Digital Foundry Face-Off: Alice - Madness Returns

David Bierton writes:

"Across all formats, there's no doubt that the PC version is the most polished of the three, regardless of whether or not you have access to the exclusive NVIDIA PhysX features. In terms of the consoles, while both versions do come recommended, the final nod goes to the 360. MLAA may well give an image quality boost to the PS3 version, but owing to the nature of the art itself, the lack of edge-smoothing on the 360 game isn't that much of an issue. Similarly, while welcome, the Xbox's plus points - texture and effects improvements - aren't significant enough to weigh into any purchasing decision. However, performance is the key difference here, and that's where the Xbox 360 provides an advantage that translates into a tangibly more consistent gameplay experience. "

Does that even make sense? Shaman, when performance goes the way of the PS3 it never gets "the nod" PS3 games seem to need both Performance and looks. Which I find strange.

PirateThom4475d ago

I'm sure there's other reasons for why the 360 gets the nod, frame rate for example... but to me it sounds like "the PS3 looks better but it doesn't matter because we say so".

Fishy Fingers4475d ago

Not to me. Basically it reads like the MLAA is the only plus the PS3 has over the 360. It's UE3, like usual, the 360 performs better.

If you quote the entire paragraph, then yes.
"Similarly, while welcome, the Xbox's plus points - texture and effects improvements - aren't significant enough to weigh into any purchasing decision. However, performance is the key difference here, and that's where the Xbox 360 provides an advantage that translates into a tangibly more consistent gameplay experience."

If you look at the performance on PS3 its quite obvious why.Lots of tearing, lots of frame drops and textures seem to be parred back in some instances.

DrFUD4475d ago

He's trying to say since colors and objects are purposely deformed and different he thinks you can look at worse quality images and care less.

jack_burt0n4475d ago

Yep your right its a worthless comparison, how can you mix so much opinion and bias into a technical analysis is quite incredible.

Only thing to take away from it, is

"Both versions are vsynced"

and the "ps3 MLAA implementation holds its own against the pc's top AA settings".

the game features HD audio on ps3 @ 7.1

Those are facts, no BS.

Fishy Fingers4475d ago (Edited 4475d ago )

Quite selective with your quotes arent we. Ignore the better frame rate, better textures etc and pick the MLAA even though they state the art style almost makes the use of AA redundent and the 7.1 audio which what, 1% of gamers are using?

kingdoms4475d ago (Edited 4475d ago )

Yeah that suckes my sofa is against the back wall l would love to use 7.1 on my new AVR. Doesn't matter I guess I don't have a PS3 anymore. I never heard of this game it seems to be getting people excited. My AVR is called 7.1 but It's actually 9.1 I use PLIIz instead which many say is better than RBL and RBR 7.1

BlackKnight4475d ago

The key part of the comparison is the performance effects controller response which means it impacts gameplay directly, it creates laggy controls.

"In these instances the PS3 version not only suffers from a greater amount of screen tearing, but many more frames are dropped as well, resulting in some heavy slowdown which serves to dull controller response significantly – in situations like this, gameplay is undoubtedly impacted, and combat is exactly the kind of situation where a consistent frame-rate and controller response is a must."

I guarantee history will give this game the same reputation as the first one, an overlooked gem.

theonlylolking4475d ago

The 360 is overall better but there is to much bloom.

frnkyl4475d ago

I'm just happy multiplats are using MLAA now.

SlipperyMooseCakes4475d ago

Yeah the 360 performs slightly better over all. Also, I noticed in some of the videos there is grass on the ground with color on the 360 version and not on the PS3. That has happened in a couple games now, wonder why?

I personally think there's better on gamepass then what was listed. State of decay imo is better then anything listed. Recore seemed alright for what I played on there also.

Is Recore any better to play now?

Concertoine258d ago

Yeah, especially on One X or Series X. It kinda feels like a PS2 platformer, but in a good way. I liked it.

KillBill259d ago

Odd that he specified 'Game Pass Ultimate' instead of just 'Game Pass' just so he could include a relatively weak choice comparably in 'Alice: Madness Returns' which is available with EA Play. SoD was a far better overlooked game to have listed.

Crows90259d ago (Edited 259d ago )

Dont know why they keep listing ultimate. Gamepass is the better value....but the reason I think is that ultimate includes online gwg.

MadLad258d ago

I mean, as someone who games both on PC and Xbox, Ultimate makes a whole lot of sense. There's console exclusives and PC exclusives. And, at the end of the day, EA Play is still a perk of having Ultimate. When I open Gamepass, the EA Play catalogue is sitting right there for me. It's as much part of Gamepass as any other title I'm looking at, right?

Alice: Madness Returns has been pulled from Steam again

From Games Radar: "Alice: Madness Returns has been removed from Steam just months after fans fought to get the creepy horror back onto Valve's PC platform.

The sequel was removed from sale back in 2016 following a DRM problem, an issue that kept the game off Steam for a full five years. It was finally reinstated in February 2022, only for fans to notice that, once again, it had been mysteriously pulled again earlier this month.

The game's Steam page says "at the request of the publisher, Alice: Madness Returns is no longer available for sale on Steam", but that's a standard disclaimer that doesn't really tell us very much. "

I'm hoping that the PC version is optimized and doesn't have bugs.

MadLad459d ago

If I remember correctly, aside from having to change something in the .ini file to unlock the 30fps cap, the game is actually a decent port.
