Apple Is Quickly Becoming a Major Player in The Games Industry [Macgasm]

Terry Lucy of Macgasm writes, "Many of us have iOS devices that we play games on. Several titles have shown that this is big business, most notably Rovio — the makers of Angry Birds — who just recently recieved a massive investment of $42 Million, big money for a console developer, let alone a ‘small’ outfit like Rovio.

Also, while iOS devices have a multitude of appealing features, a Google AdMob survey recently revealed that 84% of iPad owners primarily used the iPad for gaming. Apple also recently hired two top gaming PR executives from Nintendo. So the question is — is Apple on track to overtake major console manufacturers such as Sony and Microsoft as the king of the gaming world? And is Apple turning that world on its head?"

I approve this article just for the lulz. Who are these knobs that take gaming on iPad/iPod/iPhone as a serious gaming platform. Do people actually sit around for hours gaming on these things? The only good these games are for is when you are waiting in a line or on a bus..something like that.

just_looken4760d ago

beyond that is the fact all apple products are hugely overpriced.

@plb - playing while waiting for a bus, plane, subway etc. is almost all the time most adults have today for gaming. I definitely can't afford to spend hours on ANY day gaming.

There is no reason to look down on that. iPads, iPods (and other mobile gaming solutions) give these people an option as far as gaming is concerned. Apple saw this opportunity and decided to also target that market.

You just have to accept the fact that many people out there consider something like an iDevice to be their primary gaming platform.

I had the LaserActive... it was a nice collectors piece but not very practical. Especially when it came to needing recapping. I think i paid all of about $50 for the floor model from an incredible Universe back in the day. I ended up selling it many years later for $300 at the time due to it needing a new laser and the aforementioned recapping.

An honorable mention not on the list would be the VM Labs Nuon. It basically looked like any regular DVD player but it had ports on it for controllers to play specific games. one of which is still exclusive to it with Tempest 3000. It also offered nuon enhanced DVD movies with extra content not accessible by regular players.

Why Epic's Win Against Apple And Google Paves The Way For The Future Of Mobile Gaming

Epic Games winning its cases against both Apple and Google is shaping the way forward for the future of mobile gaming.

shinoff218343d ago

I feel alot of mobile gamers are kids which will at some point probably turn to console or pc. Mobile gaming just doesn't cut it for me.

AlterRecs42d ago

tru dat, but i feel like it's gonna be a lot more viable for people who travel a lot or don't want to invest in a full gaming rig. Think of it as a Switch on drugs, with a LOT more room for free illegal downloads.
