Water effects=Killzone 3

Close combat=Crysis 2

Character Model=Crysis 2

Crysis 2>Killzone 3>Crysis

Thats my opinion by the way.

halocursed5146d ago

Killzone 3 all the way for me in terms of character model and close combat!

Army_of_Darkness5146d ago

I must honestly say that its the best looking FPS on consoles hands down!!

PLASTICA-MAN5146d ago (Edited 5146d ago )

WTF? Comparing water effects in... screenshots???
Did you know that Guerilla Games team dedicated 2 senior engineers working for more than 6 months just to develop these heavy waters effects and physics making them look accurate with all the floating pieces of ice and the heavy icy waves etc... Let alone the snow effects on the ground and how bodies and feet interacts with them and that aren't only static, lifeless cheaply and lazily 2D rendered photo-textures bumped with with a bugsfiest parralax illusionist tricks.

You try to educate those illeterates, try it on yourself first. Lamingbot.com

NewZealander5146d ago

i thought the killzone 3 characters looked better, but actually playing the game there was some things i didn't like about them, like the way eyelashes look horrible, so does that guys beard that you meet later in the game, when he talks his chin kinda pops through the hair, also the helgast fur collars kinda look fake, but overall they still look cooler then the crysis characters.

DualConsoleOwner5146d ago

not even a competition...

water is just a texture in Crysis 2 while KZ3 water actually has physics effect and what not.

PS360PCROCKS5146d ago

I play crysis 2 with "mods" on PC and kz3 looks better

Dee_915146d ago

screen does none of these games justice
you have to play in person
.. its like that with every game

crxss5146d ago

Sorry but the KZ3 WATER in those pictures just looks terrible compared to the rest. The character models for C2 and KZ3 both look great.

ABizzel15146d ago

As I've been saying, both games look amazing. It's all about preference. In my eyes they share the graphics crown on consoles.

yianni5146d ago

@PLASTICA-MAN
Should probably learn how to spell illiterate before calling others illeterate. Irony.

Dee_915146d ago

@crXss
have you ever seen the ocean in sub zero areas ?

Spydiggity5146d ago (Edited 5146d ago )

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

it's all scripted that's why you die the MOMENT you hit the water...cuz it's not really there...crysis 1 has amazing water...best in any game ever (til from dust comes out that is)

MaxXAttaxX5146d ago

You're only showing the environmental/background water on that level.

hesido5145d ago

@Spydiggity

LOL, "it's not really there"

How on earth can you say it's not really there? It's being rendered in realtime, the waves can have a pattern indeed, but it's there.

"it's all scripted that's why you die the MOMENT you hit the water"
I really wonder the twisted logic behind this statement. It's just that, you don't swim in KZ3. No reason in preparing an underwater shader.

evrfighter5145d ago (Edited 5145d ago )

looks like a 9 second loop to me >.>

thanks spy for exposing this obvious lol moment bubs dude. I would have found it myself had I played it but after buying that travesty that is kz2. No way I'm being suckered again.

awesomeperson5145d ago

@Spy

1. Nice way to draw views.

2. What the hell? Do I care, I never even noticed before I've seen that. When I played I thought it looked aweosme, I still do. Do I give one sh** about how its rendered? No. All I care is it looks good and plays on my screen, not trying to degrade a game.

Epicor5145d ago

@crxxs

I think that both crysis games have better water textures than KZ3 but I do think that KZ3 has better water physics (scripted or not). You can really feel the weight and the massiveness of the waves - the ocean feels alive and threatening.

Spydiggity5145d ago (Edited 5145d ago )

i wasn't trying to "draw views." i made this video for you people in response to these ridiculous crysis comparisons. i don't see how a person could possibly play the first crysis, see the water in that game, and think this is even close. there's an entire generation in between the two visually. i guess i'll be making a crysis vid next.

seriously though, you really think i care about views on a youtube profile i've used 3 times? come on now...that's such an immature way of dealing with this. if you really think i'm wrong, lets see some evidence... where's the counter proof? so far i only see one video... fanboys always love to say 2 things when you disagree with their biased opinion. 1) "you just want hits"; 2) "you didn't even play it."
well, i believe this video proves 2 wrong, and i think number 1 can be easily dismissed considering i don't get any money for my 10 minutes of total videos. especially not on a video that took me about 20 minutes to throw together.

Kleptic5145d ago

This seems like a pretty weird comparison...and imo uncharted 2 has better water than any of them...not just the way the water looks in a screen shot...but the way it looks in motion, and the way it 'wets' drake's/npc's clothes when they get in and out of it...

its the only engine I know of so far that has realistic currents...like rivers and things that still have dynamic reflections and still has layer manipulation...

that is where Killzone 3 (weirdly even more so than 2) falls pretty short water wise...shoot that gorgeous ocean...and nothing happens...your bullets just disappear into it...i've hated that since developers first started trying to make realistic water effects...

Killzone 2 at least had a realistic looking animation that would shoot a spike of water up from a bullet hitting it, even though it didn't have layer manipulation...and i'm not sure yet if there are other water effects in other parts of killzone 3...but that ocean level does not have any of these effects...its cool to look at for a few minutes, but it definitely seems a little shortcut'd...

in fact a lot of killzone 3's visuals feel that way to me...I spent the last weekend going through and playing more killzone 2...to finally platinum it before buying killzone 3 this month...and compared to the demo, I think killzone 2 actually looks better...the lighting in killzone 2 still seems unmatched...killzone 3 did away with muzzle flare lighting for assault rifles, but has it more than killzone 2 for heavy weapons (the jet pack MG will blow shadows all over everything, but the regular guns no longer do...)

I like killzone 3...but I don't like that it may try too much at one time...the 3D, the move support, appealing to people that couldn't handle killzone 2, etc...somewhere in there visually things got changed for some reason and I don't really understand why...its definitely not always better looking than killzone 2...

killzone 2 has better water than KZ3. Crysis 1(with mods) has the best water, close combat KZ3 is the best, character model crysis 2(PC)

Kahvipannu5146d ago (Edited 5146d ago )

Agreed on the water part.
This is Crysis 1 with mods, only 720p, and DX10, would love to see what DX11 could do.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

I don't still get it why some people think KZ3 has better graphics technically. It looks amazing, but is still "just" pipelined scripted shooter, with low interactivity with environment, as tecnical point of view. Artisticstyle is other thing. It's beautiful game indeed, but not inpar with Crysis1 or 2 technically.

MaxXAttaxX5146d ago

I think I might just agree with what you said.
Although I think KZ3 did a better job with the dynamic water(the interactive parts) you can walk though.

That pic they showed was more of an environmental/background water.

Nah I'd say Character models goes to Killzone 3 tbh

downwardspiral5146d ago

These are in game comparison of the character models. I think the killzone model look more realistic.

meetajhu5146d ago

Crysis 1 will demolish every game till todays date. Only game which will dethrone Crysis is Rage

ThanatosDMC5146d ago

Exactly. Crysis 2 is a step down Crysis 1. People forget how insanely good looking Crysis 1 is. Check out the youtube hd videos.

BK-2015146d ago

Crysis 1 looks better then both because its a PC game but KZ3 looks and preforms much better than C2 on consoles.

zootang5146d ago

KZ3 Mawlr is the most intense gaming experience I have ever had. The game surpassed my expectations and they were set high.

DoomeDx5146d ago

My expectations were quite low. But after playing it i changed my mind. It is indeed one of the best games ever

(Playing games since Wolfenstein 3D!)

NewZealander5146d ago

yeah my expectations for KZ3 were low too, i wasn't a fan of KZ2 but decided to give the third a go, graphics for the most part were pretty good, but some areas did look pretty rough, it was also far too short and the story was weak, unless you like multiplayer i would suggest renting it, those who like online will probably get more out of it.

Fat Bastard5146d ago

Crysis 2 was very disappointing for me. I played it on PS3 and 360, and both versions didn't perform as well as I had hoped. Months of Crysis 2 gameplay videos got me very excited but the title underperformed for me. The graphics are definitely spectacular, but the characters don't control as well as I would like, and it isn't as smooth and enjoyable to shoot/play (shooting enemies isn't as satisfying for some reason). I am much happier with Killzone 3 as far as gameplay and multiplayer. As far as visuals, I would give KZ3 the slight edge but both look great visually. I will say KZ3's story had lots of corny and stupid parts, so I'd give the SP to Crysis 2 even though I didn't enjoy it that much.

fooltheman5145d ago

I actually like the story though...
In essence there is't much room for making it into a deep story...it's war...
I really like the background story about those two helghan 'warlords'.

Whoever expected a high standard roman ...

STONEY45146d ago

That's a terrible picture being used for Crysis 1. THIS is what it looks like.

http://www.pcgames.de/scree...

NanoSoldier5146d ago

Honestly, anyone who thinks that Killzone 3 is technically ahead of Crysis 2 needs to get his eyes checked.

Last night I was watching the rain falling down in Crysis 2 for minutes, it's a incredible step from Crytek that they achieved something like that on consoles.

cooperdnizzle5146d ago

You are a fan boy, Have you even played Killzone 3, i have crysis for the ps3 and pc. It looks pretty bad on consoles, but on the pc it looks really good!

talltony5146d ago

Nano soldier
Give me your psn id and prove me that you have played both games because alot of people like to throw out crap like you just said all the time.

Oh BTW the environments and textures are nowhere near as detailed as killzone 3's so I think you need to get your eyes checked.

lee_ten5146d ago

...and your name is nanosoldier. okay, sure.

RememberThe3575146d ago

Um do you know that "realtime" means? I think you mean "dynamically". And no the water isn't rendered dynamically. But that water is doing a lot more than just sitting there and shimmering. With all that KZ3 has going on there is no way they'd have the resources to run that water dynamically. But show me an other game that has waves that look that good.

DrHouse5146d ago

Most of Killzone is pre-rendered, only on N4G will you see ppl say its realtime, Even the snow in Killzone is only in the camera, its not all over the area as it would seem.

Darkfocus5146d ago

that's still realtime as it's being rendered in 3D by the hardware itself it's just not dynamic and its scripted...also I really don't see why some people in this thread are saying it looks better than crysis though...clearly they've not seen crysis in motion.

awesomeperson5145d ago

...

As I said before. Do I care if how the hell the game delivers it to me? Does it hurt me knowing a game isn't rendered a particular way?

No.

When I play the level it looks awesome, it still looks awesome. End. Of. Story.

Jazz41085145d ago

Kz2 I enjoyed somewhat so I picked up kz3. My psn and live acounts are both jazz4108. Kz3 imo has to be the most overated and most boring corridor shooter I played in a long time. I don't play online so I play the sp campaigns but kz3 tooke me sinch launch to finally finish it as I could not play it for long as it was so underwhelming. Crysis2 I started it and could not put it down and the large levels and the fact the gameworld is open to explore and packed full of destructable enviroments make the cryengine 3 unmatched on consoles imo and the story in crysis 2 was much better written by a famous author and the campaign gave me around 11 hours of play where kz3 was half that and to think crysis did this on the 360 with a dvd9 is just incredible. Give props where there due and crysis2 for the win imo.

WOW 6 months......and still it pales in comparison to Bioshocks water effects.

FACTUAL evidence5146d ago

Wooooooow! No freakin BIAS here! I asked my granma which one she thinks looks better and she pointed to killzone 3 I shit u not!

Jezuz5146d ago

Don't you know everything must cater to KZ3 or else the fanboys will disagree with you?

TVippy5146d ago

Very ignorant opinion, man.

starchild5145d ago

Some people are really blind it seems. The water in Crysis 2 looks far better than the water in Killzone 3.

The movement of the waves looks kind of cool in that scene in Killzone 3, but when I shoot the water there isn't any kind of splash or ripples left by the bullet impacts. In Crysis 2 the water ripples and splashes in a realistic way when you shoot it.

On top of that the actual way the water looks is better in Crysis 2 as well. It has the right amount of reflectivity and specular highlights, whereas the water looks very flat in Killzone 3.

The movement of the waves isn't all that impressive either. I mean it looks pretty cool overall, but it's not bar-raising in any way. Very nice looking waves have been done in other games before. Check out the waves in this old Xbox 360 game, Far Cry Instincts, at around 0:29 in the following video http://www.youtube.com/watc... The movement and graphical quality of those waves looks better than that which is found in Killzone 3.

Crysis 2 on PC looks far better than Killzone 3 and anybody that says otherwise needs to go in for an eye exam. Even on consoles I think Crysis 2 looks better.

KZ 3's water effects in motion, I couldn't help but jump into the ocean, a couple of times, it was so so amazing. Overall, aswell, Killzone 3 looks far better in motion than consolified Crysis 2

AngryHippo5146d ago

RememberThe3575146d ago

I did too but it wasn't on purpose :(

awesomeperson5145d ago

Stupid Akmir Snowdrift when I first started playing *runs out to protect battery* *fallen_dawn has commited suicide*

ksoto5146d ago

Seriously i jumped in the water a few times too lol and the snow effects are awesome too kz3 has so many things going on and beautiful graphics u really cant compare Crysis 2 to it i dnt understand how ppl even take that comparison seriously. Dont get me wrong i own crysis 2 and play the mp alot bcus it is fun but in my opinion it doesnt compare graphically to Crysis 2.

BlackKnight5146d ago (Edited 5146d ago )

Actually KZ3 water in motion looks pretty lame at certain times. The tip of waves are incredibly low poly count and look like triangles poking out. It's actually just an animation, or "script" as Grenadan said but scripting is actually more complex that a looping animation.

The low poly count is pretty noticeable. And the fact that people talk about the "physics" like how the icebergs are floating around is just sad. It is just an animation, no physics, the icebergs are just an animation, nothing else.

I wouldn't say the water is HORRIBLE as this video says, but it is one of the few RETAIL, not beta, videos of the water waves in KZ3 that shows this loop (and pokey waves, watch in HD):

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

BK-2015146d ago (Edited 5146d ago )

Check out the pools in Kaznan jungle, there are dynamic water effects. Its just hard to find but I'm guessing it was a design choice not to include too much water in the game.

Edit: the guy who posted this video is an idiotic fanboy.

BlackKnight5146d ago (Edited 5146d ago )

@BK-201

I know what you are talking about. It's pretty similar to Crysis 2 water interaction.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

He may be an idiotic fanboy (which I warned by saying I didn't agree with his comments) but it DOES loop and is just an animation and not physics at all. I just used the video because it is the best quality video of the retail copy of KZ3 showing the water waves.

DrHouse5146d ago

When did you jump in what did you see? DiD YOU SWIM AROUND? no? why not? maybe cause its pre-rendered visual trickery?

BrianG5146d ago (Edited 5146d ago )

If it looks better, but is pre-rendered, then whats the point in not pre-rendering it?

Not everything has to be all real time all the time, like the Cryengine 3 does. That my friend leads to inconsistent results (objects morphing in screen (trees for ex) and pop in) and variable framerates. Unless that was the developers issue and not the engines. And lets not blame hardware either because other developers are doing great things.

Are we going to start rendering clouds in real time for our FPS games? Or maybe the stars behind the clouds that we can't see or interact with but exist anyways.

hesido5145d ago

The water is not pre-rendered. The *pattern of the waves* can be pre-prendered. But the water surface is an actual 3d object. You can look at it from every angle. You cannot pre-render that.

awesomeperson5145d ago

Ah K, because I'm sure even if it did let you swim around you would really want to swim in ice cold weather, been gunned down on an alien planet with heavy equipment. Right?

DelbertGrady5146d ago (Edited 5146d ago )

The Killzone 3 character model screenshot is taken from a cutscene.

one2thr5146d ago (Edited 5146d ago )

nope, the cutscenes in killzone are actually, simple recorded videos of the games REAL TIME engine, that gives the game time to load without leaving gamers, having to watch a "pre-rendered cutscene AND then have to wait for the actual game to load..... And so far all the games that does this are great games, such as: God of War 3, Killzone 3, and Uncharted 2.....
So yeah, that pre-rendered statement about Killzone screen shots are irrelevent sir, good day

BlackKnight5146d ago

@one2thr

The pre-rendered cutscenes do use the KZ3 engine. However, they bump up the character models and texture resolution alot higher since it is....PRE-RENDERED. Meaning they don't have to worry if it's 30FPS in real-time because when you pre-render, you always get your target framerate, it just takes time to spit out the video.

So it does not represent real time since if the PS3 actually had to render it in real-time, it would have framerate way below 30 FPS.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

bluwulf5146d ago (Edited 5146d ago )

BlackKnight,

The models are the same, as are the textures. They up the levels of Anti-Aliasing. Its the same across the board from Uncharted/MGS4/Killzone etc.. The Intro videos are what you're thinking about.

Those have increased model polycount.

Unlike Gears/Halo/Alan Wake etc. The PS3 actually has the ability to use its game models in the cut scenes, because the engines are able to run the high polygon characters.

Its not a significant jump in polygonal count of the characters, pre-rendering is taxing on Anti-Aliasin/Motion Blur etc.

There may be a slight increase in quality, but its not as night and day as other titles.

BlackKnight5146d ago (Edited 5146d ago )

@bluwulf

I will gladly show you comparisons straight from my PS3. Just ordered component cables yesterday so I can record in HD once I get those suckers. Sony/PS3 blocks you from recording on HDMI no matter what is being shown while MS/Xbox only blocks when watching netflix or a DVD or anything like that, games can still be recorded from HDMI in clean digital HD. Super annoying. And I am not about to go buying blackmarket HDMI-HDCP recording hardware or expensive workarounds( http://jarkhd.blogspot.com/...

Anyhow, in-game character models are noticeably lower quality in gameplay than in cutscenes and Uncharted 2 is a great example. I didn't even bring up xbox in my previous post and you are acting like I did. Psst, your fanboyism is showing. Try not down talking platforms you don't own (or hate due to "loyalty") and just speak the facts. Devs do it on ALL platforms.

Crytek Wanted Crysis To Be "Future-Proof"

According to Crytek CEO Cervat Yerli, "I want[ed] to make sure Crysis does not age, that [it] is future proofed, meaning that if I played it three years from now, it should look better than today." Yerli and the team designed Crysis' highest graphical settings for the PC hardware of 2010 and beyond.

While Crytek has officially announced Crysis 4 is in development, nothing new has surfaced. For now, gamers' only way to scratch that itch is to play the Crysis Remastered Trilogy available on PC and consoles.

I mean the lighting and physics still hold up extremely well. I still revisit it from time to time.

RedDeadLB102d ago

That CPU performance thing is preventing it.

isarai101d ago

Yeah unfortunately Crystek's decision to bet on the linear progression of clock speed in CPUs was derailed by the unforseen shift towards multicore CPUs. It just wasn't built with that in mind because that wasn't even in the conversation at the moment

DivineHand125102d ago

I remember when I tried to play Crysis with my Intel Pentium Dual core E2200 @2.2GHz , 4GB ram and GeForce 9400gt. I was a kid back then and that was the best I could do. I would get about 15 to 20 fps. When I over clocked the CPU to 2.8GHz I would get about 40fps. The experience wasn't good at all and it was the only PC game I could not run back then unless and put the settings on low. At that point the game went from cutting edge graphics to PS2 graphics. To this day I haven't completed the OG Crysis. I was able to complete Crysis 2 and 3 after building a new PC when I got my first job.

HyperMoused102d ago

Never played it, worth a try you think?

Profchaos101d ago (Edited 101d ago )

Worth a try just because it's the only game that lets you pick up a turtle on the beach and throw it at enemy soldiers that should have been a back of the box feature.

But nah seriously unless you're nostalgic for it I'm not sure if it will hold up

Still wish game development was overall this passionate and minutious about their projects. Obviously, there are still some great studios as exceptions.

LikAChicken114d ago

I’ll never forget Far Cry 2 and the amount of details they packed in.

Yea there were some issues with the gameplay loop and the sickness aspect but you could tell they really tried to nail details.

DivineHand125114d ago

I haven't beaten the first Crysis but I did play Crysis 2 and Crysis 3. I know some PC players were annoyed by the last 2 games being developed with consoles in mind but I believe it was an improvement. I had a great time with Crysis 3 to the point where I believe it was too short.
