Sony PlayStation Network Hack Is Just The Beginning Of Giant Data Thefts: Experts

The breach ranks as one of the biggest in history, and its sheer scope raises questions with far-reaching implications, not just for the millions of people who play games or download movies on Sony's PlayStation Network but for anyone who's ever recorded personal information on the Internet.

it's a reality, US banks can care less(so can the rest of the institutions)about your money.
The level of security on your debit card is a joke and the amounts of ATM out there that are unregulated are staggering.
The programs out there to steal your data out number the ones to protect it.
The more we embrace this life of fat arse tech addiction and "online" gaming the more we loose our rights to be considered responsible citizens.
Responsible for pizza soda and online gaming all day.. lol
Give me arcade games and im happy.

andron5162d ago

Here in europe (Norway) I feel pretty secure anyways. More security options online are introduced all the time.

Weren't american banks supposed to switch to debit cards with chips? These are more secure, but the sheer cost have hindered the introduction in the US until now, since the banks are reluctant to pay for the upgraded infrastructure.

The PSN hacking is a wake up call about online security, and it will probably get worse in the following days.

One other thing people haven't really talked about, since it isn't directly gaming related, is the Amazon cloud service crash: http://www.cioupdate.com/fe...

Online security and cloud services will be a even bigger part of peoples lives in the future, so we should have these recent examples in mind in the future...

Tyre5162d ago

@Andron666 here in Europe? This is the INTERNET! it's global. Reading this article makes me think about the illusion that anything digital can be save, there is no such thing and if there was unhackable security...the ones protecting the data even abuse the data...we have to rethink what protection of data really means in this digital age...

andron5162d ago

I realize the net is global, and people should educate themselves and use common sense online. I say I feel secure online, but there are dangers.

What I meant is that when something goes wrong people for example in the US might have bigger trouble getting it fixed.

Also things like Verified By Visa:
http://www.visaeurope.com/e...

I think these kinds of extra layers of personal protection will be vital in the future for a secure online experience...

SwampCroc5162d ago (Edited 5162d ago )

Chips??? I hope you're not talking RFID Technology....

For instance... did you know on select Gillette products... there are little strips that contain "CHIPS"... they know what households has there product at all times...

Military ID cards... The CAC Chip... simple name change for RFID.....

call me a nut... but having everything on a "CHIP" would be very bad.... break one measley rule (like smoking pot) and boom you can't access any funds...

this is the Global ID system that there trying to implement on the society as we speak... Standard Global ID's regardless of where you live... with RFID Chips that contain all vital information including bank accounts, social security numbers and whatever else...
so like I said... if you break the rules... they shut you down...

oh no... I don't think you want a world like that.

gamingdroid5162d ago

In Norway it is standard to have that stupid Verified by Visa sh!t. I tried to order something for my mom last night, it wouldn't approve. So what did I do, I cancelled it.

Another time, I failed the Verified by Visa and the site accepted it!

That is the problem with security, it is a major pain in the @rse the more secure it is, and the less useful it becomes.

In the end, I think you should never store credit cards information (or other sensitive data) yourself unless you are willing to pour gobs and gobs of money hiring in the best experts to monitor it around the clock.

This Sony hack has nothing to do with data theft.
Credit card thief's don't hit the same source again and again.

This hacking is really only to hurt Sony, and nothing else.
A bunch of Geohotz supporters and a some other lowlife is doing this

andron5162d ago (Edited 5162d ago )

Of course the PSN hacking is data theft. Data were copied, you don't grade these things according the thieves intentions...

NatureOfLogic5162d ago (Edited 5162d ago )

so this is the beginning of what's been happening for years now? smh

xAlmostPro5162d ago

It's literally only a matter of time before a bank gets hacked to the extent everyone who uses that bank loses all their money..

Or government databases get hacked and people have things like national insurance numbers etc stolen..

TBH this PSN breach has been mild compared to hacks that have happend and hacks that will happen..

andron5162d ago

Yeah someone has been very close though:

if one more of these PSN articles appears I'm going to facedesk

Prototype5162d ago

I misread that and thought you said facebook

Reborn5162d ago

I've held myself back from commenting in these articles. But really now?

This is the same stuff, which just got approved few hours ago? Maybe worded differently, different author/website, but same stuff.

I'm pretty sure everyone is aware that this is probably just the beginning, and that they should embrace themselves for possibly more hack attempts.

Playdead co-founder slammed with lawsuit as bitter row with co-founder escalates

Playdead co-founder Dino Patti is allegedly being sued by his former studio and business partner.
Patti was threatened with a lawsuit earlier this year after he posted a now-deleted LinkedIn post that shared an "unauthorized" picture of co-founder Arnt Jensen and discussed some of Limbo's development. Patti said Jensen demanded a little over $73,000 in "suitable compensation and reimbursement," adding that he had "repeatedly" had such letters over the last nine years.

AMD CEO Shares Vision Behind Xbox Partnership and Next-Gen Chip Roadmap

AMD CEO Lisa Su talks about the Xbox AMD partnership, next-gen Ryzen + Radeon chips, and AI rendering tech coming to all Xbox devices.

AMD is really building hype around their unique partnership with Microsoft to help and build an advanced and seamless Xbox ecosystem across all Xbox consoles and devices.

I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimized chips" though? Seems ambitious.

Next year´s Xbox Showcase already looks promising and exciting. Here´s hoping they deliver.

InUrFoxHole5d ago

They had best show 3yrs in a row. Heading for another

VenomUK4d ago

Obscure_Observer said “I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimised chips" though? Seems ambitious.” To me, I interpret this to mean rather than having a couple of X/S products for launch and a handheld there is a longer term plan to release new products with higher specs at timed intervals. I’m speculating of course, but this could mean a spec bump every year or two, so that even if the PS6 or Steam Deck Home is released a year after ‘Xbox’ Microsoft can release an updated model that has a higher spec.

Agent754d ago

But Microsoft forgot the games.

KwietStorm_BLM4d ago

It's X3D chips for console. Everyone knows this. And it's been rumored in the PS6 forever.

Ganif4d ago

Correct.

"Sony's PlayStation 6 reportedly will feature an AMD semi-custom APU with a Zen 5 CPU and UDNA GPU, capable of 4K 120FPS and 8K 60FPS gaming. The console will include X3D cache and advanced AI upscaling technology."

I doubt that AMD´s CEO would waste her time making this huge and important partnership announcement over a tech that will be 7 years old by the those next gen consoles will be released.

Notellin4d ago

You should have just lead this comment with the fact that you have zero understanding of technology in the consoles and instead have a Toms Hardware online forum level of education.

Very interesting theory. Still not sure how MS would actually make it work.

KwietStorm_BLM4d ago

"I doubt that AMD´s CEO would waste her time making this huge and important partnership announcement over a tech that will be 7 years old by the those next gen consoles will be released."

How old is the tech in consoles? It's not a huge announcement. It's marketing and you know it is.

Obscure_Observer3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

"How old is the tech in consoles? It's not a huge announcement. It's marketing and you know it is."

Dude, what I know for certain is that a tech as old as X3D chips which is actually *older* than both PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, is hardly the reason behind this new partnership between AMD and MS to build new *custom silicon* for next generation of consoles.

And yes it´s a huge announcement since AMD is working closely with MS to co-develop custom SoC which will allow backwards compatibility across all MS´s next gen devices allowing seamless integration between devices and full backwards compatibility across all generations of Xbox consoles.

I also know is that this announcement don´t have anything to do with Playstation and their strategy with AMD for the PS6, so stop comparing the two pretending that you know what´s going on, because you clearly don´t.

If Sony is working on something remotely similar, that´s remain to be seen.

Fishy Fingers5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Some odd, deliberate wording, no branding, not 'Xbox consoles, Xbox handhelds' specifically, feels and sounds like they're building towards hardware that anyone can be used or licensed to/by themselves and other manufacturers.

Multiplatform software and hardware 'Xbox/AMD APU'.

Obscure_Observer5d ago

I guess you missed Sarah Bond´s next generation Xbox announcement this week, were she clearly states:

"I´m thrilled to share that we´ve established a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including, *our* next generation *Xbox consoles*."

But hey, I don´t think you´re entirely wrong, maybe MS will build their own Xbox consoles while licencing other manufactures to build and sell their own Xbox branded consoles. Who knows

Shares vision....we provide chips for money, this deal will sell many chips, we will make lots of money...good vision

Christopher5d ago

The marketing behind this is so heavy that I worry about the actual outcome. Why are they just not showing us the product, why all this talking in market speak?

Lightning775d ago

Probably because the next xbox isn't ready to release yet?

The marketing and rumors seem to be heavy out of no where. The rumor was a 27 release but it maybe it could be 26 new console launch instead.

Who knows.

Eonjay4d ago

There PR is alrways super heavy handed. No one is acutally buying an Xbox as is.
Also it is very early to be talking so much about a next gen console.

Obscure_Observer4d ago

There´s a lot of people interested on Xbox Next and its ability to run games from major stores like Steam.

We know that the PS6 is just around the corner as well, but so far, no news on what it might improve over the PS5 or PS5 Pro.

However, Sony already made public that their priority and actual focus is the PS6. So its not "very early" to talk about next gen when the very console manufactures are talking about it.
