Sony: $399 Blu-ray Player; That's All, Folks

Washington, D.C. (November 1, 2007) -- Sony Electronics President Stan Glasgow says Blu-ray player prices will likely not fall under $399 this holiday season.

"(The player will be) in the $399 range...I don't expect it to go much lower than that," Glasgow said today, according to TWICE Magazine.

Glasgow made his comment today following an announcement from Wal-Mart that it will sell the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player for $98 as a special pre "Black Friday" sale starting tomorrow.

Swanni's trying his hardest to get out the "message". Guess I'll see him at Wal-Mart in the Black Friday line while I'm buying my new Eyetoy.

He's hoping for a price war.

A price war is good for consumers.

You get a PS3...what else do you need besides an HDMI cable and an HDTV.Even if you don't play games there is still a lot reasons to buy a PS3.They're so many features all in one box.

Poor Sony. I'm sorry. I know this will seem like a fanboy post, but how funny is it to watch a company that had it all fall so freaking hard? I mean, the great "Cell" is a number cruncher and the Blu Ray is taking a hit every day.

How does a company sitting on top screw up so bad?

ATLRoAcH4866d ago (Edited 4866d ago )

Isn't crunching numbers what all computer processors do?So doing it faster then everything else is a good thing right? And since when is Blu-Ray taking hits?Is it addicted to ganja?Isn't Blu-Ray the leading Hi-Def format?Did I prove you wrong simply by asking questions?Could I possibly ask any more questions?

I know what you mean Ac......Number crunching by the CELLBBE and the good sales of Blu-Ray (4:1) is a real testament to the company's committment to leading the way in video games. Having the most expensive console on the market at launch, it's a miracle they are where they are in sales now (less than a year) which is a real testament to the public's appreciation of such workmanship and integrity that goes into the device.

Now imagine how hard it would've been for them to overcome the "price" issues if there were some sort of red ring or disc scratching that plagued it's reputation other than being an expensive, reliable, and ambitious piece of kit? Cough, cough some people like Swanni cough and others cough, will do anything to make something out of thin air.

Word association game:

XBox 360 & HD-DVD = cheap, bargain basement, pedestrian.
PS3 & Blu-Ray = quality, stout reliability, performance.

Am I wrong?

Sorry ATlroach but you're trying to take a very complex process computers do to pump out games and simplifying it.

If all computers needed to do was crunch numbers to generate beautiful games there would be no need for 3d-cards in PC's, as PC's have faster processors then any gaming console. However a 3d-card is one of the most important aspects of building a gaming computer.

Nice try though, but if you've been in games as long as I have you'd know that logic is completely flawed. It's much more complex then just processing 0s and 1s. It's processing 0s and 1s in a very efficient manner using tricks and things a processor alone can't do. There is a reason Sony ended up having to add a 3d-card to the PS3 after thinking they wouldn't need to.

I'm not talking graphics I'm talking processing. The RSX handles graphics. The Cell does what its suppose to do process. It does it lightning fast too.Give me a minute and I'll pull out the real numbers.

While I'm pulling up those numbers how am I wrong it was in question form.

I don't have enough time to find the numbers right now maybe you could look it up.This should hold you over:

You obviously do not know what you are talking about. Just another uneducated PS3 fanboy. Read a book dude....

give it up for the guy with one bubble folks. I guess we can see a new username from him real soon...

Just for the record guys, computers are number crunchers, that is what machine language is. Even graphics cards. You guessed it, number crunchers with dedicated pathways...GPU...Graphics Processing Unit! What, you think programmers say "float yellow ball to right side of screen" and the computer does it? Please, why do you think they call it binary language? As in using the number 1 and the number 0 to program the computing device.

Roach, you get a thumbs up, LOL and Ras, go back to school!

Now, to get this train back on track, we are talking about BD players folks. With Toshiba throwing out a very low priced player, there will be a lot of people snatch them up. BD may be currently in the lead, but those companies we chose to follow can't sit on there laurals here. BD needs to step up to the plate show Toshiba just what quality means and not the quick buck to get people to purchase a tech that no one supports. I can almost hear it...

Toshiba exec #1 "well, we are screwed"

exec #2 "yeah, we spent all that money to get exclusive rights, and they still refuse to buy our equipment"

exec #1 "well, what should we do? We can't just give up, Microsoft won't let us"

Just then a MS agent walks through the door...

MS "WTF are you guys doing? Gates is P'd that you dropped the ball on this HD format war!" "You know you guys still need to pay us back for the royalties!"

Exec #1 "I know, how about we push those discontinued players to anyone who will carry them and price them so low the masses will have no thought but the instinct to say "Wow, what a great price, I think I'll pick one up, and one for my neighbor too.""

Exec #2 "Ha, Ha, Ha, at least we will get some money before we go belly up, and who cares about the consumer, its their own fault for not doing any research...what do we do with the two studios...they signed a contract?"
