FPS: Are FPS games overcrowding the games market?

In terms of sales and revenue, what’s the most successful game genre? Come on, what do you think? It has to First-Person Shooters and if you got that wrong, you are not a gamer. But are First-Person Shooters too successful? Are they overcrowding the games market and over-shadowing other games?

yes, it's only annoying because the FPS which do get released offer nothing different.

jeseth2818d ago

Agreed. They are scored highly but don't get the criticism for not really bringing anything new to the table.

I feel like COD and Battlefield should take 2 years between games and release new maps, weapon packs, player skins between games.

Same goes for Madden on that note.

Nate-Dog2818d ago

You do know that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was released 2 years after the original, and that BF3 which is scheduled to release this year is going to be released 6 years after the previous Battlefield game, right? Just saying, I know some shooters do release wayy too often and I wholeheartedly agree with Wizziokid, but (I feel at least) DICE bring something different to the table with Battlefield to most other FPS games out there now and they don't rush their releases either.

I have to say that the picture given to this article was totally misleading due to the fact that Electronic Arts are not the only ones bring FPS games to the industry hell they make a lot of other games (Sports)

But I agree that these FPS games are coming to often for us to handle. And as Wizziokid said they don't really offer anything new (Call of Duty).

firefoxprime2818d ago

Its not cool when 1 genre is the breadwinner for the whole freakin industry...

@Wizzokid & jeseth
Agreed with both of you.

Let's see...from 2006 until this days, there tons of FPS oversaturating the market with little upgrade than graphics

Unreal Tournament 3, Quake 4, Prey, Resistance 1,2,3, Halo 3, Halo Reach, CoD 4, CoD: MW 2, MW 3, CoD World At War, CoD Black Ops, Battlefield Bad Company 1, BFBC 2, Battlefield 3, Wolfenstein remake, Medal of Honor reboot, Killzone 1,2,3, Fear 1,2,3, Bulletstorm, Brothers In Arms, Crysis 2, etc2.

And from those titles i only find 2 games that really fresh and not some copycat from another FPS:
Mirror Edge and Bioshock 1

Ducky2818d ago (Edited 2818d ago )

I don't really agree with terming each game that has a first-person view as an FPS game.

In the past, the FPS genre was about being a meat-head with a gun and blasting through baddies. Nowadays, it is more about immersing the player by using a more personal view-point.

Portal and MirrorsEdge are classified as FPS games, yet they aren't exactly the same as Bioshock, which is much more different from a multiplayer-centic game like quake.
DeusEx (along with Fallout mentioned in the article) can be classified as an FPS, even though it also has a lot of RPG elements.

Military-shooters seem to be over-saturating the market due to publishers wanting a piece of Kotick's pie.
Shooters in general are over-crowding the market. =/

Nate-Dog2818d ago

You're saying that CoD4 is one of the games that doesn't offer anything different in the FPS market but you're forgetting that that's the game that really got the CoD train rolling (and indeed the FPS market) because it offered something that worked so well, that was so consistent and enjoyable, and that was different to what had been made previously. To say that Battlefield Bad Company and Battlefield offer nothing different to the rest you mentioned is also silly too since it offers the option of vehicle warfare which none of the others you mentioned do.

Valk2818d ago

Unreal offers vehicles and has for a while.

@ INception, Bioshock original? Never heard of system shock have you?

RankFTW2818d ago (Edited 2818d ago )

System Shock 2 is still the greatest game ever created.

Inception2818d ago

Well i don't say any first person view game = first person shooter right? just like Amnesia: The Dark Descent which is a survival horor game without shooting any monsters. And duh, i forgot to mention Portal.

No offense, can you describe what exactly CoD 4 did besides it got hollywood scenes and casual control?
Battlefield and BBFC are not diffrent. I played Battlefield 2 years ago and find nothing change so much in BBFC except graphic.

Can you read "from 2006?" in my post? :)

Ducky2818d ago (Edited 2818d ago )

^ What I meant by that is that FPS isn't exactly one little genre any more. You can't list games like Prey alongside Fear and Bulletstorm and use it as a reason to say that FPS games are over-saturating the market when their gameplay is quite different.

The saturation is stemming from military-based shooters rather than FPS games in general. That was my main argument (and wasn't exactly aimed against you, but rather a continuation of your own point, since your list mainly contained military-based shooters)

As for CoD4, it popularized an RPG~esque level up system in multiplayer.
Battlefield2 and the BadCompany series play differently. Destruction and prone have big impacts on how the game gets played.
Other than that, it's part of the same franchise, so similarities are expected.

i know it's a very big change, but i want more TPS games...

i thought the sales of GeoW would make more devs switch to TPSes but there are only a few good ones this gen...

Sabian1872818d ago

I love FPSs, especially the Call of Duty series, Battlefield series, and Halo series. I have even given Killzone a shake or two.
But...lately I have been feeling like I have been playing the same game over and over.
The COD series has been awesome, but you can't help but see that you have been playing the same damn game with new bells and the same dame whistle.
You occasionally see a game like Bioshock that throws some new stuff at you, but those are far a few between.
Brink is my next FPS and I have high hopes for it.
At least its different.

I think FPS games can overshadow the releases of some other awesome titles at times, which is a shame. Overcrowding the industry spotlight I guess!

OcelotRigz2818d ago

Completely agree.

I notice with my friends these days that most of them only play shooters, esp cod, and they dont even bother playing, or are even aware of, some of the other great games outside of that genre.

TomInc2818d ago

My housemate gave me the weirdest look when I said I was excited most for uncharted 3 this year. He then told me his was the new COD... Its not even announced yet! Talk about overshadowing..

rabidpancakeburglar2819d ago (Edited 2819d ago )

There's certainly a lot of them, it's the same with rpgs(although thats entirely bearable). I would like to see more adventure games in the uncharted mould but obviously different so that they are not just an uncharted clone

Tdmd2818d ago

If only...! Rpgs are becoming scarce in this generation. It's like seasons: the last one was the rpg season; now we're living in fps season. I wonder what will be next.

SolidStoner2818d ago

racing? :) forza, GT, NFS like .... lol.. noooooo... doubt it.

rabidpancakeburglar2818d ago (Edited 2818d ago )

Scarce? there is da2, the witcher 2, mass effect 3, deus ex and skyrim this year. those are just the big ones that I can remember

QuodEratDemonstrandm2818d ago

Sandbox.... next up is the season of the sandbox games. Infamous, Prototype, Assassin's Creed, Just Cause, and the one that started it all (I think) Grand Theft Auto. This genre has places to go and ideas to explore. And there's plenty of room for games to be wildly different. Not different like CoD and Battlefield, they're barely different at all. Different like Metal Gear Solid and Prince of Persia.

Tdmd2818d ago

Sorry, I reply in an impulse, thinking about the ps3 alone (which is my system of choice). Also, thinking about the present, not future. Take a moment to compare the genres on this system. When you've grown use to the last generation, it's hard to see the rpgs under sony' flag as abundant. Although I do agree that things are getting better and that 2011 seems to be a great year to rpg fans.

rabidpancakeburglar2818d ago

Yeah if your comparing the absurd amount of rpgs on the ps2 to the number on the ps3 then it will obviously look like there are very few but there is still a lot of them and they appear to be getting better

2late2818d ago

did this guy wake up from a coma? It's been so for a long, long time.

meetajhu2818d ago (Edited 2818d ago )

I love FPS pls do continue making them! I wish these sport games comes to an end so that everyone can go play the real sports instead of sitting in front of there console and playing it.

Baka-akaB2818d ago (Edited 2818d ago )

That's nonsense . By that silly logic (or lack of) Anybody can pick up paintball and airguns instead of playing crappy cod and clones . It's actually even cheaper .

Can anybody be a football , us football , basket etc manager , coach , recruiter , ,stratege , ordering around a whole team , overseeing everything while being a team member yourself ? Nope .

Not to mention some of the sports franchise , even while indeed milked , can sometimes features more changes than some fps .

Cod can't even muster the courage to at least upgrade its graphics ... while you can even , at the very least , expect that from a fifa .

Dont feed us bs about an unrelated genre , because you dont feel like defending yours on your own
