it captures the theme of being alone in a dark world.
if i were some random guy walking into a gamestop and just so happened to a glance at the cover art, i would have a small sence of what the game would be like, and not be misled.

Wow I seriously don't get some of the hate on the box art? Personally I love it. It's very simple, and has a nice artistic vibe to it. Looks way better than a cliched box art with dudebro character killing aliens. If I was in a gamestore that box art would catch my interest...but hey, that's just me.
