Bethesda Lands Big Funds for MMOs

A $300 million investment in Bethesda Softworks parent ZeniMax Media will be used in part for the financing of MMOs.

ZeniMax and Bethesda, creator of 2006's standout RPG The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, will be using the funds from Providence Equity Partners for "future growth, increased game development and publishing, facilitation of acquisitions, and financing of massively multiplayer online games."

The investment follows news this summer of the formation of Rockville, Md.-based ZeniMax Online, a dedicated MMO division headed up by former Mythic producer Matt Firor, whose work includes Dark Age of Camelot. ZeniMax Online's project is currently under wraps.
