Valve Bets Big on its 'Orange Box': Maker of Half-Life series takes on 'Halo' with five-game package

MSNBC Reports: A video game company would need a truckload of chutzpah to release a first-person shooter in the wake of "Halo 3."

Such a company would have to be absolutely sure its game had enough fun and value to compete with arguably the biggest title of the holiday season, which launched to first-day sales of $170 million, according to its publisher Microsoft.

Valve, makers of the best-selling "Half-Life" series of PC shooters, is convinced its "Orange Box," launching on the PC, and for the first time, on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and is such a game.

Why do they always stack all Console game sales against PC sales, instead of looking at it as PC vs PS3, PC vs Xbox360, ect. When you compare PC gaming's 1 billion against every other consoles share of 4.8 billion, the comparison doesn't seem so one sided. Also as far as Valve not having a huge advertisement campaign for The Orange Box, why would they need to waste all that money? their IP is already one of the most recognized games on the PC, and possible the console market very soon.

this game is already known as a legendary game so i know i have nothing to worry about by buying the game, regardless of sales, because the game already sold alot when it 1st came out, and now theyre making even more money out of the game with exclusive still would have been cool if black mesa was included..i never beat the 1st half-life and i cant go back to that game after playing all these advanced fps's now...

this game, halo 3, mass effect + CoD4 should keep me busy till next years heavy hitters come out...GTA4, MGS4, GT5....cant wait

As you said, Half-Life will sell itself... No need for mega budget advertisement like some other game. Sheeeesh, they could have bought another country with that kind of budget. Or maybe make a totally new game. I still don't understand why you have to spend so much in advertising when your selling version 3 of a game. If the first two version were great, keep the money and invest it somewhere else... Maybe buy an island somewhere and send the top 100 shooters there for a mega paintball tournament : )
