Is Xbox's digital distribution service really going to threaten DVD rentals? Will it replace DVD rentals in the near future? Here is a blog article nailing down the matter once and for all.
It doesn't force you to buy into an HD format and you are available to still watch HD Movies!! M$ really had its customers in mind when they created the 360. Yes there is only ONE flaw with the 360 and that is covered with their extended warranty! Compared to its main competitor, who had the movie industry in mind when they put their console out, M$ has truly created an excellent entertainment device!
http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News... you posted 7 storys on ratchet and clanks scores...All you need is one story pointing too gamerrankings or even metacritic instead of that sort of spam...and lets be real..here is the definition of spam..
"Spamming is the abuse of electronic messaging systems to indiscriminately send unsolicited bulk messages. While the most widely recognized form of spam is e-mail spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media"
exactly being 7 storys on one topic..wake up and stop being such a hypocrite dude...it makes all ps3 owners look like the paranoid tinfoil hat wearing douche bag you seem too be.
do you really think that everytime someone wants to watch a moive, they're gonna sit a wait hours for it to download?
do you know how long it takes to download HD movies even with the best connection speed?
also, most people want to OWN the movies, not pay for them just to have them disappear a few days later.
as far as there only being one problem with the 360, you must be smokin rocks. RRoD is covered, but disk read errors, disk scratching issues and the other hardware issues are NOT.
Xbox 360 is a great entertaiment machine, but no way in hell it will replace dvd rentals because not everybody own 360 and not all 360 owners have internet connection that enable them to rent movies. For example right now there is about 11 million people that own 360 and not all of them have xbox live. In the US alone there are about 300 million people and probably almost every single one of them own dvd players and some people even own about 3 or 4 like me. So 360 is not even a threat to movie rentals.
In fact blockbuster video is trying too counter nextflix with their own mail dvd service...cant beat them..might as well join them. also on topic I did watch a movie on the xbox this evening..while it was cheap and easy..it did take a long time too download a hd movie. it took me like 2 whole days ...also you dont keep the movie....its like 9 days and it disappears..which i dislike alot.
It only takes about 3 minutes to begin watching the movie and the entire thing loads in minutes. You also have 14 days to begin watching the movie, not 9. Nothing, even game demo's that are brand new takes 2 days. Where the hell did that come from?
but you are wrong about a couple of minutes download on my side....I downloaded the hd version of the movie and it took nearly dam 2 days...maybe my connection is sheit but just because im a xbox fan im not going too sit here and lie dude...
I must also add that i dont just sit there and wait for the movie....i waited for like 2 hours and after that did other things....so maybe thats why it took 2 days...
I have to drive over an hour away from where i live to rent movies (HD or SD). Since i have a good internet connection though (10MB) i can just rent movies from the marketplace and save myself a trip. Now i don't think renting movies from your Xbox will ever surpass actually going to the store but it is really convenient for people like me.
even if the ps2 had dvd rentals and keep in mind that there 120million strong they would never challenge going to blockbuster or hollywood video and the 360 has sold what roughly around 10mill do your math this artical is stupid
What are you talking about? PS2 didn't even have a hardrive... PS2 didn't even have online service like the original xbox has! PS2 didn't have DOWLOADABLE MOVIES, I believe Sony said there was going to be before it launched, but again another example of Sony underdelivering! The PS3 doesn't even have that feature yet!
Xbox 360- 29.1% pick 360 (235,203 votes)consoles sold 12,117,353 sold
PS3- 20.2% pick PS3 (163,161 votes)consoles sold 5,013,661 sold

However, Digital Distribution will not take over buying a disk to play in your home for a long time. When people buy something they like to be able to physically hold it in there hands so for DD to take off world wide, it will take some time and prices will have to dictate it's choosing it.
Its not that 360 will kill dvds but with internet connections getting stronger 360 has made the first really big step in what will be the future not so far down the road which is digital distribution...it is the future and it will only grow as the years go on hell its taken over music time for movies
Also, dont you love the "Network & Studios" section!!!! I have a mad collection of the Family Guy series, and the "Beginning of the Universe" vid from National Geographics.
I think movies online is where we are going but you are always going to need a Media to back up your files and that disc will be Blu-Ray which will support 100 Gig and 200 Gig Disc. Actually 100 gig disc are ready to be manufactured already and are compatable with the PS3 already.
24 hours from the time you hit 'play' to watch the movie ... rentals will stay available to you for 14 days if you choose to DL one and not hit 'play' right away.
paying a stupid pay per view channel is a hell of alot different then going and dling a movie that u get to keep for a day like a typical rental sry but your argument is bull wow u can watch this movie at this time n thats it woooowzzz......with this u can dl what you want when you want it and no questions asked and dont have to be there during those certain 2 hours the movie plays like really comparing pay per view to digital distribution that is jus stupid man
unless you also have a PVR in wich case you can pause it fast forward it and rewind. I am assuming you can do this with DD as well. But once you have it on your PRV HDD you can keep it there as long as you want, watching it over and over.
i dont think it will take over dvd's, the only thing that will most likely is high definition disc's, but even that doesnt look so good, since i believe all bought movies throughout the year, what was 87% dvds, and 13% high def, so it will take a few more years for that to become in full swing, even though i believe blu-ray will dominate, or both formats survive somehow, it will eventually way before the whole digital distribution process is in everyhouse
Digital distribution is a trend, the most probable future, but it has nothing that big to do with X360... You know you can pay-per-view a movie in you TV by your cable for what? 10 years? Since not much time ago, you can legally buy movies in the internet, just like music...
You indeed can do it on 360, which is a good thing, but no, it's not a 360's thing and isn't 360 the responsable for DVD rentals decadence. Most like just more one feet to the botton...
sells more then Amazon.com and its only in America. People are willing to wait to download big movies except driving to the store to rent and to take it back. When the movie expires you simply delete it off the HDD and your done.
Home wireless servers and digital distribution will be the future.
BTW anything else in the same business as someone else threatens their way of life.
THIS reminds me of FF10 for the PS2. Mind blowing!!!! This game looks to destroy anything that comes out for any system. The CG is mind blowing, the in game is also the truth of what the game is like. Man i just wet my pants..lol
IF THAT GAME WAS ONLY ON PLAYSTATION 1, EVERYONE WOULD BUY A PLAYSTATION 1.............
IF THAT GAME WAS RELEASED ON STALE OLD BREAD ****, I'D BUY THE BREAD **** THAT'S HOW EXCITING THIS GAME LOOKS.
oh MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!
INFINITE UNDISCOVERY is the most UNBELIEVABLE game I've seen in five years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ANY CONSOLE WHO HAS THAT GOD-LIKE GAME........YEP....IF JAPAN DOESN'T BUY XBOX TO PLAY THAT MOTHER ********** INCREDIBLE GAME, THEY ARE HOPELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
although after looking at that game man, this is definitely not going to be the case.......PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BUY THE XBOX IN DROVES FOR THIS GAME, HELL MAYBE EVEN MORE THAN HALO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that's how AWESOME this game is feeling.....IT WAS LIKE GOD CAME DOWN, SAYING LET 'THERE BE LIGHT' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guy above me, I think you may need to lay down for a while...
Anyways truth is Digital Dist. will not take hold in this country unless the do some major revamps of our connection speeds. Their just to slow for this sort of thing. Now in Japan though were their average connection speed is about 6 times our absolute best...maybe, just maybe. But not here, no not in the US.
I think digital dist. will in fact grow a significant market share over the next 2 yrs, will it take over disc's, uhm hell no but micro has already demonstrated it can be succesful and there are already plenty of signs of other companies looking in that direction, theres huge profits in it for content providers, movie studios, etc and consumers like the convenience at the right price= the groundwork for faster connection speeds is not as far off as some may think, with the right motivation ($$$) you'd be surprised what companies working together can accomplish in a relatively short period.
(The US)(and most other countries) need to get a slightly faster speed bump to get DD into the "big boys", but I think that the answer is Optical Cable internet(FIOS for example)
Well its not really motivation its just simple economics. The main reason Japan has the best speed in the world is because all 150 odd million of them live in an area the size of Texas. So its very cost efficient to lay down the wires for the area size(This is also one of the reason our cell phone network is below par with most of the Europe/Asia). Where as in the US it could cost billions to lay down a network that might serve 10-15 million. And I just don't see any network company having the resources/desire to do that. Especially since, aside from large files such as movies, the current network speed is fine. But skip ahead say 20 years and I'll give you a buck fifty if DD isn't mainstream. :)
p.s. They are currently building a new Super Collider called the Large Hadron Collider(LHC). It slams protons together at just 1 billionth off of the speed of light. Anyways because of the amount of information gathered during 1 test is so great they created a new network so that it could be distributed to scientist as quickly as possible. The theoretical limit for it is 10GB a sec. yea 10 Giga Bytes. And within 5 years they expect to be able to get up to 100 GB a second. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id...
I want to own the movies and so do many others...thats why DD sucks and will not be here...and there are a lot of movies that live will never have....that are owned by sony...and blu ray will be here and dvd for the next 15 years
But it will become a viable alternative to going to the store and renting/buying the movie on an optical media format. It's just like online shopping. Online shopping didn't kill off retail stores. It just gave some of us an alternative means of purchasing. It's for those who dont like to drive to the store, deal with crowds of people, and stand in line to purchase what they want.
Netflix is already trying this with computers. Sure you can pay for thier service to get movies in the mail, but they also know some of thier customers would rather download the movie than go pick it up or wait in the mail. I wouldnt be surprised if Blockbuster or Hollywood Video jumped into the Digital Distribution game too.
It's all about choices and Digital Distribution is another choice.
Bleh DD isn't going to hurt anything, for a couple bucks more I can buy a tangible copy of the movie that WON'T deactivate itself after a certain amount of time like the movies in the marketplace. That's what happened to that lame ass DIVX player from Circuit City back in the day, remember that? Hah nope!!
And you can by CDs anywhere from Best Buy to your local drug store. So if anyone thinks DVD is going anywhere in the next 10yrs is stoned or just a HD DVD or Blu-Ray "dee dee dee"
Online shopping is slowly killing retail stores, I would rathe shop online then go down to the shops. One, because its easy to shop online and doesn't take too myuch effort and two, the games that I buy off play.com are much cheaper and arrive to my door in 3-5 days. Although, retail stores can do good deals and you get the game the day you buy it.
I don't think that DD will take over DVD rentals, I think it will slowly take a chunk of the market from the formats.
