Microsoft is ramping up development of its next generation Xbox console according to job positions being advertised on business networking site LinkedIn.
Don't get too ahead of yourself Microsoft.
If they start with research now you can expect new Xbox ~2 years from now so you probably won't see 360 getting dumped like last time with xbox.
^^^agree, this is just planing ahead of the competition.the 360 wont be dumped because the install base is too huge.plus it wouldnt make sense financial wise.
Really? Do you not remember what MS said last time: http://www.cnet.com.au/xbox...
I believe it will be announced at next year's E3 and released 2013. And its kind-off a Coincidence that this comes after Epic's Epic Tech Demo of Epic next-gen graphics. Perhaps they are working together again. Epic told Microsoft to increase RAM for the 360. http://www.1up.com/news/epi... They really have an Amazing Relationship even though Epic is a 3rd Party studio. Epic Practically saved the Xbox 360
would it really be epic or the unreal engine 3? Epic themselves have contributed only a few games out of the 360's long list of UE3 based games. They definitely had a hand in setting up what would be the 360's best (most used) graphics engine. Doubling if not quadrupling the amount of system RAM is a given for the next box. Perhaps even going so far as to use dual quad core cpu/gpu. That way the chips can both do processor intensive and graphics either in tandem or alternately. AMD/ATI has been working on their multipurpose chips for years. Seems only fitting MS turn to AMD again for the brains and brawn of the next gen. The basis will at the very least be DX12 and ATI (i think) has already shown some heavy gfx power.
We all know you do, Morganfell, we all know you do..
@morgan fell De' Nile isn't just a river in Egypt, you know......So i assume thats how you get so many disagrees after presenting facts. It may not happen with the 360 though, far larger user base.
A new Xbox worries me. While the Xbox 360 did better than the original Xbox abroad, the 360 was still consumers 3rd choice worldwide since it's had any competition - and now I worry that Microsoft may be blinded by Kinect/Casual money. One thing Nintendo proved this go around is you don't have to have the most powerful hardware. If you rope in the casual's you can easily make a cheaper console and make a tonne of money. That's what worries me, that the next 360 won't be some gaming powerhouse but might be a cheaper, casual themed console aimed directly at the Wii audience. I don't think there's a current 360 owner out there that wants to see that - but from a business perspective that makes all kinds of sense for MS, especially if they can get it out before another Wii releases. Everyone expects the new Xbox to push out games like high end PC's but I can't say that'd be practicable for Microsoft from a business perspective. I mean who knows if they're even going to break even with the 360 before they retire it. They still have a ways to go before that happens (not that the PS3 is any better in that respect). My concern is that Microsoft may be blinded by Kinect money and leave it's core gamers out in the cold. Personally, I want to see a new Xbox that pushes hardware limits, but Microsoft's Shane Kim had already commented in the past that the next Xbox might be a cheaper, digital distribution type hub. And given that XBL has been their main cash cow - could a subscription based Xbox be that far off? We live in uncertain times as gamers. Facebook games, mobile games, casual games taking over...who know's what the next gen is going to look like.
They did dump the last xbox, but I wouldn't give a shit. If a new one is released I'll buy it... like I have done since the ZX spectrum. Then the old one will gather dust until it is deposited into the attic of my house to be forgotten. Then I'll log onto a mediocre news site full of losers and nerds and argue how my new xbox is better than the other hypothetical consoles of the future.
dwellers of the box , Gates is calling you... http://sam-azar.com/wp-cont...
Good News! and If they discontinue xbox360, All the 3rd party games will be turned as PS3 exclusive.
Was it the KZ AV o0
i hate people that say microsoft dumped the xbox. Nividia and Intel screwed microsoft over so they had to drop it. Intel and nividia charged microsoft the same price for parts over the whole lifetime of the xbox. Even though the cpu and gpu were only worth about 20 bucks each those greedy suckers kept charging microsoft like 100 bucks for them. And Intel and nividia wonders why microsoft wont work with them for the new parts in the 360 and this new system. Oh and the hard drive makers burned them as well. Its like the US housing market why would you want to pay high payments on a house that was worth 1mill but its now only worth 400k. But your still paying the 1mill mortgage every month.Eventually you have to let the house go and thats what microsoft did.
@awi It's part of the contract. M$ pays a certain amount for a certain part. Even if the cost of the parts went down they still have to pay the amount that is on the contract. Example: You rent a $1mil house and pay $2000 month as part of your contract. A few years later that house is worth $500,000. You still have to pay $2000 rent because you signed a contract.
@Otheros00 Yeah but microsoft was new to the console market and they thought they would cut them a deal. They did want to own the rights to the parts but they refused sony and nintendo has simular deals but they could drop price with the cost of parts. I guess these two took advantage of microsoft and they got burned. Thats why with the 360 they made sure not to make the same mistake and thats why they went with amd and ati because they let microsoft own the parts so they could drop price.
So they've only just started?? This is good news. I would like at least two more years with my current machine
Release it ASAP. Battlefield 3 has made my games look significantly worse.
My guess is what is considered "top end" for today's PC will be what the next gen console from MS will be. Except I am betting it will only have about 3gigs of system RAM instead of 4+ which the PC would need to handle the overheard of the OS. AND it will release Holiday 2012.
im excited for the new xbox
dude your name is very misleading and disturbing at the same time...CONGRAULATIONS! YOU WIN THE FANBOY OF THE YEAR AWARD!!!
"dude your name is very misleading and disturbing at the same time...CONGRAULATIONS! YOU WIN THE FANBOY OF THE YEAR AWARD!!!" i only own a ps3. its disturbing cause YOU are the fanboy
If it is shaped like an X like in the picture that would be really interesting but I really doubt they would do that, they really should try something cool with a X tho, in the design, the 360 didnt really do that. I mean it is called Xbox.
That picture is one of the first images from the time when first xbox was planed, about 10 years ago... it was someones blind guess, it doesn't mean anything.
sweet, it's time for new consoles
I think we can get at least two years out of current generation consoles before a successor is on the horizon. Kinda weird being at this stage though knowing just a few years ago quite a few people were saying we'd start seeing new consoles around 2012!
Hopefully they can take the time to design it this time and not have to make people like me go through 4 Xbox 360s in just 5 freaking years. While they are at it, at least have ideas on working on some 1st party studios and make sure they remain commitment to them. So far most the exclusive in house studios that Microsoft launched with the Xbox 360 are long dead and buried because they decided to 'pull out'.
Were you like a major xbox fanboy at some point? I can't imagine anyone putting themselves through that.
I'm on my third xbox in 5 years, and the drama has been minor. First one received for my birthday. played with over the evening, it was red ringed in the morning, took it back to best buy next day, they replaced it no questions asked. That one lasted a year and some months... about 6 months after the warranty extension, called max, had a new xbox about 3 weeks later, no questions asked. Got a xbox 360 slim this xmas. You make it sound like it was some huge hassle, and it really wasn't....
No not at all. 2 of them (which broke down) were given as gifts, and the other two (1st one and 3rd one) I bought for myself 1 in 2006 and another in 2009. Through all this, I went through only one PS3 (60GB Model) and roughly 10 days ago, it died on me, and I got a 160 GB slim with a 1TB HDD about 3 days ago. If it weren't for the 2 360s that were given as gifts, I would never even have bought another 360. I do most of my gaming on the PS3 anyway.
Its about freaking time!!!
'NexBox'.. Honest... I think that's awesome!! Yeah I think the comments above are correct... I'm expecting this end of 2012. I really want the new generation of consoles.. Seeing the BF3 footage was just outrageous!! I respect the PC gamers, but I just don't like using KB&M... Besides... I'm forced to use that for work anyway!! I'm also expecting the next Xbox to use a similar format to that of the NGP... I would be very suprised if they swallowed their prode and embraced Bluray...
and then what? nexnexbox. it's like using NGP.
Just use a gamepad for PC games, most of them support the 360 gamepad natively and for everything else there is Xpadder and similar services. For some reason, I can't play FPS's with a mouse and keyboard very well anymore but all other genre's are a-ok. Microsoft and Blu Ray aren't that outrages, with Blu Ray films Microsoft is making royalties anyway if the release is using the VC-1 codec. Further, Sony and Microsoft have a pretty good relationship working together outside of the games industry. Unless they go proprietary or the DVD Forum has a new format in the works, I think it's safe to say the next Xbox will have a Blu Ray drive.
Well if you look back to 2002 MS said it was going to be a 3 step process to be competitive 1 enter the maket 2 build a brand icon 3 be number 1 verdict is out but they have come much farther than those who laughed at them back in 2002 for even entering the console race Look at em now
see ya next year...
With the team now being formed I expect a Fall 2013 release date.
its going to be at least 3 years dudes........... they arent really number one. Not even number 2
It doesn't matter if they were 1, 2, or even a close 3. Microsoft substanially increased their market share this generation. They get to claim success. Prattle on about multiple consoles due to failures all you want...software sales back that up.
...debunking from MS*, or the usual "We do not comment on rumors/speculation".
When it comes out depends on whether Microsoft rushes development or takes their time. I'm hoping the console industry just dies already so MS and Sony can just publish their games through STEAM. Then we can all save a bunch of money on games and not have to bitch about whose DRM machine is better. Microsoft is making a big mistake if they're planning on making another console. The PC is the most integrated system out there today. There's no point in trying to create a new, discrete media hub for the living room when people can just extend their PCs to the living room, already.
not everyone is a PC gamer. some people ONLY play games on a home console, because they can't keep up with the growing number of system requirements PC games demand.
PC games are not what they once were. You do not really need high end machines these days unless you want to max games like Crysis 2 and such out. Also, steam basically sets up everything for you so no hunting down weird stuff. Never had one issue with games through steam ever.
blakhood, there's really no difference between a PC and a console other than the fact that a PC is just better in about every where imaginable. Anything you can do with a console, you can do with a PC. @gcolley Oh, good counter to my argument. You really make yourself sound ignorant by hurling insults instead of addressing what I said.
*goes and pops in gears of war 2 in my PC err it isnt working, niether is resistance...can i have some help?
@kaveti6616 - what a stupid thing to say. possibly the dumbest today but then again this is n4g
On PC Microsoft has their own digital store as does Sony, why would they go through Steam when they want people to use their own services? Also, Steam isn't the only digital distributor to hold sales you know... Microsoft is making a ton of money with consoles, why would they give it up to go back to PC for gaming? Joe Consumer likely won't be hooking up their PC to a TV so they can stream their movies, but they might be able to if they can connect application A on their PC in a different room to application B on their console (which is all Windows Media Center takes anyway to stream to a 360).
this is interesting and hopefully they wont rush it this time. i supported microsoft at the start of this gen but after the rrod hit me and all my matews i switched non of them did though lol
If they really are just starting now, which I highly doubt, then they would either need to rush it or we won't see a new console until at least 2013, even that would be pushing it if they truly were just starting now. I know the PS4 is currently being worked on and I expect the XBox.next has already been in progress for some time now as well.
you know its being worked on do you have evidence? I know it most liekly is but you cant just say you know something without providing proof
I know a couple people working on it. Providing proof would just get people in trouble. And a quick search of my linkedin connections pulled up 267 people at Microsoft working on Xbox engineering and development. Surely some of them have been working on the next console. And that's just in my network, which certainly doesn't include everyone.
I love buying new consoles, lets just hope M$ can make one that doesn't break down all the time.
It should be fine. Microsoft lost a truck load of cash on the RROD, they won’t make that mistake again. This next gen Xbox will be near bulletproof. I wonder if they will follow the example of Nintendo and the Wii and have minor hardware upgrades to make profit from the get go?
i hope they don't follow nintendo, but if kinect is any indication their probly going to do exactly that.
Well they are 1-1 in that department. The original Xbox was very solid. Sony had issues with PS1 & PS2, yet get a free pass. We can only wait & see. Early adopters of electronics always take a risk.
I still have my launch ps1 and ps2 and the work fine, never had a problem and i beat the crap out of my ps2 haha.
are not stupid they no that nintendo have that side of gamning along with handhelds lockded down. Yes we have kinect but i dont think microsoft will bank on that next gen. They know they have to compete with sony and the ps4. The next xbox will be much improved and i dont expect another rrod episode although there will be consoles that break which will get a thousand storys on n4g and will be blown out of all proportion. I also predict that the next xbox will be the more powerful system ahead of the ps4. Sony will not risk a processor like the cell again.
As I would have guessed, R&D on the new console is happening now... Next console gets announced similar to how Sony did the PS3 at the 2012 E3, then launches in 2013. Gives them a full year to make design changes, etc... (remember the PS3 Batarang controller?)
You mean boomerang? I saw the controller and i never got/understood the batman reference to it.
nope, I meant batarang. Looked just like one of the old school Batman "Batarangs" to me. either way the point being, should MS have a design decision they want to change "color, style of the controller, etc..." they will have some time to make that change based on public initial reaction.
I just hope they allow Backward Compatibility and use of x360 controllers..
I bet we hear or see some sort of tech demo for the next Xbox at this E3, wouldn't be surprised if it's announced for a release next Holiday season.
could be announced at CES next year. with a massive info blowout at E3 2012 Released Holidays 2012?
This year no!But most likely they will show a full prototype at E3 2012 and will release the console by christmas 2012!Some people are stating 3 years but they can make a fully reliable console in 1 to 2,years today technology is far more advance than 6 year ago!Its going to be based on new PC hardware standards so i wont take long!
I don't think we will hear anything from it at this years E3. Kinect seems to be selling well for Microsoft so far, why would they sacrifice sales at such a pivotal moment for themselves by announcing a new console this early?
Possibly they will continue to sell the 360/kinect as a casual bundle at the same time they release a new console for the hardcore xbox peeples. It would make alot of sense to do that since the 360 probably costs under $100 to produce now. Sony has had a lot of success having PS2/PS3 going at the same time.
I think its possible. If they really dont have any more games to announce at E3, they could instead use an annoucement about the next xbox. Holiday 2012 seems fair. That will be 7 years after 360 launch. That is plenty of time. I honestly wouldnt even mind if it was Holiday 2011.(doubtful)
See Holiday next year would be fine with me, that's still almost two years away when you think about it. We could see some graphical demo's like we saw with the new Unreal engine and maybe a new Halo or something like that. I do think we'll see many more exclusives for the 360 next year no matter what though. I actually am looking forward to a massively amazing Microsoft E3 this year, Gears 3 and Forza 4 and possibly Kingdoms will hold me over till we get some of the new things in. I'm actually a happily satisfied Kinect user and am waiting to see more games on that as well, so whatever Microsoft announces is good news for me.
e3 2012 announcement - xmas 2012 release me thinks
