their old Disney games, maybe Arthur is next!
It's weird that sony, with that huge success of their consoles and their highly anticipated games, just isn't able to manage to achieve this for a handheld device. Nintendo on the other hand has huge success with their handhelds, while their consoles are mostly awesome imo, but just don't take off sales wise. And ms with all its money and competence in software also is weak in delivering a console and software which cater to a broader audience. I guess every company of the big 3 has to have its weak spots.
As did I, but it was Zipper Interactive that made Unit 13, which could be considered a spiritual successor to the SOCOM serie. SIE Bend Studio made the Syphon Filter games, who also made Resistance: Retribution for the PSP, an absolute favorite game of mine.
Sure it's a little dusty, but there are some pretty amazing games out there for the PSP when you actually have a look. Here's to finding games to celebrate!
best handheld by miles ...Vita was even better as hardware but not even close to its software
Yeah, surprised by this. PSP was awesome, I loved it, much better than Vita for software.
So many great exclusives on the PSP, and better versions of multi-platform games than DS.
I agree completely. PSP was probably the best handheld ever made. While i hardly ever play mine anymore, I continue to play the games using PPSSPP because you can make the games look MUCH better than on that tiny low-res screen.
Bette than the Vita... then you never had the PS Vita... Me on the other hand had the PSP and now the Vita... you are wrong.
Who hates the PSP?? Or is this article just 8 years old?
And Yes, I read the article.
It's over 87 million haters!!!!!
Now that's a lot of PSP haters including me. I hate my PSP 1000 and PSP3000
Wow, he/she must be getting confused with the PS Vita. What a noob.. I have NEVER heard of someone hating on the PSP, it is a very successful Handheld.
I like this quote, first sentence. XD
"Sony’s PSP has been given a bad rap, almost as bad as Nintendo’s Virtual Boy." What determines a bad rap, not sales apparently because PSP beat out GBA and maybe even the 3DS.
Man you are wrong! I had the PSP since 2008 and the hate from Nintendo fanboys (on all gaming sites) was even worse, than towards the Vita now.
And I know, because I´ve been debating with the trolls since then.
We're not talking about hate from the other side, but from people who owned or considered owning. Every console gets hate..
Yeah, I don't ever recall much hate for it beyond some fan boy tripe through the years. It was a generally well received console, and most people that owned it were quite happy with the support it received.
Maybe this article confused the Vita with the PSP.
Lots of people hated on the expensive memory stick pro duo cards that only the PSP and certain Sony cameras utilized. Might have been a couple Samsung devices that supported those cards, too, I'm not sure. Lots of people also hated the UMDs. The caddies that contained the disk sometimes would come apart. The disks were much bigger than a flash memory card and so not super easy to carry around a bunch of them with you. Also, optical drives in general in a portable are not viewed as a great idea because they're bulky and suck up a lot of battery power compared to a solid state device. Strangely, the PSP Go was released to see how a UMD-less PSP would be received and it tanked. Flash memory was still kind of expensive when the PSP launched. By the end of it's run, SD cards were getting cheap and used in more places. MS Pro Duo was all but dead in all devices except the PSP. There was some adapters available to let you run Micro SD in a MS Pro Duo adapter stick and those worked pretty well. I might still have one here somewhere, actually.
Edit: At launch, I bought a 1 GB memory stick and it cost me something like $80.
My classmate hated the UMDs. Its loading time made her hacked the handheld and went full digital(piracy) which was faster.
Sold mine back in 2007 because I needed the money for a book(college) bought a brand new PSP-3000 a few years ago with 3-yr warranty for $99. I prefer new because I don't have to deal with a mis-used battery and wear-and-tear. So worth it, I still play some PS1 and exclusive games on the thing, I will not wear down my Vita when the PSP is perfectly capable and I think the buttons are more comfortable.
Chill out you plebeians, its a special PSP limited edition at that too! You are buying for the: condition, history, limited edition factor, the fact that you cant get or modify a psp like this too. I should have been more specific but I literally dont use it anymore since Im so busy
Its probably worth more than $150....been lazy but I guess I'll go the ebay route..
For a console that sold around 70 million consoles I don't think it was that hated. Loved the PSP and am thinking of buying one again.
At the very least you can mod it so that it can be one of the best portable Retro Rom players on the market. Nintendo, snes, Sega Genesis, turbo grafx 16, gameboy, advice , color. Etc.
Yea I didn't think it was a bad handheld at all, who are all these people hating it?
I have never heard anybody ever say they hate the psp. Them monster hunter local mp memories...
PSP was very impressive at times. Battlefront Rogue Squadron and Valkyria Chronicles 2 <3
I only used a psp for Crisis Core and KH BBS, I didn't hate the system but I definitely used my DS much more.
Can we just acknowledge how pretty this title is?
"Why do people hate the PSP?" It just rolls off the tongue, no?
PSP? People rank the PSP at the same level of quality as the DS/3DS in terms of software. Higher on hardware of course. If my PSP wasn't a first generation model that has very obvious wear from my constant use, I would still be using it.
the psp was better then the ds so please tell me where this hate you speak of is? now the vita has nothing but hate. The vita is a god system but the memory card prices keep me from recommending it and now that almost no one carries vita games that memory card cost makes it even harder to to recommend if they dropped the memory card price to be acceptable at the least preferably they drop the prices in line with other memory formats. If your a Jrpg fan the system is awesome but thats about it anymore and that is sad because it was pushed as ps3 games on the go(more or less). then the whole lets tell ppl the 3g will let you play games online.
dude your timeline is kinda messed up how did you play 3rd birthday then wait for the release of chains of Olympus? that game was 3 years old before you had a chance to play 3rd birthday hell lets assume you live in japan it was still only a 3 months away from 3 years after GOW:COO released.
People will hate every.platform to an extent, there will also be plenty of supporters as well.
PSP has plenty of merits
Hate? The PSP sold around 80 million units worldwide, which is an insane success for any handheld, especially a non-Nintendo one.
In fact, the PSP is the most successful handheld in history not made by Nintendo, and nothing comes close to it.
Hate? Where? It built a strong brand. Although I would say that Sony ruined it with the Vita. :(
Yes hate and I will repeat what I already wrote " I had the PSP since 2008 and the hate from Nintendo fanboys (on all gaming sites) was even worse, than towards the Vita now.
And I know, because I´ve been debating with the trolls since then."
No one hates the PSP. It has great games. It wasn't well received initially but that was only for the first year or two.
Initially it just lacked a lot of good quality games to choose from(similar to Vita for it's entire lifetime). I still don't remember anyone actually disliking the console though. most thought it was pretty solid, much like they do the Vita, but Vita never got the advantage of getting enough good games in abundance. Ironically, piracy actually helped sell more PSP's, whereas Vita's over excessive anti-piracy measures were a hinderance to adoption, thus lowered software sales...although attach rate is much higher on Vita due to lack of piracy. I like the VIta better from a hardware stand point, but PSP has a better selection of games, but I do find the contrast between how the two systems sold, and for what reasons they sold to be rather interesting.
Yes hate and I will write what I already wrote " I had the PSP since 2008 and the hate from Nintendo fanboys (on all gaming sites) was even worse, than towards the Vita now.
And I know, because I´ve been debating with the trolls since then. "
Never hated mine (still have it) It's still an impressive piece of tech too. JB mine years ago though and use it now as a portable emulator.. playing Genesis and NES/SNES games on the go is awesome.
Playing arcade games on it is awesome too. Marvel vs Capcom looks great on the psp's screen.
I use my Vita primarily for playing PSP games. I sold off my UMDs and bought digital whenever I could, back in the day -- admittedly I bought a PSP Go, and that's why I did it then, but I'm pretty happy now.
Still have my Go, too. Got the TV adapter for it -- it's still pretty awesome, frankly. Sadly, was ahead of it's time.
It still amazes me that Sony made a handheld that stands up to the 3DS, in terms of game visual quality, back in 2004.
The psp is still my favorite handheld console, with titles like God of War: Chains of Olympus/Ghost of Sparta, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, GTA: Liberty/Vice City Stories/Chinatown Wars, Def Jam: FFNY: The Takeover, Resistance: Retribution, Burnout Legends, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, Daxter, Wipeout: Pulse, Medal of Honor: Heroes plus a shitload more. Not to mention how much more awesome the system is with custom firmware, allowing emulators for a shitload of old games from other systems. I used to play old arcade games on it like Marvel vs Capcom. The PSP was fucking awesome.
Most Nintendroids did ... I will write what I already wrote " I had the PSP since 2008 and the hate from Nintendo fanboys (on all gaming sites) was even worse, than towards the Vita now.
And I know, because I´ve been debating with the trolls since then."
I... don't think anyone really hates the PSP. Vita has it a loooooot worse since people have become much more toxic, aggressive and at the same time ignorant over the time.
Nah I should know... I will write what I already wrote " I had the PSP since 2008 and the hate from Nintendo fanboys (on all gaming sites) was even worse, than towards the Vita now.
And I know, because I´ve been debating with the trolls since then."
* Nobody hates the PSP...it's awesome. I actually play it more than my Vita, and it's game selection is solid
Wrong, I will write what I already wrote " I had the PSP since 2008 and the hate from Nintendo fanboys (on all gaming sites) was even worse, than towards the Vita now.
And I know, because I´ve been debating with the trolls since then. "
LOL at people who think there is no hate against the PSP. I´ve had the PSP since 2008 and trust me when I say, the hate from Nintendroids was ten times worse than towards the Vita now.
Also the hate against the PSP just shifted over to the PS Vita. I guess it is a good thing how the PSP is remembered, but saying there is/was no hate against the PSP, is just changing history... It was bad... much worse than the hate towards the Vita now. Also one of the reasons i really dislike gamespot and somewhat IGN... so much hate towards the PSP back in the days...
