Analyst: LittleBigPlanet to sell a lot of PS3 hardware

Analyst Michael Pachter believes Sony's LittleBigPlanet will do well to move PS3 hardware upon the game's release early next year.

"I can't say enough positive things about Little Big Planet," Pachter told Gamasutra. "There were looks of delight on the faces of the people playing it and people watching it in Tokyo. It looks like a genre-defining game [with] the potential to move consoles."

I disagree. I am 25 and think this will be fun as hell. As do most of my friends. Just cause something is cartoony doesn't mean its "Kids only" Try reading an adult comic(i.e. Anything by Frank Miller or Neil Gaiman) or watching an anime or even movies that are kind of cartoony(Family guy, Final Fantasy, Starwars!!!1!) They are for everyone who thinks its cute. Why do college girls have teddy bears all over their rooms?

Look I think basically its artistic. Creativity meets online gameplay meets something that is appealing to eveyone visually. Would you like it if they had made the game with body parts and gore? This game is made this way so it can appeal to a mass market. All of japan will like it and its a game that Mom and daughter can play together and even enjoy it... Along with someone like me. Its good stuff and made for everyone. Just cause something is cartoony (Team Fortress, Halo) doesn't mean its for kids.

I'm more excited for this than I am home. If I'm going to chat with PSN friends I'd rather do it building some random contraption in LBP, than do it standing around in Home. (Although Homes pool tables 'n' such should provide some entertainment.)

It's cute rag dolls frolicking about in a 2D side-scrolling world. That music is good for about 2 minutes, and then I want to shoot myself. I hope they have other tunes.

Will you say the game sucks when you see Mario Bros levels on there? A Halo Side-Scroller? Limitless possibilities and when people get creative, I'll use Garry's Mod, Forge, and Starcraft's Use Map Settings games as proof to show people are geniuses and create the best games.

I expect the community to be making some sick maps for this game in due time.

and even thou it won't be a day one purchase to me i will get it eventually.. there is a single person campaign with bosses, and it will be easier to accomplish with coop, up to 4 people, of course everyone knows you can make your own levels and then other people download them later,

and that's what gives it a replay value, you're gonna be able to get in the game a couple of weeks after you left it, and be able to download more levels.. dozens of levels uploaded everyweek should keep things interesting..

and the idea of building levels with other people it's also appealing.. i'm 27 and even thou that game seems kiddish aren't video games kiddish?? the bottom line is that if you have fun with a game, that makes it a good game for you

Although LBP is a neat concept, it looks like minimal fun. There is no structure, it has more in common with a dev tool than a game.

The analyst only had to watch the GDC reveal (and the response it got) on this and he, like every other game related commentator and professional, came to this same conclusion. Its amazing.

Just wait and see what people will come up with... This game is going to be amazing, and has the potential for some very creative level creation by the PSN community.

This has a real chance of being a BIG hit with casual gamers, and with the $399.99 40GB PS3 coming up soon this has a real chance of taking off.

First Day Purchase.

People say it looks kiddy, but what's kiddy about creating your own maps and levels.

When you get this game, you won't need a 2d side scrolling game ever again. You can fully customize the way the levels look, the music, you can make your character look however you want. Sure they put flowers on the characters and all that, but if you really want to, you can design armor and a helmet for your little guy if that's what tickles your fancy.

Every facet of the game is customizable, I don't understand how someone can point and just say "That sucks"

While I don't think this is a system seller, I think this game will do well on it's own. I can't wait to create my own levels and import images and my own created textures. You get to create enimies and everything. Bringing out the creativity in us all. While this isn't everyone's cup of tea, I'm sure plenty of people will get a kick out of this game.

Can't deny that this game will be sweet. I mean, if they give people the ability to have unlimited creativity, then the game will be a hit. As long as the interface doesn't suck and make it a pain in the ass to do anything.

But I haven't really been following the game so I don't know how it's coming along.

All I know is that creativity+tools = unlimited fun.

<ed.> As for the whole moving console thing. I kinda doubt it'll move a lot of hardware. A game has to have mainstream appeal for that. And I doubt a game where YOU have to do all the work to make something happen will appeal to the mass market.

Ok maybe a few people will spend $500 or more for the PS3 for this game. Lets be honest this is not a system mover. Halo3? GTA? Now these games make people plunk down their hard earned cash. Heavenly Sword, Warhawk and Lair were supposed to be system sellers also and they have turned out to sell less than some Xbox live arcade games. Just a thought!~

Sorry to correct you but by the time this game comes out the PS3 wil be $399 and will have Home as well as Dualshock 3 so Sonys gamebar will be raised and should also have a much larger userbase by then.

I showed my friend this video who wanted a Wii and had no intentions of getting a ps3. After he saw LBP and Home he sounded so excited to get a ps3. You don't have to like this game but if you think it's a flop your crazy.

I agree I dont think this game alone will move consoles. I however think it will be another nice little push for people who are on edge about buying a PS3. When someone is on the edge of the cliff to buy one and they go to their friends house and play it... I think it may be the final step towards jumping in... I think thats pretty realistic.

The success of this titles is to the assumption that people will spend 2-3 hours designing a level... so, they can play it with their friends.... and that it's not get old...
Character customization is also great... but eventually get's old and seem to maintain interest only on MMO games...

System seller? I don't know about that... I have a hard time seing the PS3 and the xbox 360 as casual kids consoles just because one or 2 games are release for them. I'm not underminding this game.. on any way... just that I think that it's target audience is somewhere else.

I'm not trying to start anything.. and the wii is not my console of choice... but this game would really fit well as a wii game. It would probably sell 10 times more and it would probably be more of a system seller on the wii than on a console as hard core as the PS3.

I know Sony fans will not be honest about this title or any title on the PS3... but come on... if you were to pick between this game and Metal Gear or Kill Zone 2... would this be the system seller?

I'm not a MGS fan for me it would be a tie between KZ2 and this with MGS in 3rd. Seriously. Its the kind of gamer I am.

MGS to me looks great graphically. I feel it will do the same as the last 2 and be a series of cut scenes with very little gameplay. Also I hate the color scheeme. Everything looks grey and green... Not appealing to me. KZ2 is kinda the same color wise but everything else looks amazing hands down.

KZ2 and LBP look both extremely innovative and new and fresh. To me they are both day 1 purchases and I feel will be extremely popular and fun.

At my age, I consider myself to be more of the hardcore gamer. And littlebigplanet does have that Kids image to it. Which is why I intitally passed up on considering purchase for this game. And if I saw Killzone, MGS, GTAIV etc., I would pass LBP up without a heartbeat because it suits me more.

But then again, if grown ass men/women are saying how great this game is, there's got to be some kind of truth somewhere which is why I'm intrigued enough to play it.

For this game to sell, I think it would have to fall on the age demographic of the average PS3 user. If the user base is around 7-15 years old, this game has a great chance of selling well. With the older demographic, it may struggle a bit on pushing units.

I know what Sony is going for which is to establish it's identity as a versitile console like it's other two platforms but as of right now, It's like the console for the hardcore. But with the price drop and LBP with home releasing, this could change.

I will reserve further opinion until I actually play Little Big Planet or at least the demo.

yes it was proposed to Nintendo...and I am so glad they turned it down...this game is gorgeous, creatively free, and limitless because of the PS3's more beefier hardware than the Wii's, to put it nicely...the "Regginator" even tried to diss the PS3 by saying, "I don't know how it will sell on that platform"...like Julia Roberts told the store clerks in Pretty Woman, "Big mistake...huuuge"...the developers were also taken under Sony's wing, a smart move...LBP will do wonders for PlayStation, I agree with Pachter...it screams next-gen, and the price of the hardware will be more suitable for all audiences by the time it is released...this is a winner...

I have no idea what this game is about, but it looks new and different. After playing RFOM, Halo 1 through 26 (j/k), Gears of War, Bioshock and blah blah blah, it'll be nice to play something that looks different and a different gameplay altogether (or at least it seems like a different gameplay??). I did enjoy them all, but......

Either way, it's time for something new and I hope that it doesn't disappoint.
