how many more? really? this is asked over and over =/ first it was okai to quesion it then it was ok to discuss it over and over but now its just getting sad =/
seems like rhetorical question or an assumption at best. If it's not a fad then I don't think it's here to stay for long, but the consumers are ultilamtely in charge of that - so we will have to see.
I mean when I saw SSBB, that's the first time I thought about Wii in regards to games. Where are the games to this thing and not the GameCube port Zelda.
Notice how nobody cares about the Wii, mention that Wii is gonna dominate this gen and no body cares. Mention that XBOX 360 will dominate over PS3 or vise versa and it starts a riot.
The Wii is not a real machine for gamers. I'm a gamer so it's a fad to me.
Wii = Gimmick XBOX 360 = Games PS3 = Games + Movies
It's good that it's reached such broad market appeal. But come on, if you're a gamer and you could only choose 1 console for the next 5 years. Would you make it the Wii?
As a gamer, sometimes I forget the Wii even exists. This site certainly doesn't remind me much of it either.

At this point I would.
For me:
Wii = 5 of the 7 games I own are fab. (The other two are ok) with 3-6 games that I'll have to buy in the next six months.
XBOX 360 = Nothing here I'm interested in. (Sorry, not a shooter enthusiast and the other offerings haven't interested me)
PS3 = Three games (1 is 6 months from release, the other two are TBA)that I would love to have. Otherwise there's not much interest currently. The ps3 is definitely more in line with what I like, however.
So in the next five years my story might change, but that's true of any of us. For now the wii makes the most sense.
As for the site not reminding you of the wii's existence... that's a result of the fanbase here. They are far from typical of the entire console owning population.
The Wii is nothing more then a glorified Vtech(Vsmiles) system. It should be marketed as one, and placed in the same category as other "Children's" toys.
Nintendo wants to appeal to the "casual gamers". Unfortunately for game developers and publishers "casual gamers" DON'T BUY GAMES. They are happy with 1 or 2 games a year. So what may seem like a low cost solution to making "easy money" will prove to be very costly.
The ONLY company making money off the Nintendo Wii, is Nintendo.
10 years from now people will say to themselves, "Damn, I can't believe I was suckered into paying $250.00 dollars for another Gamecube."
Or they might say "dang, I had as much fun with that little thing as I did with my $600 system. Why on earth did I buy that?"
See, we can all make groundless assertions. All this crap fails to take into account that the only thing that matters is whether the buyer has fun. I'm having fun. My in-laws and everyone I know with a wii is having fun.
So really, your take matters as much as all these anal-ysts. Not a bit. Only people's own view of their own consoles matter and that view only matters to themselves. Simple. If a console owner is happy then they are the only one that matters to their experience.
"The Wii is not a real machine for gamers. I'm a gamer so it's a fad to me.
Wii = Gimmick XBOX 360 = Games PS3 = Games + Movies "
This would be more believable: Wii = fun XBOX = Shooter PS3 = Games + Movies
PC = Games, movies, music, pictures, etc.
The Wii is not a gimmick, it is a real gaming machine, and it makes not excuses for it. It doesn't try to shove anything down your throat (like blue ray).
PC > BXOX, PS3 & Wii. Whatever you do on one of those consoles, you can do even better on a PC. The list now includes the wii because you can now use the wiimote with you PC if you have the know-how.
Depends on one's definition for how short something lasts in order to be considered a fad. In the grand scheme of things, videogaming may one day be considered a fad.
Look at baggy jeans... early nineties to present. Still a fad that's just beginning to fade. Of course it may always be active in urban culture, but that's no different from people who still use their Commodore 64's as desktops.
So yeah, if the wii is that kind of fad, it's trouble for competitors.
the direction Nintendo went with this console. I honestly believe it's a fad but it's already made Nintendo a small fortune. What will be Nintendo's next move? A Wii with Hi Def outputs and slighty better graphics chip that will be released 2010?
Hmm okay so I think the 360 is a fad due to it coming out a year early then the competition in order to get sales. I think the PS3 is a fad for BlueRay support to shine, and I think the Wii is a fad for trying to bring gaming to the noobs. All these gaming devices are nothing but toys and should be looked down upon.
Anyway this is a story based off of the article that has already been posted twice yesterday! Hurray for that.
lol squallsoft that was me mocking all these people saying Wii is crap and it's just a toy and any game that was previously found on another system is now ruined for going on the Wii. I don't believe anything I put on that post but ask your regular poster/fanatic here on N4G and they'll repeat any part of my first comment.
The same gamers who causally picked it up will casually put it down. Its a great console, but targeting the "casual gamer crowd" also has it's risks. Either way, I'm not a Nintendo hater, I love the competition they are injecting into the market and hope they keep it up.
I've played the Wii, and honestly I simply don't get the fascination. I think it's great that the "console" is drawing more people into gaming, but I don't see how it can last. The only thing I can see for the Wii, is that it's the first video game machine that non-gamers would consider "socially acceptable" in their circles.
THE WII IS A FAD, and we all know that. i have the wii and i hate it, but i keep it cause im a hardcore gamer. i have 3 games on the wii and they all are just average games and red steel sucks. i am glad to see that smash brother brawl comes out the same month as Killzone 2 and killzone 2 will crush it. the wii sucks and i most likely will never buy another game for the wii. wii fit sucks cause fat people are fat cause they dont excersize and they wont care about wii fit. these fcvk face at nintendo like shigeru miyamoto is a dumb head cause he keeps approving bullship. people could disagree with me all they want but who the fcuk would stop playing killzone 2 , drakes fortune, or fcvking ffx11 for mario galaxy. mario galaxy looks like a game for retards, i like the mario series but its been in a fcvk hole since mario sunshine. ohh yeah, the gamecube failed also and didnt do anything. i remember when the gamecube was selling more than ps2, i hated ps2 back then cause i was a narrow minded nintedno fan and gamecube never sold more than 30mill in 7 years when the ps2 surpassed it in sales and went on to sell 170mil. fcvk nintedno, ill buy their other nintendo hardware that comes out when they are in the gaming industry to compete and give me a system that is up to par with the rest out there. i would give my wii code but its longer than my social security and my cars vin number combined.
i have nothing against Nintendo as developers or as a company for that matter, but cmon. is this really the direction the public wants gaming to go? there are two truly next-gen systems out there. and both are pushing game-play to the next level, but there is something holding everything back. that something is the Nintendo wii. I'm not saying that the wii is a bad system, but its pumping out graphics on a ps2 level. is this what you all want "next-gen" to be? i mean the wii does have the motion sensing ability and all, but so does the ps3 (without sacrificing raw horsepower). as far as the whole "graphics aren't everything" argument goes, imagine if Nintendo didn't push the visual envelope when going from the NES to the SNES. imagine, if you will, that the SNES was marketed as a SLIGHTLY more powerful NES with a motion sensing controller? would gaming have continued to evolve as it has been doing over the past couple of generations? more than likely NO. don't get me wrong. i love the whole motion sensing thing. It is innovative and fun, but you're telling me that the control scheme is the only thing that should be evolving? it doesn't make sense. a next-gen system should be pushing the envelope in all areas, from controls to graphics. just like the SNES added the L and R buttons and also doubled the graphics power, the wii should be using its motion sensing controls and pushing graphics out on par with the PS3 and 360. the fact that the wii is doing so well means that developers are going to devote more and more time to it and less pushing the graphical envelope on the more powerful systems. lets just all pray that this is a fad and the "next-gen" gaming can really take off on the PS3 and 360 in the near future.
Sorry if any of my posts seem angry or terse. It just brings it out in me when people dismiss things as crap just because they don't like them. I don't care for the 360, but I certainly don't think it's crap. I don't care for shooters, but that doesn't mean they're crap. There's a lot more to being trash than clockspeed or pixels.
To answer your question. Of course gamers want graphics to improve. I look at even the prettiest graphics on consoles today and I'm impressed but I still find human beings rendered on the systems to be unsettling. Heavenly Sword is a beautiful game, but I find the characters to be ugly. It's precisely because they're getting closer but aren't there that I find them so.
Improved physics are another plus. We all want that. The problem is that every generation we have been way too focused on these aspects.
Control scheme has definitely needed some re-thinking. Entry into current games given the immense amount of buttons has been daunting for any non-technical user. Great games lead people through it, gradually adding buttons until someone does things by reflex. That's good design, but what could developers do if things were much more intuitive? They could go full-bore into games without making these "tutorial" levels. I believe that full immersion and enjoyment of games would come much sooner for a new user. Therefore, many more new gamers (with hardcore tendencies) would be born immediately. It's a matter of values. I believe Nintendo looked at what needed improvement most in order to change gaming and decided it wasn't graphics/physics. I agree. You may not, but I don't think anyone can't at least see their point.
Also they never lose money on consoles and never charge over $250. So what else could they do given all of this?
Reading all these comments makes me wonder if people really believe in these groups....non gamers, core gamers whatever.....games are games just like movies are movies. The target audience is where the difference will be.
If Wii is a fad and not a gaming console to you people then the PS3 and 360 aint gaming console either.
=/ gaming isnt what it used to be....people fight over consoles like their whole world depens on it.
hate the Wii you want, i hope it wins.....just so you people could burn inside with violent anger XD
Yes.. Bought one. and lent it out to everyone after one week. not a single person who as borrowed it for more than 2 days wants one anymore. I also lent my PS3 and 360 to about 10 people in turn. 2 bought PS3 just for BluRay and 5 bought xbox 360. Saying that.. one just brought it for the pokergame(!!)
wow you do realize you posted a link to the article this comment section stems off of right? It's the same article just different website. Snaps for you for lending out your systems though ^^ I could never do that cuz I have this belief that they'd break em somehow and try getting any amount of money back from your friends let alone 600 tops.
I got screw investing in the Gamecube I'm not about to make the same mistake twice. I just don't think Nintendo will do any better than they did with the Gamecube.
1. People like me who felt Nintendo didn't put enough the in the overall experience for the gamecube and expect us to purchase last generation tech for more than it is worth (I don't believe gamers are that naive - probably why Nintendo was shooting for a different type of gamer. Basically gamers that love to game but are ignorant of technology thus making money of the hardware from the start. )
2. Lack of pushing developers in their direction. It is like they focus on hardware the first 6 months then turn to their "own" games and screw the rest of the world.
3. Sure its possible that they gained some new casual gamers because of the controls but I don't think its adding to their customer base but replacing those who were disappointed with Nintendo during the Gamecube era and those nintendo gamers who have "Grown up"
Not a single PS3 game either, and one 360 game that apparently has already fallen from the top ten (that list is from Sept 23rd - Sept30th). The Japanese like their PSPs, DSs, and PS2s. While we're at it, lets mention that the Wii has 4 titles in the top 20 while the PS3 and 360 each have 1.
the wii will keep selling for at least 5 more years ,a precedent which Nintendo set years ago, and developers will keep making games for it months after the next Nint. console.
But it is still fun to play. I work up a sweat playing the boxing every night for about 30-45 minutes. By fad I really look at a system based on how much time I invest in actually playing it. Wii is cool but yes it is a fad because as I said I only play 30-45min a night.
360 I am playing for over an hour, maybe two. I am not as young as I once was so I do have other priorities but I game when I can. The wii is capable of much more considering it is in the same field as the original xbox. So that makes it better that GC and PS2 (technically) but they don't open it up for developers to express themselves.
Mii's are funny to make but I want some blood and gore on a console. There is nothing wrong with appealing to a broad range of people so long as you look at all the ranges that are available. The older crowd (seniors) like the wii and the younger crowd and mother's like the wii. What about that middle ground of teen-30 somethings that like the content of a PS2 games. Why can't nintendo appeal to that range?
If they are worried about their "friendly" image...most can remember when they took risks and had games with questionable content and those were the ones that sold well for their systems. Wii...a fad...it is headed in that direction unless the big N chooses to appeal to the market that is actually buying AND playing the games.
The main problem is that Wii gamers as a whole don't care enough about sales to go on and viciously defend their consoles, so when rabbid "xbots" or whatever the sony guys are called post anti-Wii articles there's not much stopping them. For example, we have here what is essentially a copy of yesterday's article. In fact, the entire point of this one is to link that one.
The Wii has some very good software coming out for it- I'm not sure what else needs to be said than that. Everyone who's being critical of Wii, in my experience, is just a fanboy. The only difference between hating the PS3/360 and hating the Wii is that the Wii has prided itself on being a totally new experience- when people play it and don't reach nirvana, they think that it hasn't lived up to Nintendo's promise.
i've gotten used to it a while back there really isn't any chance of changing the site's mentality unless the creators change the posting/contibuting rules
You know something??? These same fanboy's have been calling it a fad for almost a year now.....eeerrrmmmm smart. I'm gonna call it now, these same bozo's will be calling the "Wii" a fad next summer.

I got bored of wii Played about 4 games of wii bowling with friends and then got bored. :/
