Rumour: Nintendo to announce Wii 2 in June

Nintendo is rumoured to be announcing details of a forthcoming Wii 2 console at E3 in Los Angeles this coming June.

@EYE: I dunno. I have a Wii and I've been sayin' something like that since they released Metroid Corruption. That game, and all the Primes for that matter, deserve the HD treatment. Not gonna lie. It does make a difference. And to agree that, yeah.. an HD Mario would be pretty dope right about now. Don't get me wrong, I see what your saying, but an HD step up from Nintendo is kinda overdue and not too much to ask for. And actually, DA_SHREDDER'S complaint is a bit of a left-handed compliment.

Um I knew that, even if its only temp it sound horrible, b4 the wii got its official name it was called the Nintendo Revolution, which sound pretty badass then.

Yes, but the name "Wii 2" doesn't come from Nintendo at all. It's not a code name, like the Revolution. It's just what gamers/journalists are calling the hypothetical system.

Since it hasn't officially been announced, it has no official name.

It certainly will not be called "Wii 2" but I believe it is indeed forthcoming. Back in November, Reggie Fils-Aime said they wanted about to sell about 15m more Wii consoles before looking at the next generation.

As we all know, 15m Wii's don't take long to be sold. That would position a successor console not far off in the pipeline.

The only thing I want is a nintendo Home console without the motion control a top priority. The games I've enjoyed very much so far on the wii: kirby epic yarn, DKCR, NSMB wii, Mario kart, Tales games, Twilight princess, SSBB and some other. One thing in common about those game. limited motion control setting or not at all.
would love to see starfox back, but without motion control. I think the 3DS is pleasing the core audience a lot more.

i think the wii2 will have these things ive heard of the marvel quad core cpu its getting but the thing that does point to a wii2 is that Zelda 25th Anniversary project that will be a dark themed Zelda 4 wii2 shown at E3 nintendo said they will show it off before the year is out

Not happening. Sorry, but it is all about the 3DS for the next year. Nintendo doesn't want their customers choosing between either the 3DS, or the Wii 2. Maybe E3 2012.

i could imagine an updated wii maybe with HD and an internal hard drive. But its not time for a new console. This would be a practical thing to have out for the holiday seaosn 2011.

Well the dolphin emulation already puts Wii games in HD and it really doesn't improve the experience more. Its just shiny and no jaggies. The Wii needs HD and a processor boost around xbox 360/PS3 levels. Plus it needs more things like: Better online, achievements, standard controls and motion controls included,Voice chat standard, digital sound, custom soundtracks bootable from the dash (something the PS3 doesn't have), ect. There are many things the next wii could easily do to continue its dominance. Nintendo just has to be smart enough to implement them.

This usually means they have to compensate the mechanics. The motion controls will be just tacked on.
I know what you are thinking, the Ps3 does it with patches. But this happened AFTER the initial design.
While developing games they have to keep both in mind and im pretty sure motion controls will suffer from it.
If its not dedicated, it will be half baked.

I see your point but I disagree. I dont think games like Donkey Kong Country Returns need motion controls. There should at least be the option for the classic controller. I can understand doing motion control only for games that make sense like Metroid Prime Corruption 3 but many first party Nintendo games dont need motion control. Super Smash bros, Mario Galaxy, Pokemon, ect all use normal controls

Not really a rumor, more of a reasonable suspicion. If they keep with the 5 year rule, then its definitive. They need to if they hope to keep their fanbase. (I'm not nearly as interested in Skyward Sword as I was in Twilight Princess). They also need to be more friendly to third party developers too (their policies for development and publishing suck).

The best you are gonna get is a wii hardware revision, so motion plus, updated wifi and an hdmi output/upscaler.

I would love to see nintendo release a beefed up console that could run against playstation and xbox with online play. Nintendo already captured the "casual" audience that the PS3 and 360 are trying to get. It would be wise for them to invest in a more powerful machine to attract core PS3/360 fans. I own all three consoles but rarely play the Wii. If it didnt feel so outdated i would love to play it more often and let the other two collect dust.
