PSX Extreme - Dear Sony, As you work to return the PlayStation Network to its fans, we offer this letter, in conjunction with our readers, as we have taken the liberty of assessing their general response to this ordeal.

Good letter. About what I thought about things. While we blame the cyber criminals (be careful who you label that, though: Hotz wasn't a criminal; the guys who brought down PSN WERE), we cannot just go "poor Sony" because they fucked up big with making sure it couldn't happen and, regardless of WHAT was "out of date", that they did enough to make sure that it was as secure as it could've been. We should add, though, that Sony cannot forget about consumer rights in this process. As much as we want the PSN to be secure, Sony cannot play the blame game with everyone or just assume everyone is guilty. Just because someone who wants to get your identity for a free ride in life hacks PSN is a criminal (and should be treated that way), doesn't necessarily people who want to play homebrew games on the PS3 are criminals. Fanboys on this site (and others, too) have failed miserably to separate the two (knowing that if you introduced a type of homebrew program of your own tomorrow, they would praise that like no one's business, though I wouldn't blame them there). You have also failed to do so, Sony, and your actions fail to tell us that you're not just after the people who brought down PSN to do malicious and universally illegal things, but also after those that have shown to be smarter than you out of jealousy and "OMG, gotta close THAT off, too". The fanboys are the minority: the rest of us that like your work are not going to give you constant free rides, nor are we going to just say that everything is okay. You fucked up big, Sony, both in security and in consumer rights. In other words, we can forgive, but we won't soon forget. Don't fuck up again, or that forgive thing might not be so easy to receive. Hell, with the way you and your portable public chorus are STILL treating the people in the OtherOS CAL, I'm not sure why we are when you're still not learning the consumer rights part of this lesson (the jury's still out on the security part of this).
