What Microsoft Buying Skype May Mean for the Xbox

Technobuffalo: Yesterday, May 9th, 2011, it was confirmed that Microsoft purchased popular VoIP service Skype for $8.5 billion dollars. Billion, with a “b,” not million. While there are myriad options in front of the massive corporation concerning how Skype and its video conferencing services can be spread throughout the product line, I’m personally more interested in how the acquisition will affect the Xbox division of Microsoft.

i dont see skype being used much with kinects cameras for video chatting, the cameras (640x480 resolution) most phones are of better quality.

on the other hand, transmitting low quality pictures doesnt take much bandwidth so that would solve the bandwidth problem

I'm sure it will be a big windows 8 feature!

manumit2714d ago

I would rather them spending their money on an actual exclusive game.

SNEEKZ0NER2714d ago (Edited 2714d ago )

Skype? I wonder how much they're going to charge for this now.

thebudgetgamer2714d ago (Edited 2714d ago )

five dollars!

kreate2714d ago

increase XboxLive to 79.99 a year and add skype to it.

Sony, you really dropped the ball here.

Infernostew2714d ago

Dropped the ball? How? Anyone but MS would never pay 8.5bil for Skype.

5 bubbles too!?

Is there a secret N4G group of fanatics that made an oath to up bubble all pro-360 comments and de-bubble all neutral or pro-PS3 stuff.

I swear, there's a "Tea Party" of N4G that are changing the balance of bubbles.

Maybe it's in response to all the PS3 fanboy fanatics that were prevalent a few months ago?

minus bubbles for trolling tetsuhana

dragunrising2714d ago

Why bubble up anyone that makes such near sighted comments? There seems to be a lot of that on n4g and its not limited to any one group of fans. Also, don't feed the troll.

Sony and Microsoft are competitors in some industries and partner in others. They have completely different businesses.

Skype will NOT mysteriously disappear on the PSP or cease to exist on NGP. It makes absolutely no sense to limit a voip like Skype if you want it to succeed. Perhaps more resources may be directed toward Microsoft created ecosystems (Xbox, Windows etc) however it would be incredibly stupid for Microsoft to cut support on competing platforms.
