Xbox 360 secrets: After Falcon SKU comes Jasper SKU

In this article, Mercury News writes:

"Microsoft didn't want you to know about Falcon, and it certainly doesn't want you to know about its successor Jasper. But that's another secret we have to unveil.

Jasper is the code name for the next motherboard for the Xbox 360. It will becoming next August, in time for next year's holiday season. Jasper is going to have a 65-nanometer graphics chip from ATI Technologies, as well as smaller memory chips. That isn't much information, but it's enough to tell us about their cost-reduction plan. If you ask me, it's a bit of a slow pace.

I don't know why it will take Microsoft essentially three years to cost reduce the size of the graphics chip through a manufacturing shrink... Microsoft has had to divert a lot of engineers to debugging problems with Xbox 360 reliability. Even so, you would think that they would have moved faster, since the move to 65-nm graphics chip will likely be one of the best things they can do to improve the reliability."

I was gonna buy one in February...I suppose I still can.

Does anyone know how well the Falcon units have been working thus far?

Every Xbox 360 has had its head issues fixed. New motherboards, fewer components, smaller components, new layout, and a new CPU/GPU mounting methodology.

Look at this: http://www.mainstageclothin...

"Having identified a number of factors which can cause general hardware failures indicated by three red flashing lights on the console, Microsoft has made improvements to the console and is enhancing its Xbox 360 warranty policy for existing and new customers."

Also, read this loud and clear; Microsoft said at the Tokyo Game Show:

"We have made all the improvements in our manufacturing process, All the consoles on the market have those improvements.

If MS has a "jasper" lined up, it will be just another nail in PS3's coffin.

Buy a worry-free Xbox 360 on the shelf anywhere. And you'll actually be able to play the best games of the last 20 months!

I've been waiting on Bioshock since I first saw a preview, and Mass Effect looks pretty good too.

is pretty much history, the reason the new 360s are all being made with HDMI built in is because they all have the new motherboards with the new seating, heatsink and compound for the cpu/gpu. This mobo has HDMI built in, it is cheaper for M$ to use just one mobo, as apposed to some with HDMI and some without. Notice on the xbox forums you see hardly any rrod complaints anymore, this issue is almost dead. I would say it is safe to buy any 360 at this point.

Not even the Halo special edition have them, so no one can say

Upgraded parts in consoles doesn't mean they are new SKU's.

My Buddy has two prems with different drives one is better but they are the same SKU. Consumers can not choose to buy a 360 with an Ben&Q drive vs another.

Will this finally be the stable XBOX360, 3 years after release?
