How the Zombie is Evolving in Video Games

During the past year we have seen a rise in 'zombie modes' being put into games. With the recent release of a zombie DLC for Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption and a really badass looking zombie game Dead Island coming out, I ask the question: How is the zombie game evolving? Call of Duty: World at War is arguably responsible for implementation of 'zombie modes' into FPS, their 'Nazi Zombie' mode was extremely popular and the game almost became known just for this add-on. A lot of us can identify with the mindless blasting of slow paced zombies from classics like House of the Dead. It's a throwback to our days of the arcade. Are these 'zombie modes' killing the actual zombie genre of games or are they helping?
