I do IT, computer science and multi media degree atm and yes u can track via IP infact its not even that hard, and why do people somehow think doing stuff trough a proxy server means they cant be detected? For instance the section of police im trying to join (digital detectives, track paedophiles etc online and find there address trough the ip address) use a software that just sees right thought the proxy servers, and a quick Google search shows u can track an IP address and 100’s of websites that u put the IP address in and it shows u where that person stays, and yeh I know IP addresses change all the time, if it’s changed before u can look then u have to phone up the ISP companies and get them that way as they keep a record of it

Then you should know all about ingress filtering and engress filtering and how proxys have little to do with this.

IPs can and have been spoofed here its very obvious, hackers are not dumb enough especailly on this level of hacking to use proxies.

The weakest link and what protect the hacker is the proxy. If you had enough information to translate the proxied ip to the real ip, you can track them.

However, this isn't trivial especially if the proxy doesn't keep logs and no other traffic relays keep them either.

However, there are far many "free" wifi hotspots like in Starbucks any malicious hacker can use and then it your only hope is somebody remembers/recognizes the person, there was a camera or if they bought something with a credit card.

Nothing on the internet is anonymous if you put in enough resources into it though... It's just if what you find is worthwile and useful.

Looks like a Mike had the same adress in 2007...

If you look at the log posted on all the pages about that Ip adress you will see that most of the lines end up with a return of HTTP 404 (File not found).
This is a smaller security leak but not the one that has caused all of this...

@XRider What sourav93 said. The proxy server stores your information. I'm no hacker but I suspect you need to find a way to access the internet itself without the providers knowledge. That way it would be much harder to trace. If you pay for internet they have your information. When you connect with that internet they know. The proxy server saves your IP and where you're going. They'll correlate that info to find you. I'm just guessing but it makes sense.

More then likely the hackers left someone elses ip in the log. Not difficult to mirror ip's and routing to get into a system. Your ip will never be seen. Don't imagine the movies where the heroes back track the ip to the hackers home.

If that IS the case then it is just a 14 year old not thinking straight. If it is anyone that actually hacks then they will not be revealing their own ip. Count on it.

I do not think all the CC details are on Sonys server.. only a small part of it.. i Believe your PS3 Stores all the data, so when you buy something.. it matches up with details Sony keeps on their side.

Remember when you 1st enter your CC details onto your PS3.. it goes through the process to verify that its real.. once verified i presume all the details are stored on your ps3 and only fragments of your card details are on Sonys side of things.

Throughout the whole thing User 2 (the brains of the operation) talks about how he doesnt do certain things because it will cause issues. Such as a PC PSN chat...wont build it because spammers. Wont release information lists because of spammers. Wont do a lot of things because of spammers. Everyone else is interested and wants to get information he has, but he avoids doing so. At least during this conversation they didn't actually do it just yet.

AND if they didnt do it, I want these guys on Sony's side. Helping them fix it, but also tracking down the people that did do it and turning them over. If they did that Anom will be on my side entirely.

I am not brilliant at/with computers by any means. Consoles are my thing (easier). But the attack on Sony by the writter of this story is pathetic. Just about anyything (if not everything) can be hacked nowerdays. Computers, security, cars, credit cards etc, etc. The list is now endless. I'm sure it took only a few weeks to crack the Xbox 360 to play coppied games. It's taken I think 5 years to get into the Sony device. A well done to Sony i'd say. I think they've handled this really well concidering the problem at hand. Shutting down the servers immediatley was the quickest and safeist way to handle things (I suppose they could have written a letter to over 70 million people individually, explaining what has happened........ come on ). This is oviously just my opinion, but I support the actions of Sony 100%. I like a console that is free to use, catch up with friends and get anhilated online in BBC2. You, I expect there to be problems along the way, ok, this is a big one but lets face it, in 3 months time, i'll be playing online, hopfully a little better than before and the last thing I'll be thinking about is what has happened this week. I don't know about you but i'll be lining up for the ps4 at some goddly hour of the morning. Keep up the great work, games and efforts Sony. Looking foreward to what's next......

Bottom line here...Sony tried to stop the custom firmware by removing the Other OS. They forced Geohot to stop hacking because they knew this would be possible. Sony did everything they could to prevent it but because a few idiots think ALL INFORMATION SHOULD BE FREE, PSN is down, credit card information was stolen, and people are steadily pirating PS3 games.

I dare anybody to try and sue Sony over this.

If Sony has really done this badly at security and the hackers have full access to all customer data this could be worse than a lot of people have thought. This could possibly be one of the biggest and most serious data breaches in history.

Just a few things.

The information that they are gathering is being obtained by what their PS3s are sending to Sony. Anyone who has ever done any basic networking knows how easy this information can be gathered.

1. Hook your playstation to hub (not a switch).
2. connect laptop to hub with WireShark or your favorite network sniffing tool
3. Profit.

At that point all you have to do is make a few simple transactions on the PSN store and you now have the exact information that these guys have.

And for those of you paying attention, if this was known in February, that means PSN has been compromised (from a client [meaning the ps3] perspective) for just under 2 months.

With custom firmwares now being distro'd in the wild like candy, how many of those are being developed for their intended use (which I do not support) of just playing backups? Or are they adding the playable backup feature to the custom firmware in order to, unwittingly to the end user, gain access to peoples personal information?

I love my PS3 and their is no doubt that it is an exceptional piece of hardware. But the software that was meant to run the PS3 and it's additional features (such as PSN) seems to be far from exceptional. So, while we can sit here and blame everyone under the sun for attacking PSN, please take a moment and ponder this:

These people that have this information may have only had this information since February. On the other side of the fence Sony has been allowing you, without your knowledge, to send your credit card and personal information over the internet for the past 6 years unencrypted.
