Feature: PC Vs Console Gaming?

Today I would like to look at the age old question, PC vs console gaming. Everyone is looking for the ultimate gaming experience, and most people will tell you that it is the PC by default. Is this really the truth though? Sure you will get the BEST graphics and performance available on the PC both now and in the future, but the fact of the matter is that the inferior console versions look great as well. Luckily there is one gamer out there who has taken the time to make a few videos explaining the pros and cons of PC gaming because despite what many people believe, it isn’t for everyone. This particular gamer has been an owner of all three consoles of this generation from the start and has gotten into PC gaming over the past year. I now turn the spotlight to a gamer who is only looking for the best experience possible when it come to gaming, Solid Rev…

I am really surprised that people are sticking on the graphics thing so hard. PC gaming is more than graphics. There is frame rate and load times to think about when you are talking performance. The load times alone are huge. I wouldn't want to play a game like Dead Rising 2 on consoles with the huge load times every time you enter or leave your safe house, but on PC the load times are almost nill. Mass Effect 2 is made a lot smoother over all because every time you go someplace, it loads super fast.

The over all experience is very different on a PC. Alt+Tab is major boost to PC gaming. I can pause the game and then do just about anything else on my PC. The PC doesn't just have cross game chat, it has cross anything chat. I can stream my games and chat with a friend across the world about what is going on right now in my game. With a dual monitor setup your options grow even farther.

Options are greater all around on the PC than consoles. I can customize my UI to however I want it. Where on consoles you are stuck with what was built in. My Desktop looks nothing like anybody elses desktop, and it's functionality is tailored to my needs. That can't be said about consoles. This is a big fundamental difference between a lot of console and PC gamers. For a lot of PC gamers, it is very important to them that they control everything about their system and the experience they get from it. Where most console gamers are fine with what they got while always wanting more.

I own all the consoles and have gamed many many long hours on all of them(except my Wii). I really like my consoles, but the PC has my heart. This article only really says that PC gaming isn't for casual or the lazy, which is true. The PC is something that what you get out of it is a result of what you put into it.

I see. Did this hold back the PC graphics in Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, Battlefield 3, ect.? I've pointed out to many PC elitists that many of the best looking games ever on PC have also been multiplatform. I'm still waiting for any of them to successfully refute this point. The thing is both PC and consoles have advantages and disadvantages over each other. Yeah you get better performance with PC but there are alot of headaches that come with it. Console don't have the performance but are easy to use and so easy to maintain a child could do it. Your own analogy ferrai and civic. Ferrai expensive to buy, expensive to maintain and burn alot of gas. Civic affordable, cheap to maintain and better gas milage than ferrai.

All of those are the minimum specs for those games. So basically, yes, High end and Mid end PCs are more capable game machines than the HD consoles, but consoles are more capable than the lowest end PC's and Laptops that play most games, and developers are on record for specifically making their games work for LOW END PC's.
So if any machines are holding developers back, it's PC themselves that are the culprit....LOW END PCs and Laptops.

I've always said that comparing the "which one is better?" comparison between PC and console gaming is quite a useless and a waste of time thing to do.
PC will always have the upper hand when it comes to graphic since its quite obvious what is out there for options for upgrades for graphics cards.
Console developers have to work with what's in the box when they develop games and they are aware that there is a limit to consoles as far as graphics.
PC game development graphically can be pushed again due to what kind of graphics cards,processors,and RAM PC games can put and interchange in a PC.
With all that being said I personally will stick to console gaming because I don't have the time and the patience to have to worry about do I have a good enough PC to play a game.
I just like knowing that I pop in a disc and it will work.With all that being said, why don't we stop with all this PC versus console gaming BS and just play :)

I'm honestly very confused. I've been wanting to get a gaming PC for a while now, but when the time's come that I have the opportunity to, I'm wondering if it's worth it or not. The consoles have pretty much all the games that PC does, bar a few, and although there are a few good exclusives coming out, is it worth it dropping $750 when I already have a PS3 to play on? If a PC gamer could convince me to get one, or warn me not to, I'd really appreciate it.

Did you watch the videos in the link? I may get hated for saying so but I think he brings up some valid points and I'm a PC/PS3 gamer at present. TBH though my next PC won't be a gaming one. I do 99% of my gaming on PS3 so there is very little reason for me to drop all that money on a gaming rig when I can play the same games there and with people I know. I only really purchased this one to play SC2 and Diablo 3. I have several other games on PC but no one I know plays them on PC so I just end up playing them on PS3.

Ask yourself this questions: Are you as stupid as the guy on the video? Do you only play shooters AND are a bad loser? Are you willing to learn some stuff on your own? (it is not programming or shit... just learn to follow instruction generally) Can you build a computer? (on this point... Building a computer, for me, was easy as hell; built 3 with no problems on any).
Consider that most of the problems the guy on the video has are because he is lazy and impatient... are you like that?
Other than that, PC gaming is the way, I love it (built my first computer a year ago).

its because you havnt tried PC gaming since 2003 or something or you are expecting your laptop to be capable of gaming.

since 2007, a standard pc (ie, with a reasonable 512MB graphics card and dual core cpu) will run any game released to this date.

fluffydelusions makes a good point, the best platform for an individual is the platform which their friends buy their games on.

a load of people I know realised that they could spend £150 on a graphics card and max out crysis, so my multiplayer gaming is all on PC. Oh also, I cannot stand peer 2 peer multiplayer for shooters (inconsistent matchmaking, lag potential, lack of community sense, no mods or custom rules etc) so I guess that is another big factor, but I still get a game of Reach in now and again (after the matchmaking stops lagging out etc.) and enjoy it plenty.

And those type of comments, this article is not about allegiance and fanboyism. It's about which is better. Obviously, Pc is stronger, anyone who thinks it's effort to actually get a gaming Pc is just lazy and misinformed, go to the forum we have here, ask for one with how much your willing to spend on one, you will receive guidance, that is all.

For exclusives, Ps3 obviously. Exclusives doesn't auto mean the games are better by the way, just that there is more exclusives, it's a nice little fact that Multiplats are all better on Pc, even now it's starting to show up in gameplay(see BF3). And the difference in amount of Exclusives is actually very small. Go look at a list.

Features, again Pc by a long shot, same as XBL except with more features and free.

Cost, believe it or not, 800 is enough to max out games, BF3 being the exception, which you probably won't be able to max out, but still you'll be fine. High atleast(including 1080p, AA etc) then you have the deals on video games..steam etc. It's likely you won't need a monitor either if you are a console gamer already/

Comfort, Pc, mouse or keyboard, Or controller, it's up to you.

The difference is Cost anyway. Do you want to spend a big 800-1200 now, or spend that much over the whole time of owning a Console?

GTA4 happens to quite possibly be one of the most unoptimized ports of all time. And 800$ is more than enough for it, since it's pretty old now. I haven't played it for a while now, but I remember my old SLI GTX 275s and i7 920 running it perfect maxed out, and my current GTX 560ti and i5 2500k setup is FAARRR more powerful. And the GTX 560ti is considered a low-mid-range card (despite being a beast), so go figure.

Besides, the majority of hardcore PC gamers today spend LESS than $1000 on their initial rig, and max every game at 1080p and 60fps. Not $2000. And through Steam sales and games being $50 at launch, you make up the money very fast.

I've played the major console exclusives (ie, the reasons people buy the console) like Halo, Gears, MGS4, Infamous, GoW, Uncharted etc. All decent or amazing games, but theres so few of them at such high quality this generation with the third party developers mostly going multiplat.

If you think about PC exclusives, there are a lot more small budget games that are in no way badly made or shoddy, and you generally get a lot more enjoyment for the price. Console development these days is only good for large developers and it carries huge risks, so all the most innovative and unique games (for gamers, otherwise smartphone junk would be the most 'innovative') are on PC right now, as well as most of the mainstream. To be honest, I would say that PC wins the exclusive argument more than anything else (graphics etc.). It's those games like Terraria and League of Legends that seal the deal for me, theres far more playtime than the likes of Uncharted or Halo.

I have cashed out more for my 360 gaming setup + games + accessories than my PC gaming setup + games + accessories, and used my 360 for considerably less time (and have far less games).

Don't be an idiot, and actually look at the ways the console gaming giants are ripping you off (Sony aren't too bad).

You can get an amazing PC these days for £500 that will max out crysis, the price of the graphics card is the only difference between the cost of a normal PC and a gaming PC, and that (at about £150) is cheaper than a console. Obviously, if you factor in the other money that you spent anyway on a non-gaming PC or laptop, then yeah it seems to cost more...

My first gaming was done on console. I briefly switched to PC gaming, then went back to console. Years later, I briefly switched back to PC... then went back to console. I don't see myself ever going back to PC gaming again, beyond having a game to play on my laptop while I'm on a plane or something. I just don't see the attraction to it that others seem to.

I think it depends on the game and the gamer.

Can a PC give me the Little Big Planet experience? Racing at the level, depth and quality of Gran Turismo? Does the PC have my fill of JRPGs? Will Uncharted 3 come out on Windows? There are many more examples.

Simply put, the PC doesn't completely fit my personal gaming tastes. I'm not into shooters, RTSs and not huge on MMORPGs.

I did buy Witcher 2, however. Besides that, I can't remember the last time there was a quality PC game (that appealed to me) that I could not get on a console.

Learn to use dev kits along with modding tools and you can do a hell of a lot more than what LBP offers, but of course it's not as simple.

If you just want a game to view pretty cars then GT is obviously for you, but when it comes to the depth and level of simulation there are numerous titles on PC that easily out do GT. iRacing, Live for Speed or even rFactor offer a much deeper experience if you're looking for a sim.

There are JRPGs out there on PC, the vast majority of older JRPGs were released on PC as well as consoles or can be easily emulated. A couple of more recent Final Fantasy games were also released on PC.

Don't be fooled into thinking that the PC platform is nothing but FPS, MMO and RTS because in fact I have quite a large collection of PC games and the majority of them are RPGs and racing games. I don't mean to belittle the titles you mentioned, but it's like me saying I don't like TPS and sport games so I don't like console gaming.

I don't WANT to learn how to use dev kits. I want to buy a game and have fun. I'm a grown man with a full time job, and I'm also an English major. I'm not tech-minded. I'm good at writing papers and giving speeches. Not everyone is going to be able to make up their own Little Big Planet and have fun doing it.

I would have to experience these other racing sims to see if they truly match up to Gran Turismo...in this area I have no reply.

However, when it comes to JRPGS or even SRPGS, not going to happen on the PC in the way it happens on consoles. Even the Nintendo DS smokes the PC in this regard. That's just a fact based on evidence that we can all google.

You may not like that Witcher 2 is the only PC game to have appealed to me in ages, but it's a personal truth that quite honestly is immune from judgement.

Ive been a PC gamer with eight years and its only lately I am starting to see the benefit of console gaming. With a console theres no such thing as hoping your hardware is good enough or if some part of your PC is dodgy and will throw you out of the game unexpectedly. In the past two weeks my PC has been very unstable and gaming is almost impossible even though I can watch movies with no problems my PC keeps crashing games every ten minutes. Ive stress tested every part of my PC and cant find what the problem is. I've even done a fresh windows install.

I am always trying to keep a good balance with my PC hardware so I can play the latest games at the highest settings , but at the end of the day its starting to cost too much. at least when you buy a console you dont need to upgrade once every two years or so which is cheaper in the long run.

If you haven't already I'd make sure nothing is overheating, if you have overclocked any part of the PC put it back to it's default speeds, run memtest to see if it's a memory problem, and make sure all your drivers are up to date and installed correctly. Also if you have a spare PSU try that, I had a PC once that would crash frequently because the PSU was gradually starting to fail.

imo the most hardcore gamer lives on the PC. not because of games, but because of the level of ineraction, knowledge of your rig, and custimization that the PC has to offer.

we can overclock, tweak, upgrade, tryy this, do that, mod to our hearts content, make a sweet map or download someone's idea for a map or texture pack, we have as PC gamers endless options we can do with our games and rigs.

Consoles are great, i like my PS3 a lot. but i hate proprietary systems. i hate not being able to get online like when PSN was down or Live is down. if i want to put Linux on my PS3 i cant because Sony wags their finger telling me "NO!!".

TLTR: i like the open end of the PC compared to consoles. and i hate not being able to game without the communities ive met on PC using Ventrilo and TeamSpeak.

all im saying is that what console fanboys fail to realize is that ALL consoles are essentially pcs/computers just cant do what a pc can and what it can it does at sometimes substantially lower quality, frame rates, graphics, loading, saving and such.

on a slightly different topic, fools that say gaming (fps in particular) is at the same level of skill as pc are on crack, pc fps doesnt use 'aim assist or auto aim' every fps game on console by default has that shit on cause aiming with a controller is bullshit and yet people think their the pros using a controller with aim assist on and it makes a huge difference, if been a pc gamer for 14 years now and console gamer aswell but pc is just way better

a quality wireless kb/m is worth so much man, I pc game on a 50" plasma a lot of the time, chilling in a leather recliner with 5.1 sound with some sexy Klipsh towers and rock out to some starcraft 2 with my wireless kb/m, its the only way to game:)

I am a hardcore console gamer with 100,000 gamerscore. I played PS3/360 since launch. Recently i built a PC and absolutely love it. Better multiplayer, better community, you save money on games and better graphics. Basically you buy a game for cheaper and its superior in every way.

I wonder why i didnt do it sooner. Most PC games come with controller support so you can hook it up to your big tv for an easy transition. Dont believe the hype about keyboard and mouse users will destroy controller users. I see no difference playing against K/M users with my controller. I use a 360 controller for all games. I never use K/M.

Ill admit I will be no competition for you because there is no "plug and play" native support for a controller in that game. Sure there is external programs that you can use but its not the same.

Its hard for long time PC gamers to understand why some people would rather use a controller for shooters but for controller users its like second nature. The thumbsticks are like an extension of your hand and just "feels right".

I hope more developers will add native controller support for all games so console gamers can make an easy transition. We should all have a choice to use a KB/M or controller for games.

Yea I own a ps3 and xbox360 along with my gaming pc. But every time I try to play on console for too long a get really bored for some reason, and it's not because of the game. There are games that can hold my interest out there like MGS4, but for the most part I always just kind of get "bored" after playing them. I try so hard to like it but I just can't that much.

99% of you guys on N4G have to post your comments on a PC, work on a PC, HAVE A PC. Every electronics you own tries to imitate a PC. Since PC is an integral part of your life, it shouldn't be a chore or foolish to invest in a good PC to cover the gaming aspect as well.

In all my honesty, I truly believe that consoles are PCs for the poor and the unsophisticated. Of course, there are times when I just want to pop a disc into a console and start playing. However, I never deluded myself into thinking that consoles are in anyway better than PCs. Also, people who says that you need to constantly upgrade your PC is clearly misinformed. Upgraded my PC when Crysis came out in 2007 and I never have to upgrade since. 5 years already.

PS: Just finished Demons Soul. Blueblood Swordmans build is awesome. Freaking Black Phantoms keep invading, I had to fight like 20 dudes. I wish the Maiden in Black could be freed. I couldn't bring myself kill her even if its just a video game. Can't wait for Dark Souls.

Just remember that pc did set the benchmark in graphics with Crysis 2007, but hence no pc could run the game properly!!!

BTW Battlefield 3 does look superior on the pc version, but it is still on consoles! And you gona have to pay alot more than $300 to make it look better than the console version of the game! And dont try to bullshit me bout that! My pc costs (if i buy it now) R4500 without a screen and it can barely run crysis 1 on medium! Its a core i5 650 - 4gb ram ddr3 gaming geil, 9600gt zotac special edition, and alot more! Lets say it cost around $450 in my country! The ps3 costs around R3000 which make it $300!

High-end pc's cost around $1000, and yea it will outdo the ps3 - Just look at battlefield 3, witcher 2 and the new metro last night! Yes pc is better, but for the first 3 years the console can compete in terms of graphics! Just look at ucharted 2, gears of war 2 and even gtaiv/red dead redemtion! Yes the new mod in pc gtaiv looks amazing, but you need a strong pc remember!

DX 11 does give some of the best advance user interface sequences known to animals of the same kind! I mean the tesselation on the walls, the lightning on rocks that lay on the floor, and wow even the grass talk back to you if u turn on dx11 settings!

PC is better than consoles, but its only because it costs alot more, and you can upgrade it every hour :D

If i had the money, id go for sli 580gtx, core i7, 16 gb ddr3 gaming memory, triple clutch performance (ok now im talking bout cars) etc.

Anyway, enjoy the nice pc looking games, but also enjoy the nice console games coming up later this year!!

I agree with everything but the price. Monitors are not required for pc. With that in mind a pc that can max out anything at the moment is about £600.

(I built 2 in the past year. Both the same parts, both can max out any game at 1080p)
