Xbox 360 overtaken in Australia

Despite being the first next-generation console to market, the Xbox 360 has been relegated to third place in Australia.

Nintendo's Wii console rapidly overtook Xbox 360 sales following its launch in 2006, and now Sony's PlayStation 3 is opening up a significant lead according to new figures from market research firm Nielsen.

The Nielsen Australian Online Consumer Report 2011 found 58 per cent of online Australians now own a Wii console, while 29 per cent own a PlayStation 3 and 22 per cent own an Xbox 360.

I don't think the X360 has a exclusive for the first 6 months of 2011 (unless it's a XBLA game ???). X360 need more exclusives. PS3 will overtake the X360 in world sales sooner or later.

Question, and a serious one, are more people in Australia drawn to the PS3 because Blu-ray games are region free and it often can be cheaper to import games rather than buying them locally?

Good point, but I doubt its a significant reason. Alot of gamers probably dont even know that, or dont import anyway.

I only buy games on eBay when I'm willing to wait for them. Most that I want day one, I'll pay the extra.

Except this is another one of those bogus numbers, where they ignore the sales data that both Sony and Microsoft give as part of their quarterly SEC filings and resort to bogus techniques to get the count.

Lets just go ahead and ignore all of these and wait for actual IDG numbers, or better yet, the two companies SEC filings.

Fanboyism aside , if you have a 360 only and love games then this year of all years is the time to get a ps3 if you can set aside spare cash for 1 .

Variety...I think 360 this year will have plenty of unique variety from Kinect (many games not even shown yet)to core all the way to xbla. 360 has a different variety of games then on PS3 so by that I would agree. To sit up here and say 360 has none without looking at so many unique games over the years is just blind. the arrogance of PS3 fanboys is what makes it appear as though it's gaming community is nothing more than a bunch of snobby brats.

edit: Yeah I'm sure Codename d, Steel Battalion, Haunt, Star Wars kinect, Project draco, and Kingdoms are all imaginary games. You would think the clowns in every 360 thread know of there existence by now lmao.

Oh yeah? Are you forgetting the new PS3 Kinmove system they haven't shown yet? There are at least 300 games coming out for that (all 300 have yet to be shown). And I think that the Wii has 700 games for its upcoming HD version (games nor HD system have been shown or talked about yet, but it's safe to say that they're real right?).

i live in Australia, so ive got a few things to say about this:

1. this DOES NOT confirm that the PS3 has overtaken the 360 in sales here. it was a survey of less than 6000 people. from the article:

"which surveyed 5886 online Australians randomly stratified by age, gender and location"

in other words, its pointless.

2. Sony have given away at least 100 000 PS3s for FREE here with the purchase of Sony Bravia TVs and Vaio laptops. pretty much every single year of release they have done this promotion once or twice. for those that dont believe me, here are some links:

facts are facts. the PS3 is doing well, there is no need to accept anything. But as far as accurate sales figures, which is what this article should be about, for a country with this size population 150,000 is a lot of consoles.

and yes they did give them away, i have 3 mates who have PS3's for this very reason but they still all play 360 mainly. there are a lot of PS3's that are being used just as blu-ray/media players because it is unbeatable in this area.

just because fanboys disagree with every fact that goes against their obsession, doesn't mean they are right.

It was a survey of <6000 people. This may give an estimate , but it does not provide fact.
The only thing that would provide the fact would be if MS and Sony told us their numbers for Australia - but they do not.

1. did this article base their 'PS3 overtakes 360 in Australia' "fact" on a random survey of 6000 people?
2. which company, microsoft or sony, has sold more consoles in Australia according to their own press releases and figures?
3. did sony not give away 150k+ PS3s going by their own figures given in the links that i provided?

the answers are:
1. Yes, they did. they took a sample of 6000 and extrapolated that to a population of 20+ million. anyone who knows anything knows that thats a stupid thing to do.
2. Micrsoft have. the article even says as much (that the surveys findings are in direct contradiction to Sony/Microsofts official numbers).
3. yes, Sony certainly did give away 150k+ PS3s in Australia.

@lee_ten: i know the PS3 is doing well here - but it HAS NOT overtaken the 360 in Australia. this is 100% fact.

@stuna1: 1.this survey has NOTHING to do with what SONY count as sold - it was just based on how many people in the 6000 survey respondents have a PS3, 360 and wii.

2. E3 isnt in australia, so no, microsoft didnt give away any 360s that would affect this - remember, this article is about AUSTRALIA, not the USA or worldwide. Microsoft have NEVER given away 360s with any product in Australia. other companies do - LG was giving some away with TVs for a while. but thats not Microsoft. Sony were giving them away directly.
