Halo 3 remains top selling game in US; Xbox 360 sales still rising

VGChartz has just uploaded the new hard- and software sales for the week of September 30 - October 6. Not suprisingly, Halo 3 remains the top selling game in the US with an additional 562.000 copies in its second week, which brings its total to almost 3.2 million. Nintendo DS's biggest title of the year thus far, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, debuted on second place with almost 350.000 copies. Also, NBA 2K8 on the Xbox 360 outsold NBA Live 08 on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 2 with a debut of 116.000, compared to NBA Live's 102.000 on the Xbox 360. Microsofts exclusive title Project Gotham Racing 4 debuted with just 90.000 copies in its first week.

On the hardware side, the Halo 3 effect seems to still effect the Xbox 360 hardware sales as Xbox 360 hardware numbers jumped another 6% to almost 130.000. Nintendo DS was still the top selling hardware this week, despite a 5% decline to 135.000 copies. Nintendo Wii sales dropped 2% to 95.000 as Playstation 3 numbers remained at the same level with almost 30.000 units. Check out all this weeks numbers after the jump.

Europe is the second largest place for gaming and guess what Xbox 360 is doing great there as well.

If you look how many Xbox 360's have been sold and how many are continuing to be sold vs PS3's sold and number of games as well you can clearly see Microsoft has a huge lead.

Heavenly Sword is coming in at 79, so, it is no surprise it isn't drawing large numbers. Accoridng to MetaCritic Folklore (there next great "AAA" title) is getting a 74, while Blue Dragon got a 78 and Eternal Sonata got a 79. So, in reality their "AAA" titles are flopping. Which, I suppose, is no surprise.

Heavey advertisement does not nessecarily mean a great game.

I think it is obvious why the 360 is selling currently. The true test of the PS3 will be to se eif it survives long enough go get to the heart of its lineup of excluses before they either go Multiplatform or the PS3 gets so far behind that it will take awhile for it to catch up. I predict that if 360 plus Wii numbers get to 100 million combined before PS gets to 25 million that it is essentually nullifying PS3's market share by combining to effectively divide the market that PS2 used to dominate.

It is sad that Sony made the choices that they did with their hardware. I am not saying they are bad or good but it is obvious that the choices they made are not what the market wanted at this time by the sales numbers...

Japan went WILD for the Wii.. yes we know that Japan is always going to be a hostile market for the Xbox. It always will be.

USA... STRONG STRONG Xbox Market, But Wii has come to market with some great numbers. PS3 is selling but as the numbers show it is getting beat down. WHY? No games to sell consoles. Everything is coming in 2008 or whenever.

EU and Other.. Where PS3 is having at least a decent showing the 360 and Wii are still dividing the market.

The fanbois around here can talk all they want about Xbox 1.5 or 2 Gamecubes taped together but you know what. CURRENTLY as the market is the PS3 overestimated the market. Am I saying it sucks? NO, it was a risky gamble by Sony to begin with but when the XBOX NEXT does hit, the PS3 will not be the niced and most advanced console on the market and then what? Microsoft will take another loss on the 360 because the way it sits right now Sony cannot afford to release a new console they are LOCKED into the PS3, whereas, MS is already into the Xbox Next development. PS3 will have a longer lifecycle because of the fact that a year into the console their games are still a year away.

I hope Sony can gain more marketshare... Nintendo versus Microsoft in the next console generation does not sound good for gamers on the whole.

And honestly the main dettering factor is if you look at metacritics sort the PS3 list by game score there is only 2 games in the green that are not on the 360 (one of wich I have no interest Folkalore) so why bother.

Look at the sales gap that the NBA series on the 360 gave the PS3.All developers are looking at those figures with great interest and have slowly started redirecting their plans for 2008.You want an example : CAPCOM as of today just cancelled Monster hunter 3 for the PS3 and now its exclusive to the WII.stating that the cost of producing the game on the PS3 is to high,in order words they cant justify their expenses on the machine because it wont make a profit.

Microsoft is doing a great job with their competition, like it or not. Sales speak for themselves. It just seems to me they've outsmarted them almost at every step of the turn, and soon they'll be boxing them into a corner where they can drop the price all day, it still won't sell the PS3 without games. Gears is now over 3 mil in the US alone...pretty impressive.

Also seeing BioShock closing in on that 1 mil mark, though I thought that it would have been there by now. (Once everyone finishes buying Halo 3, expect sales to pick up when people realize how freakin' incredible BioShock is).

As for 360 sales...the Pro editions seem to be out of stock at most stores in my city and surrounding areas. Don't know if that's due to supply issues or sales, but there you go.

Wow. The 360 outsold the Wii for the third straight week. Thats impressive. Halo 3 sold another 500,000 copies in the US. I cant believe how many people bought NBA Live 2008. I played demos for both NBA 2K8 and NBA Live 2008, and NBA 2K8 was way better IMHO.

I am curious as to how the 40GB SKU will be received in the US. PS3 sales in the US are seriously lagging, I would have thought as we got closer to the holidays that sales would increase. Do you guys think maybe people are sitting on the fence waiting for the new $400.00 PS3 in the US, or is the 360 just that much more popular? The software sales for the 360 is ridiculous. Thats a serious attach rate.

Honestly, no fanboyism here, but the Ps3 isn't really popular wherever I go. It's viewed as mostly a waste of money ATM. Everyone looks at it and says, "Wow all those games are on 360" or "360 has Halo". All the people that have next gen consoles that I know personally are 360 owners, and last gen didn't own an Xbox, or were die-hard Sony lovers. Sony really turned a lot of people away with the Ps3. Consumers saw right through them.

One guy I know bought a Ps3. He has two games for it.

Honestly. The console really just isn't popular in the US like the Ps2 was. Right now the 360 is where it's at. I expect holiday sales numbers to reflect my opinion, or I'll eat my shoe.

The Final Fantay series has been mixed. Some have been great, some not so great.

The height was probably FF VII and Hironobu Sakaguchi is now doing games for the Xbox 360.

Famitsu gave Blue Dragon a 37/40 (although, mixed scores in total, 7.8 / 10 on Metacritic is still a solid B+ (I am enjoying it very much, im more a Western RPG player, but the art direction and story are great.. and the fighting system is the best I've ever played in a JRPG).

Lost Odessey is due in Dec. in Japan, Feb in EU / NA. And Cry-On hasnt been given a date yet (or much detail).

But the heart, soul and lifeblood of Final Fantasy (and arguably Square) has gone to exclusive Xbox 360 development.

Halo keeps doing this over and over, it's should be expected by now. Halo is just that record breaking title that makes whoever is attached to it rich. The game just may make in to the book of world records but some of you still refuse to see how powerfull this title realy is, mostly just jealous droids.

Sony should just go ahead and port their games over to the Wii and 360 if they want to make money, Hell their devs are probably starving "literally". Software sales.

The 360 is making a killing, I said some time ago "the Wii can sell as many consoles as they want, they are selling consoles to a demographic that doesn't buy games, they cant win that way".

This is clearly shown with the Wii selling 14k NBA LIVE games in week 1 vs 113k for the 360 in week 1. Developers see this and will not spend the Dev time on a product that will not produce sales to recover research & development costs.

The only games that sell for the Wii is Wii-mote & Wii-play and thats a trick because you need an extra controller & the other comes with the Wii, they count those as actual software sales.

If i were a dev company, and i see the 360 making what the other 2 guys are making combined(ish), i know where my games are going, especially when it costs even less money than making them for one of those guys.

I'm sorry, but Sony is screwed. I used to be a playstation gamer, still like my PSP, but i could see the writing on the wall, and when Sony sent me my PS3 introductory pack, i, right then and there, decided to pass..... I think lots of folk did/will.

btw, 400 bucks is still a lot of bank. Only reason i got a 360 was b/c i got one off ebay for 300,,, and it's still going strong....

GO 360!!! Maybe a couple years from now i'll get a PS3 if its 300 and is worth it,,,, but i'm starting to think it's too late for them to catch up... 5 or 6 million consoles BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS (in the states), is a lot to make up....

Wasnt that a folder with the glossy book showing ps3 and the games. Yea I think i got that also. I think all GAP and underground members did. No sony lost me with their 600 dollar price, and after awhile that blu ray thing really got under my skin. It looks like the focus is on getting blu-ray too be the dominant format for HD movies and THEN work on getting the games right, no im not going too be a part of that, im a gamer not a moviephile.

Anyone else notice Oblivion (360) sales at 27k? This is interesting - it's a game released a year and a half ago and it's currently selling more than two newly recently released Heavenly Sword (22k) and Warhawk (16k) that are both being hailed as AAA titles.

I guess you guys are right - 360 attach rate is huge compared to the other consoles. Up until recently you could argue that might have been partly due to the high cost of the PS3 means you have less cash left over for games in the first instance, but it looks like a continuing trend (and this theory doesn't apply to the Wii obviously).

Also Oblivion sales for the more recently released PS3 version aren't even on this chart!

you're really stretching it now. Why was Oblivion in the sales charts for the 360? Duh, they just released the GOTY edition on 360 that isn't even available til October 16th for PS3 owners. Nice try, but no cigar. Of all the good things in this article that MS fans can shout from the mountain top, you chose a 2 year old game with a facelift that should've been downloadable content, and not a new SKU on ANY system.
To the rest of the Xbox community, congratulations. Competition is always a good thing. It makes global conglomerations leaner, sleeker, meaner and actually refines their business philosophy and refocuses their attention on their consumer base. Sony became arrogant and as a PS3 owner, I'm glad MS gave them a bloody nose. And I know the majority of you hate Sony - but look at it this way; if not for them, MS would have never offered the extended warranty to quell the RROD issue. We are ALL benefitting from competition.

Oops I totally forgot about version being released - is this definitely the one in the chart? It's listed as just 'Oblivion' with over a million sales - either this is the original or maybe they're merging both versions.

That aside, I think it's still noteworthy that an updated old game is selling more than some of the PS3's newly released top titles. Sony players at least not yet aren't buying the higher rated 'must have' games in large numbers.

Well thats what Halo 3 did the week after it shattered all previous records.

Halo 3 has given a huge boost to xbox 360 console sales...which in return boosts game sales.

We all knew that the xbox 360 was selling more games than the ps3 and the wii combined.....

But what's new since the Halo 3 explosion is...NOW.....the xbox 360 is selling 2 times as many games as the Wii and the Ps3 combined. Unfreakingbelievable.....You add all ps3 game sales for last week...you then add all the Wii game sales....and you multiply that by 2....and you have the xbox 360 game sales for the week after the Halo 3 launch.....WOW....

Not just helped itself but seemed to have helped out the 1 year old title of Gears @ #24. With motorstorm sales also being counted with the free 80gb ps3. Who knows how many are them real sales compared to freebie sales. I am guessing 400k retail sales and 100k free 80gb sale.
The thing is this software will dictate the budget of the games and whether there are sequels to some or not; or future releases on certain platforms and this is something to think about. NBA 08 PS3 (not to be confused with NBA LIVE 08) sold 9k units in its 1st week of release. Beaten down by warrior orochi on PS2 on its third week, that
is sad. A game that runs at 60fps and has 1080p only sells 9k. Goes to show you that graphics or specs don't mean a thing on sales. Then you got Dirt PS3. Hasn't even cracked 75k in 1 month. I wonder how well Orange Box does on PS3 since I bet alot of hardcore sony fans never have played Half Life series.
