Square-Enix: PS1 Era Towns are Boring

In a previous interview, you may remember that members from the Final Fantasy XIII development made a most infamous comment, claiming that making towns in high definition games was "very hard."

Speaking to RPGSite at E3 2011, Final Fantasy XIII-2 director Motomu Toriyama shared some more details regarding this common criticism, as well as what their plans were to improve on that issue.

When asked if we could possibily see towns similar to those in games like Final Fantasy VII through IX, Toriyama said, "we did take it seriously that there was a huge criticism over no towns—we know people didn’t like it and so we took that and have towns in the new one." He went on to describe the type of things that will be in said towns, such as shops, and exploration.

However, Toriyama then went on to say, "I think if we created towns in the same way as we did for Final Fantasy VII-IX, it would be quite boring, and so it is very difficult." His reasoning was that, in XIII-2, they added an AI for every NPC in the game, which allows them to act on their own within the environment. He says it's a "quite different type of town you would find in a Final Fantasy game."

The story is too old to be commented.

Ultimately the good news is that towns are in this game even if they are different to the traditional ones...

The people below are complaining, and mean while for those who Actually read the article and instead of just the 'spin' title has:

"I think if we created towns in the same way as we did for Final Fantasy VII-IX, it would be quite boring, and so it is very difficult." He's saying that made they made concept of Towns even more interesting than those of 7-9 by giving the NPC's AI. I swear, what is it about N4G and people only reading the article titles?

WKC had towns and they were pretty decent, don't know why they did'nt have them it's not like japanese devs suck it's more like stupidity.asains are not as smart as people make them out to be tho some are i guess but lately i have found most of them incompetent like the new co-op kid at work he can't do anything right he just dose not want to learn he go's off with this weird smile and screws up but if he tried he might be good i have to give him super easy jobs which he take forever with ughh

come on square make us a great game!! with a tun of towns! and stuff, show us you can be as good as wrpg devs!!

Redempteur2688d ago

if only they had enough STORAGE CAPACITY for every area they designed to reach the final release ..

Thank you stupid console that held back ff13

Yea ff13 didnt have town cause the 360 err acualy lost odyssey has about 10 towns and blue dragon does also so big hd towns can be done on the 360. Im guessing it was too much work for them or they just didnt want towns in ff13 like they said?

Anyways ff13-2 is sounding great i cant wait

THE FACT IS :
the entire area around lighting house ( and the things associated ) were cut down from teh game due to the size ...

This is a simple truth ... what they wanted to do and provide , they couldn't

there are plenty of games on PS3 that don't have to worry about the size on the disc ...and that is another fact

Apollyn2688d ago

No PlayStation 1 towns aren't boring. Just all your modern games are boring.

Kee2688d ago

I was gonna write exactly that ^.

Eamon2688d ago

As much as I agree with you, I don't think Toriyama meant that towns in general are boring.

He specifically said that he added AI to all NPCs to give them all a unique feel whereas in the PS1 FF games each NPC would just be standing there waiting for you to interact with it before giving you dialogue about the town's history or current events of the town.

Although to be honest, I don't find that boring at all.

Kee2688d ago

So, they'll be the same... But more lifelike. That's fine by me.

otacon682688d ago

Yea because todays tunnels are so much fun...

I think my sarcasm detector just exploded due to high levels of sarcasm.
