Its not a valid RPG list without FF6 or KOTOR Im sorry but both were land breaking achievement games that blew minds away, its just impossible to have a list without either of them
yeah...i completely agree with you...there is people like me who loves play japanese RPG but don't like or don't get to addicted to the westerns RPGs...and probably the opposite:P
my fav rpgs are vagrant story, crono cross, pokemon was really addictive, ff7, 8, 9, 10, 12 and of corse dragon quest VIII for ps2...and westerns only WoW and diablo gets my attentions, didn't play baldurs gate...
Im going to go out on some random tangent and say that none of these games is worthy of the greatest RPG of all time *cough coughdiablocough cough anddiablo2cough cough*
Japanese RPGs arent even rpgs by definition. Theyre Adventure games. Your actions have no or little impact on the world (outside the main story), there is little to no choice involved, your character is often set in stone, so you cant choose wich way to go at lvl ups etc. Dont get me wrong, i like many Japanese games but none of them are as deep gameplaywise as a real western RPG (Baldurs gate 1/2, Nwn 2)
Actually, you could argue that Japanese RPGs are the *only* RPGs be definition. Think about it..."role playing game". In Western RPGs the character is role playing as you! Because you're changing the character and the world as you progress in the game. But in Japanese RPGs you're role playing as the character! You're stuck in the character's body and in his/her world, you're just along for the ride.
I'm not saying that's what I believe (I think both Western and Japanese are equally RPGs), but it's something to think about.
I disagree. Without the ability to choose its all "an adventure on a rail". Sure you could Look at it they way your saying but then everythings an rpg, from halflife to Colin mcrae Dirt.
Still my main problem with Japanese rpgs is the lack of choice.

Yep..you could say that. :p But only if you're going by the definition of "RPG = Role Playing Game", which is its true definition. That's my point - we define genres by what type of games have been classified in that genre. Not by the "true" definition of the genre. Just take a look at all these recent third person shooter games that are being dubbed "FPS games". When really FPS games should only be games in the first person perspective - from the character's eyes.
P.S. I like this discussion, I'm giving you a bubble for having it with me.
Every list is not what one expects cuz they weren't the ones who made it. I think Pokemon first gen should of been put on that list perhaps good old FFIV or VI. He did a good job of throwing out some odd ones to spice up the list rather than put out the ones we all know. Though I don't really think western rpgs are rpgs it's like Metroid isn't a fps but everyone still calls it that.
You have to seperate Western and Japanese RPG's. They are very different in style and Story.
I've played many Jrpgs, I'm actually playing Eternal Sonata right now, and Started Final Fantasy 8 the other day. Still playing Final fantasy 12 for the PS2.
Chrono Trigger was great, FFVII was awesome. These games were back to back I think with Square.
I've also loved th e"Breath of Fire series, which I was hoping Capcom brings back. Skies of Arcadia wasn't too shabby.
Western RPG's are finally getting more recognition, FINALLY in all markets. We are even seeing cross elements from both types of RPG's these days.
That being said you can see why I picked up a PS3 yesterday. You will have RPG's on all platforms I wanna dabble in and Owning all 3 is the only way to game.
now I agree terranigma was awesome and alot of the rpgs on that list we're, But ff7 being their is just....a cliche any more ff7 wasn't the best rpg it wasn't even in the list of 10 for me.
They left out so many rpgs that should have been there.
i've never played Terranigma, sounds really interesting! going to go track it down now
kk not a bad list....and yeah Terranigma seem quite interesting..!!
No KOTOR = fail
wow Chrono Trigger should have taken FFVII places, FF6 should be on there , as should KOTOR
Me thinks they should separate these top RPG lists into Western RPGs and Japanese RPGs.
