Absolutely none of the games mentioned has a chance of achieving the level of success that Halo 3 has achieved.

Consider that many of the games listed exist in franchises that have already seen games released...and none of those previous games achieved the level of success that previous Halo games did.

For example, Unreal is a game series that has never sold well on consoles. Games like Unreal and Quake have always sold well on the PC...but there is no way either of those games is a threat to Halo 3.

The new Half-life game is going to be a good game, but it has gameplay that is too complex for the mass market.

Call of Duty 4 will be a huge success on the Xbox 360, because that is the version that will benefit most from the beta test, and because the Xbox 360 version has the best graphics. However, even though Call of Duty 2 was Game of the Year on the Xbox 360, it still didn't come close to the level of success that the Halo games had achieved.

And new game series like Haze will definitely not come close to being as successful as Halo.

When I was waiting for Halo 3 at midnight, there were hundreds of cars in the parking lot, and the security officers of the mall had to change the direction of the people standing in line several times because it was so long.

Bioshock is an incredible killer-app that receved a rating of 10 out of 10 from the majority of reviews, and it has sold about 2 million copies, which makes it a huge success. None of these games listed will be rated as high as Bioshock..but Bioshock is still very far from a "Halo-killer".

Most developer spend their money on creating a great nextgen game...Halo3 is a piece of crap. I'm not just saying this but I was hoping for a truely nextgen experiance when I played Halo3. Most xbots will put down any game that comes to PS3 without even playing it, they will just go by what some bias reveiw had to say. Most people want Halo to suck, but the truth is I wanted Halo3 to be good and even better than Halo1..I just can't beleave anyone that has played Halo3 can honestly say it's a good game...RFOM is 10 times better than Halo3 and trust me xbots get outside of the box and try RFOM and see for yourself what a real Nextgen FPS is really like. I play games and to me the best next gen game is still on 360 and that's Gears of War...Unlike xbots I can give credit were credit is due. The problem I have with 360 is that games don't seem to improve, like the PS3. Every exclusive on PS3 just seem way more advance than 360 exclusives. I know multiplatform games been slightly better on 360 but as we all know there won't be a difference for to long. Exclusives is what wins console wars and from what I can see PS3 exclusives dominates 360. 360 doesn't have one proven franchise coming in 2008.

UT3 will probably better Halo 3 in multiplayer, while Crysis will probably better Halo 3 in single-player. And while I agree with most of the others, I seriously doubt that the Orange Box will mount a serious challenge. Sure, its a brilliant package but its basically a re-release of a 3-year old game with some extras that add around 4-5 hours gameplay time.

I agree about UT3 and Crysis, both should be much higher "threat" or whatnot. But even though I am a huge UT fan and will probably let that game suck the most time out of me, Crysis's multiplayer isn't anything to sneeze at. I've been playing some of the beta and the suit functions really bring a new level of tactics and strategy to an online fps experience.

But ya TF2 has been mia for 7 years, and is one of the best multiplayer experiences around.

otherwise this comparison is just some guy's opinion, and I doubt anything will beat halo in terms of sales this holiday. But none of this should matter to your normal person, its not like playing a game that you know has sold a ton makes it any better of a game.

I think the reasoning is both those games will take either A. A BAD A$$ PC to play or B. a next gen console. UT3 has a high attach rate to PC gamers and not so much console... It makes sense but as far as quality of gaming and FPS... Cant beat Crysis. UT3 will be amazing too.

I agree about those 3 being worthy place holders on the list this guy made. But you shouldnt overlook what the orange box is bringing. I mean the amount packed in is massive, especially for your average console gamer who hasent played HL2 and Episode 1. They get to catch up there, then play through episode 2, and already youve got a frighteningly lengthy single player experience. Then portal which should be entertaining for some, maybe not for others, adding in another 5+ hours maybe.

But the real Gem is going to be TF2. I used to have such a blast with that game and I think this will be the game steal some thunder from the real elephant in the room for bar-setting online fps: CS.

First off even though many people havent played these games, most every game on the list is able to be judged by some criteria.

HL2 can be judged by those who have played it, in the reference-frame of console gamers who might not have ever played it. Also many people have been able to play Crysis and Quake wars through their respective online betas (the latter leaving a bad taste in my mouth personally lol). UT3 and Haze can be judged on credentials and the information released, just like it was valid to say halo 3 would probably be very similar in terms of quality to halo 2 and 1.

If I correctly interpret "etc" to mean saved pictures and forge then I am not sure you mean unique. I think the word your looking for here is standard. In the context of PC gamers, saved films, saved pics, and an editor that is rivaled by the editors packaged with 8 year old PC games, are a very mundane thing to tout as unique.

Any person with a computer can hit printscreen or the button assigned to printscreen. Anyone with a computer can download a free program like fraps, that allows you to record anything you like. Most games dateing back to Quake have had the functionality to ingame record, so that it could be saved as a smaller file(basically a list of input commands) so that it could be latter interpreted by the engine it was made with and there is your replay. (this is usually like a demorec function that is mostly used for official matches) PC Modders who are used to editors that come packaged with todays games most likely wont be praising the ingenuity of a system that will only let you paste objects and rearrange the elements but never touch the canvas. like editors found on consoles from timesplitters on ps2, to skateing games for ps1.

The barrier between Console and PC is becoming more malleable and will eventually become little more than an artifact in our way of thinking. Anyway if you cant handle the discussion then dont come in here swinging at air.

I referred to Halo 3's features as being unique. By this I meant that even if it has been on PC games for awhile (more accurately, operating systems, as print screen is a feature of the latter), those features are unique to console games.

Crysis a "Halo 3 killer" umm yeah if Halo 3 was on PC but it's not so it does not matter(who has a PC to run it well?). And as far as UT 3 goes, I have yet to see any UT game on a console sell like hotcakes besides UT champ on Xbox. Gears of war = lack of story like halo 3 but gears is way better to look at..

Resistance = way better story and a good online.. Graphics aren't that bad either. Probably a little better than halo 3 and resistance was a launch title..

Warhawk = online play is way more in depth.. No lag, its free, and there's so many different ways to play the game..

Bioshock = I havent played this game yet but a lot of friends said this game was awesome.. And when i asked if halo 3 was better they laughed..

Bioshock has done amazingly well from a sales point of view; it has sold over 2 million copies in such a short time.

But that still isn't even close to the level of success that Halo 3 has achieved.

Bioshock, and Gears of War are both huge successes, but Halo 3 is the champion of videogaming.

Ever since the 2006 E3, the three games that dominated all of the Awards at the Trade Shows were Gears of War, Bioshock, and Mass Effect.

Mass Effect is the game that will follow in the footsteps of Gears of War, and Bioshock, because that is exactly what has happened with the Awards at the Trade Shows.

Mass Effect has received far more Awards than all of the games N4G lists here.

Bioshock, Mass Effect, Halo 3 and Gears are highly likely to sow up almost every Game of the Year award.

How about from Metacritic review scores (you know, the consensus on the Industry's professional press)?

How about sales? Halo 3 is the largest Entertainmnet opening in HISTORY. It sold $300 Million worth of copies in a fcuking week? Can that qualify it as "killer" enough?

Not one of those games is likely to unseat Halo 3 in any aspect of measure.

Not one of those games is likely to unseat BS, GoW, ME or Halo 3 for Metacritic concensus.

Not one of those games is likely to outsell BS, GoW, ME or Halo 3.
Not one of those games is likely to win awards that Halo 3 (or BS, GoW, ME) qualify for.

You'll say anything, make _any_ intellectually dishonest argument just to try and deny reality: The reality is that 2007, from a games perspective (even if you TOTALLY ignore Halo 3) has been dominated by Xbox 360.

These games mentioned, while their will likely be some very good games that I'll play and enjoy; some will sell pretty well; some will get good reviews. But there is *no* way that any will be as good, sell as well, be universally loved (except for SDF members) as Halo 3.

That said, the biggest challenge to Halo 3's dominance actually comes from the Xbox 360 Library -- not from these unknown experiences.

As Lair and Folklore reviews show, hype is no match for reality.

As much as I'm looking forward to Killzone 2, it just got great graphics and thats it. From looking at the gameplay its nothing new like Halo 3 was but I love Halo 3 because its so much fun. KZ2 will not do anything new like many of the sony fanboys think, I just want it to be a good looking and great playing game which it should be. Call of Duty 4 is 60 frames per second with intense gameplay, fast action, and advanced A.I. that will rival Halo 3. Halo 3 may have $170 million on the first day, but when people see Call of Duty 4 in action they are going to freak out!!!! with the realism and superior graphics that will blow the wawter out of Halo 3. Brothers in Arms too looks nice with ultra realistic gameplay set in World War 2. Then again Haze might surpise everyone with it's innovative gameplay. All in all I choose Call of Duty 4 cause of it's next gen single player and deathmatch system to rival Halo's matchmaking.

Thats it...Crysis can not because how many people will actually modify their computer to run the game in its fullest?? Either way i dont think they can 'kill' halo 3 but these games can certainly make the gamers put Halo 3 in their shelves and pick up dust. BTW...Halo3's offline co-op SUCKS! i NEVER seen such a HUGE drop in graphics and to make it worse the game doesn' even fully cover the TVs screen (assuming you have a Widescreen HDTV)WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING?? VERY VERY dissapointing for the game that broke records.

The offline co-op is dookie in Halo 3. The overall graphics in Halo 3 are sorry. Its a good game but they could have done so much better. It must be a limitation of the DVD9, since the xbox 360 can do much better graphics that Halo 3. 640p????? come on....

Halo 3 will have sold 5 million copies. There won't be any killing of halo 3 by any game. Period. The game is already a superstar...

Killzone 2 will also sale a bunch if it is good. So far it is awesome...It is way more realistic and bloody compared to cartoony Halo 3.

I not a big a fan of Halo but I must admit that i don't believe there is such a thing as a Halo killer. In a relatively short amount of time Halo has become a culture icon. And nobody can say anything about selling $170 million worth of copies. That's just ridiculous.

Halo can't be beat. But if you want some worthy alternatives for a fun FPS then there's plenty out there - especially if you don't have an xbox 360.

UT3 would be my immediate pick of the current bunch until Killzone 2 arrives.

This is the solution of PC gamers that like the UT franchise. For those who can't afford a High end PC, you can own Nubs on that flat screen high definition screen. Now, I'm a Huge Bungie Fan, but seriously, are you guys looking at the same Unreal Tournament 3 that I am? You know, the one that makes Gears of War look ugly?
