Bitmob | Is Call of Duty doomed?

Now that Infinity Ward is a shadow of its former self and Activision is financially dependent on the success of the franchise, is Call of Duty doomed to failure?

Call Of Duty is not likely to be gone for awhile.

Call of Duty is really the only game Activison has going for it. But with big hit shooters coming out in 2011 alone, Homefront, Crysis 2, Battlefield 3. It shows that call of duty is showing it's age gameplay wise.

Most likely The next call of duty will be a big hit but just a few minor updates in gameplay. They have to start changing it up. Once they see that they are getting less sales i expect a major upgrade in Call of Duty.
I have not bought another call of duty since Mw2, with that said i did try out black ops with gamefly and it's just a new era, new guns, new killstreaks, nothing to get excited over.

well we cant say it cant fail, look at guitar hero sold millions, then they started releasing a bunch of them and then they oversaturated the market and then boom guitar hero bubble popped, So if activision isn't careful and releases a big mistake like black ops on ps3 kinda was. yes it could very well be doomed

Its always gonna sell loads. Still piggybacking off the success of COD4 (gameplay) and spending loads on advertising.

I'm hoping MW3 makes me feel like i did when i first played COD4, although i doubt it.

They should take the franchise into the near future, say 30 years, have different types of enemies, some different and cool guns/grenades, throw in more variety on the vehicles then Can the thing

It is not doomed... but they do need to give it a bit of a re-boot within 2 years!

They have a winning franchise on their hands, and are pretty much guaranteed high sales and success.... and yet they are just milking it. What they should be doing is using some of that money to build a really good game engine from the ground up, taking a few risks with all that wealth and pushing the game to be a truly top class FPS!

Look at Rockstar for example...
They could easily just sit back and milk GTA for all it's worth as it is a guaranteed seller and money maker.
But instead they have taken the longer term route to true success rather than milking the immediate success.
They have taken their profits, experience and fame/notoriety and used that to take chances on games that other devs couldn't/wouldn't make.

By making games like Red Dead Redemption and LA Noire they are keeping themselves fresh and interesting, increasing their skills, pushing gaming forward and giving us new experiences, and ensuring that their original money maker GTA stays relevant and when it comes out it is going to sell well and be well recieved!

Now if Activision took a similar route:
Invested heavily in a new games engine and aimed to make it as good as possible. Not only would they be able to continue with the high COD sales, but they could use that engine to diversify a bit as well.... so instead of having different companies pushing out a new COD every year... they could have one working on a COD every 3 years, one taking the success of Zombie Mode and make a top notch Zombie game out of the same engine, and look into other ways to utilise the engine as well!

COD would stay a fan favorite as it would be top quality and fresh, the Zombie one would do well and give them another revenue stream as well as gaining them the reputation like Rockstar of taking chances and pulling it off!

This year Call of Duty will tell if is still going to be relevant.

If they fix the whole system (perks,killstreaks,weapon balance,hit detection,etc) and add a new refreshing style to it i may be interested.

Yes its doomed, but it will still be popular for a few more years.

I think it's peaked in terms of sales, judging from everyone I know, they're starting to find it as more of the same and don't plan on buying anymore. They'll just play one of the copies they already have as the MP doesn't change much.

It's not that the game is bad, it's just that it comes out every year so it get's old twice as fast, there's no anticipation for it anymore.

Nope, the reason is because COD will always be the easiest game to pick up. As long as COD has Killstreaks, noob tubes and easy-to-use weapons and (relatively) small maps the game will continue to sell like hot cakes.

Everyone on here seems to hate COD inherently, but don't you guys realize that even though Battlefield and others are MUCH better made and supported games, COD just has it right. They're games are simple and easy to master, and those easy guns make it easier for newer players to get into the game.

Once Battlefield starts to adopt this formula, which I hope they have for BF3, I'm sure they're games will sell. But until then, COD is King
