Amazon Server Said to Be Used in Sony Attack

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN)’s Web Services cloud- computing unit was used by hackers in last month’s attack against Sony Corp. (6758)’s online entertainment systems, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

Hackers using an alias signed up to rent a server through Amazon’s EC2 service and launched the attack from there, said the person, who requested anonymity because the information is confidential. The account has been shut down, the person said.

Yeah me too

@ Elimin8

Sony fanboys tend to be irrational

limewax3025d ago (Edited 3025d ago )

Not really, Wouldn't get used on hackers anyway, would get used on rapists and serial killers who deserve it though, on topic, if this is true then actually that would mean the hack was not Sony's fault (on security side of it) it would have been more a matter of having joined cloud recently and that being expoited

My reaction to seeing yet another article on this issue other than "PSN resumes service today"...

@ limewax... "if this is true then actually that would mean the hack was not Sony's fault (on security side of it) it would have been more a matter of having joined cloud recently and that being expoited"

Hadn't thought of that. May not be the case but sounds highly plausible...

@Emerge... What's the point of the Agree/Disagree-Bubbles system if it is overly used and there is sometimes no constructive criticism or legitimate case to voice your opinion? It's like we're all gamers and rather than try to make sense of some of the utmost garbage we read on here and right the wrong or think of ideas that -who knows- some devs might read about and take as feedback, we spend the entire time fighting each other.... Some people on here are too biased, angry and bitter and are also killing/hurting the gaming community! Gaming included.......

My 2cents...

"What's the point of the Agree/Disagree-Bubbles system if it is overly used and there is sometimes no constructive criticism or legitimate case to voice your opinion?"

I've been questioning that heavily for a while now. It wouldn't be as bad if people were forced to reply after that.

I wondered if it was at all related. I remember that Amazon's cloud service went down right at the same time the PSN was hacked. I bet the same group were the one's responsible for the Epsilon hack that they had the congress hearings with Sony about. I wonder who else got hit and they just haven't figured it out yet or have stayed quiet?

Prototype3024d ago

I was thinking the same thing when all this first started; then the majority had to send in countless rumors and conspiracy theories which made a lot of people even forget about the amazon breach.

Thecraft19893025d ago (Edited 3025d ago )

5 hackers where arrested in England on the 3rd of may for suspicion of hacking PSN.

The guy surely must have more information for the authorities if he knows this much. I hope they get the culprits ASAP.

Amazon should give me a free game as well

Now I'm waiting for the "Amazon security failure" "Amazon's security sucks" articles.

Also supports the notion that the hackers had a well thought out plan.

mcstorm3025d ago

I don't thing it will be to long before they fine the person or people who did this as I hope they make a show of them as what that have done is very wrong. Ok they may not like what Sony have done but they have not hurt Sony as such its the gamers they have hit the most.

Soldierone3025d ago

This would explain why Amazon went down the same week as PSN and all their host services were being checked and reworked for that week also.

Not blaming Amazon though as they are a quality company with quality customer service, something you dont see anywhere else.

andron3025d ago

That's not what Amazon have been saying though:

http://online.wsj.com/artic...

Quote from article: "Amazon said the primary outage occurred in a data center in northern Virginia when a configuration change to shift traffic was performed incorrectly. The network change was part of a normal upgrade and was intended to increase capacity of the primary network in the data center."

But if those behind the PSN hack actually rented Amazon cloud server space to launch an attack, they are pretty devious. I hope they get caught soon and put behind bars...
