Nickerous writes, "At its core, Super Mario Land is pure Mario. You run and jump your way through levels just as you would in the NES games. The difference here is that Nintendo added vehicles for Mario to traverse the land. Nothing like a power up, though. In one level, Mario is inside a submarine and another level has Mario flying an airplane. Another difference is the main villain. Bowser must be on vacation, because this time, Mario is opposed by Tatanga, the mysterious spaceman."
