Musings on EA's quest for a standard game console platform

Electronic Arts' senior executive Gerhard Florin recently complained about the current state of multiple gaming platforms, and wished for a single, unified hardware standard. If this standardized hardware gaming platform sounds vaguely familiar, it's because it has been done before. It's called 3DO, created by Trip Hawkins, the original founder of Electronic Arts.

Ars Technica looks back on the last disastrous attempt to create a standardized console (which got creamed by the Sony PlayStation) and reasons why 3DO was doomed from the beginning, and examines what has changed since then and future possibilities of a standard set-top box.

also while you guys were playing Street Fighter for Snes i was playing this masterpiece perfect arcade
