For games with a lot of cut scenes it may be that you need more space - but I think procedural generation and compression can get most games to fit on a single DVD. What MS needs to do is allow the HDD to be mandatory for all games so a cache similar to what is used in PCs is available to reduce the storage issues and improve the speed.

By the way - to say you cannot do a game on XBOX 360 is silly - you would just have to ship with multiple discs. So this statement isn't very credible. You could say "we couldn't do the game as we plan to do it on a single disc" and I would believe that but a general statement - I call BS. Even for sandbox games - you just have to have more procedural generation.

I'm sure that unless some effort is made many PS3 games would be too big for the 360. I'm glad that I have a PS3 and I'm glad that I won't have to miss out on great games. It is not "needed" it just means you have to use more than one disc. Something NO ONE has ever complained about before. Did having two discs ever make a Resident Evil game any less fun? No.

Secret I got them all right the first time do I get a cookie? Those are some sick graphics and I think anyone with a brain could agree but what does any of that have to do with bluray or the enjoyment level of a game? i think thats more because we didn't really have a choice, seriously. you keep thinking "but what about before? we never complained about more than 1 disc before" but this is different, back then when we had CDs, there was no other way to store data except in cartridges which the PS1 did not use and nothing used DVD yet. in the PS2/XBOX era we only had DVDs and CDs, thats it. so all the games used DVDs unless you wanted to put your games on CDs instead making it even worse, but this era, the next gen era its different. While one uses DVD, there is a choice to go even bigger to blu ray, we arent being held back by technology any longer, so if you're going to use that argument that we didnt complain before, it was because our technology wasn't advanced enough and now look, we are only using 25 gigs for blu ray now and we can even go up to 100 gigs now while DVD is stuck at 9 gigs.

Companies creating PS3 titles will say it is needed. Companies working for 360 titles say it is not needed. Is this not what we've come to expect?

Besides I consider storage not an issue. Heavenly Sword could have gone onto a 50GB disc because of the sound and yet that game is incredibly short; yet incredibly enchanting. I long assumed that more data would mean longer and better games and so far we have yet to see such a combination and I don't expect to see it anytime soon considering how 10 hours is the figure for most next-gen games. Apparently, they're just too expensive and take too long to make them longer.

But this argument is irrelevant as the consoles are now matched in price. Just get whatever one has the games you want to play.

Relatively speaking, there is little to no price gap considering their value especially considering the price gap was used to justify Blu-Ray, not only as a Movie player, but as a critical aspect for gaming. Justification is no longer needed.

In the UK, the Elite is £299 although bundles show that get a game with that for £315. Also a PS3 with two games is £349. Price is relatively matched.

This information is from a developer that develops now for all platforms. Why would the discredit themselves with false information when it could possibly hurt them in future sales? My guess is that they gave up the exclusivity to Sony for GTA4 only to get into a real platform that enables them to do what their artistic abilities are fully capable of and DVD9 was not going to enable them to do this.

So far, I have only gotten to glance at a few shots of this game and it does look awesome. The mere concept of it is definitely unlike any other open world we have seen yet. However, I hate to put a kink in this article, but even though it must require huge amounts of storage for all the data that could possibly be used in a game of this type, it could be place on multiple discs (don't think I personally would like that though if I had to switch discs mid game, etc...). Not sure how that works unless the initial disc would load the main game engine onto the HDD. I haven't heard of this developer before, but from what I have seen... I am glad I have a PS3.

Anyway. this is the kinda game im looking forward to. A game where I can explorer all over a city in crisp detail. No having many disks would not work for this game. because old games like RE you can't go back after you change disks. games that you can free roam citys can not change disks. unless you want to get up and switch every time you drive to another part of the city. face it DVD is not going to hold out much longer. just look at mass effect. its has the same repeating vices and backgrounds over and over like oblivion.

about Crysis, there's a difference between console data and PC data.
its ok to compress for Crysis because once you install it ALL the data extracts into your hard drive and the game runs from there. In consoles the game is run from the disk, sure many games store data from the disk on the hard drive but its only for faster loading times and game saves.

Okay, i'm sure you all remember oblivion. Well it was huge, looked great, and it was free roming. Well i do beleive that they had plenty of space on the dvd. Now think back when, do you rememeber morrowind (eldor scrolls 3) well it was huge infact one of the biggest games for the xbox. as of now even 360 developers are saying they are using 90% of the 360's capability... while the same developers are saying ony 40% for the ps3. The reason levels in killzone 2 are 2gb is because the whole level is rendered in real time in 3d. That means no load times, seamless intergration from cutscenes to gameplay and insain lighting effects. You can try to defend yourself in 2 years while your playing on 3 discs and still having flat backgrounds.

Just wanted to state that the only reason Warkhawk's on BluRay in the first place is because it's the only allowable disc format for PS3 games. It fully installs onto the HD, and is the same size as the downloadable version. In fact, you can select the game from the menu, and once it begins loading, you can take the disc out and play just fine; it's only needed for an initial verfication, and if you want to watch the sparse "bonus" materials.

Just felt that it wasn't fair to include that as a claimed testament to Sony's medium size. And Heavenly Sword's taken me much longer than 5 hours. You can speed run through almost any game if you really wanted to...

I'm glad to see developers finding a sense of freedom with the size given to them, and hope they use it well. I'm not a fan of GTAs, mostly because I don't get a kick out of running people over and stealing cars, but this game, at least from the initial trailer, seemed like it'd be more of a mystery/detective kind of thing, which sounds cool. I can't wait to see how Quantic Dreams will use the PS3 as well. Indigo Prophecy was an amazingly in depth and huge game, despite being pseudo-linear. Hopefully these talented devs. will do more than make their next game (Heavy Rain) pretty, which I believe they will.

woah i thought I downloaded warhawk.. guess i have it on a bluray disc and didnt even know it.. PGR has what.. 10 tracks? you forget that motorstorm has 8 tracks... with 3 very different routes that can be taken on each track... in my humble opinion blows away the "turn left here or you hit this wall, see this side street, no you can't go that way , its just to tease you" aspect of racing. and the "dynamic weathering" makes me laugh, sure sure, we don't need a night track, a cloudy day looks exactly like a night track, see this rain, its just the same static droplets covering the camera, you don't actually see that rain drops hit the car, or the fact that you are going a 100 mph, and the rain on your windshield and hood are static, thats real innovative there. Microsoft has already said that Developers could require a HDD for games, there is no upper limit on game data storage for Xbox 360 games.

Saying you 'need' blue-ray for a video game just betrays your lack of understanding about computer archetecture.

Creating game *data* costs money. Artists and 3D Modelers costs money. Games arent going to explode in data size because of *BUDGETS* not because PS3 fanboys can't get their head around what external storage means.

If Noir wanted, they would ship the game on mutli-discs and install the data to the HD. No problem. Virtually no cost.

I expect MS to make a firmware patch that adds a precache-game-disc option sometime just because it is so trivial to do.

The base console for Xbox 360 has a 20gb HDD, I am assuming at least 2-4gbs of data is going to be needed to be saved to the HDD so it can stream / pre-load the game.

Oblivion for the Ps3 required 1.7gbs of pre-installed data.

Do the math, after 360 HDD is formated it has 14gb of space, you expect M$ to allow games to have an "unlimited" amount of data storage? Please consider facts before going on a rant next time.

Data streaming of textures with high polygon counts require mass data storage devices. The more space you have, the more data you can store, the more you can create.

Games are getting more and more detailed and compression won't really help if those games are going to be in proper HD. We went from game cartridges to games on CDs to games on DVDs and now games on Blue ray. yeah well that doesn't change the fact that the dialogue and universe looks bland and depressingly mechanical, by this i mean the abundant lack of organic life. I agree with what a lot of people are saying. Blu ray is ultimately advantageous for some games but not all. Hsowrd can prob be done on 360 and the extra space didnt make the game any longer. However some games i truly believe can only be done on ps3. GT5 is quite obvious. Killzone 2 and MGS4 maybe maybe not ratchet and clank e.t.c. I think uncharted is also another game that can only be done on ps3. The point however is Blu ray provides extra space and sony probably pressures devs to find ways to fill this space. Then they fill it with 10GB of audio. In the future as game engines get more complex it will get harder and harder to fit the games into 9GB discs. Its the natural progression. Games like GTA and LA NOIRE could probably benefit immensely from blu ray with their larger environments or they could just end up being filled with 10GB of audio. When devs use Blu-Ray, they don't compress the data. There's no need to. Stating that LA Noire is too big for the 360 means that they didn't waste their time compressing any of the data and/or they only want it on one disc. As it stands, the 360 still doesn't need Blu-Ray for gaming.

It's not too big for the 360. Blueray and DVD are the same size disc. The Xobox can shrink 80gig to a dvd because it is in fact god!

Here's my dilema. I agree that its not needed for most games. I think Rockstar should make a point though. It has been said that they begged MS for a few gigs disc space. I kinda wish they would do something where everytime you cross into a new area of the city it makes you swap out discs. 5 discs for 5 parts of the city. 360 would still have the game and MS would be pissed and give all the core gamers HD Drives(Would be smart). I dont think a full BRD 25 gig's is needed but DVD9 seems to be just a bit to small for many dev's these days....

Is it just me, or is anyone else staring to worry about Multi platform games? Where the BD vs dvd, its seems that when ps3 are getting ripped off. The Devs can't build games for the ps3, because they have to look out for little brother (Xbox) and keep it to dvd standards.

I'm not really knocking DVD or XBOX, but it just isn't fair to ps3 owners if devs have to keep it small for the Xbox to handle the games.

What will they do? Will they just give up on PS3 and only use DVD size games? This is the hope of all 360 owners, but truly with games like lair, HS, etc... What do you do if your a Dev? If you truly want nice games you are going to have to get a bigger disk, the Xbox just doesn't offer this, Do you make 2 versions a packed BD, and a DVD disk? then your 12 million Xbox owners will be mad because their games lacks features and graphics?

I can see where your coming from there. The thing is developers are in it for the joy of the art. At the amount most people in the game industry get paid, you really can't be in it for anything else. But publishers only and quite honestly right so want money.

So is DVD limiting games? I don't really think so, but I'm not a developer so...

But in general there is a downside to BR for games. There isn't really any cost formula for Game Date vs Cost. But lets just said, except for sound, each Gig cost 2 million. Thats most likely no where near right, but its just an example. What happens when something is say 20 gigs of compress data? In this example that could cost 40 mil.

So really I don't personally think BR is necessary this gen, but as bad as it may seem if a developers really wanted to use BR instead of DVD. Well thats what 1st party titles are for. Everywhere else they are in it for the money, which mean multi-platform, which means DVD size.

Microsoft did a lot of things right with the xbox360 but made a big mistake with the core with no hard drive and HD-Drive. The Devs are having problems now with disk space. What will it be like in three years from now. Gamers always want more and better every year.

MS barely did anything right with the 360 hardware wise...the hardware is horridly unreliable...and like you mentioned no HD-DVD or HDD on the core model, leaving that system the common denominator for all 360s...however MS has made a smart decision to start allowing developers to require an HDD for the best experience...That does create yet another SKU PR nightmare (the ONLY reason the core exists is to have that one up on Sony price wise)...

what MS did right was all software wise, and business wise...they threw money at developers for exlusive content...they created good development kits, and most importantly...got the kits to developers very very early...they have a relatively cheap royalty payment for licensing (its roughly 1/3 of what Sony charges for the PS3)...their online sevice is user friendly and loaded with content..

So both big companies are somewhat opposites...Sony has nailed the hardware down without a question...people can argue day and night about whether BD is needed or not...but it definitely doesn't hurt it...the advantages of DVD9 over BD are totally solved by every PS3 having a HDD...so with that said...DVD9 is not superior to BD for gaming in any single way in the cases of these consoles...Sony also created a console with arguably much larger potential...

However Sony mistakes are apparent too...ol' Ken dropped the ball big time on 3rd party developers...leaving exclusive content up for grabs, and worse...even pissing off many loyal Japanese firms...one of many reasons he is no longer in charge...Sony didn't get development kits out anywhere near early enough...they didn't finalize hardware until literally months before launch...and there development tools are still being optimized (SCE says KZ2 and R&C ToD are what is finalizing their EDGE kits...and the complete free dev tools won't be fully available to 3rd parties until later this winter)...

point being...don't kid yourself...the only thing MS got right on the 360 was making sure it at least had the power to play games in HD...everything else hardware wise has rushed written all over it...

you figure 2 years in now...roughly 12 million'ish sold...and the systems life is most likely no longer than the first 1...pegging it right back at ~25 million worldwide again...thats hardly growth...and figuring Sony actually has just barely started to lose market share (people forget about the PS2...which has sold so many compared to Wii/Xbox 360/PS3...they barely even matter yet)...and the market share they are just barely losing so far isn't to MS...its to Nintendo, and its in Japan...the 360 is selling more than the PS3 nearly everywhere but Japan...but the PS2 and PS3 combined, therefor Sony, is still out selling MS every single place in the world...

So the only real change going on is that the PS3 isn't doing anything for future market control yet...Sony hasn't lost anything "yet", and its obvious that the PS3's next few years will have a lot to do with that...MS isn't stealing anything...Sony is simply letting its market grip slip...Xbox as a brand is barely growing....

overall though none of that matters to us...360 owners seem to be happy with it...and the PS3, while struggling in terms of sales, is still getting plenty of great games in the near future (and whether 360 fans want to admit it or not; already has way more great games than it gets credit for)...and PS3 owners are happy with it...so who cares...Sony may not end up being the juggernaut it has been for the past decade and a half, but the end gamer is still getting plenty of fun...

I seem to recall reading not no many months ago that Halo3 was going to be 1080p native @ 60 fps, IF THEY COULD FIT IT ONTO ONE DVD. Well hindsight tells us they over shot a bit and couldn't even reach 720p, M$'s own self proclaimed "Sweetspot".

Anyone want to guess why? Is Xbox incapable of 720p? No thats not the reason, we all know Xbox can do it. I guess they ran out of room. If they're only running out by a Gig or 2 due to miscalculations, what do they do? Put in on 2 disc? No, they cut corners elsewhere, dumb down the resolution. Thats what they did. Others might leave out textures, or use less polys. Point is they have to COMPROMISE somewhere to squeeze onto a 15 year old medium. So I dont know why the Sony Fanboys keep calling it Halo HD because technically its not in HD, its just upscaled, no different from my DVD collection. But it could have been in HD if they had the room. HD visuals are the biggest reason for the need for extra space and XB was leading the charge, but just looking at the list Bladstar printed yesterday so many XBox games dont reach what I thought was their mandatory bare minimun. 720p.

And for those that keep saying I dont mind changing a disk, it really depends on the type of game doesn't it. If I have to change disk to play level 11-20 on a shooter its not so bad. If I have to change disk to drive across the bridge in a GTA type game into the next city, only to come back and change it again, it doesn't work does it. GO ON BOTS admit it. That would suck balls and you know it. And developer would have to design around these handicaps instead letting their imaginations run free.

You don't seem to understand, Sony has to win the format war because that is what will ensure them of income for the nex 15-20 years from a ton of companies (including MS) If they were to focus on the console front then how will people accept Blu-Ray as the next media format and not just the "gaming" format for now. They must win the format war and fight the console war afterwards, not the other way around. You can spin this in any way you want but if Blu-Ray wins, expect your XBOX720 to be running Blu-Ray and every game you buy puts money in Sony's pocket as well, would that be not the ultimate victory? They could stop the Playstation line after this and just let MS make money for them. (Blu-Ray is Sony's format so they get the royalties.)

I guess the reality is that more storage for more advanced games is natural progression. Both systems have HDD and both could facilitate a cache to ease transition. I think the argument about having to change discs could be addressed when considering a sandbox game such as this due to the prospect of the gaming map being a city (no ideal points to simply have a disc change message). To this end it is clear that more storage space is advantageous but i do not believe that games at the present time 'cannot' be acheieved with 360; i feel this may be the case in the future however, unless HDDVD is utilised in gaming (which MS has previously stated it would not be doing). At the end of the day they are both great consoles and they will play to theit own strengths.

Which is the actual physical RAM available to either console(512MB).Software development in general now requires more space, because of the tools and languages used, which tend to be more generalised.I know it's not practical, but can you imagine what could be attained with a well written piece of assembly code on either machine? Anyway,both consoles will be crippled by the lack of RAM for their entire lifetime. sony was sensible enough to keep all there systems with the basic needs for gaming bluray,hard drive and internet connection 360 wasn,t
theres to many variations on the 360 and way to many add ons sh*t its like lego building add wireless, add hard drive ,add hd dvd.equals eyesore who wants all that stuck under youre bravia 40" 1080p set
no disc space is a must when your limited with ram and hard drives go with out saying period
hence the 360 is becoming obsolute already if were talking hi def

If you're talking obsolete in gaming terms, then both consoles are obsolete in comparison to latest technology.However, storage wise you certainly have a point in relation to HDD's. Sony did make the right decision there.Making an HDD standard is, in my opinion, the best move Sony have made.Unfortunately, they have yet to use it in any meaningful way.As for BLURAY, well, i understand what you are driving at, but surely agreeing with the argument for HDD's makes the bluray point redundant,doesn't it? Bluray make be great for movies, but for games it's a red herring!Give me 2MB of RAM in my console of choice and see the real difference that would make.

This is the news that should be shocking to ever one now you will see that you need a blue-ray or hddvd to make these great games i am surprise that gt4 is still coming out for Xbox you know that that game is going to be better on ps3 because of the space they have on the disk and rummer has it that Microsoft has to supply hard drives just to play gt4

And others retaliate by slamming 360 games they've barely played and talk up PS3 games that aren't even out yet. Look. Gears of War and Halo 3 shipped with 10 hour campaigns and about a dozen maps each. BOTH were on one disc. I'm VERY satisfied with the amount of content from both of those games. Mass Effect has 80 hours of gameplay and is a game of the year contender with some of the best graphics I've ever seen. NOTHING on PS3 is outdoing the graphics of any these games. Have any of you paid attention to where these quotes are coming from?! A PS3 dev complains about disc space on 360 while 360 devs complain about the complicated nature of the cell processor in the PS3. With GTA4, Rockstar complained about BOTH because they were working on both. Devs will figure out the Cell Processor problem just like they will figure out the disc space problem. Relax.
