While speaking at a panel at GDC, Cliff Bleszinski touched upon a myriad of different topics. It was very brief, but one of those topics was game preorders. Blezinski feels that preorders as a sales metrics need to go.

Now Cliff talking about pre-orders. I agree 100%. We need to find a new way to reward and merit sales of games. We don't run into a shortage of games anymore. Hell the last time I ever remember a "shortage" of games was Halo 2, even then I could find them in more then one store.

What on earth is with Epic at GDC? So much speaking from them. Interesting.. sometimes though.
the only time i preorder is when you get bonuses. ive had plenty of people tell me to preorder or ill miss out, only for me to come in at 4pm on the day of release and grab a 'limited edition' copy off the shelf.
living in australia means that games NEVER sell out, pretty much anywhere. if i go to JB and its not there, i just walk across the street to Kmart/Big W/Dick Smith and buy it. if, heaven forbid they dont have it, i go to EB and buy one of the 20+ copies they have left (after getting them to price match of course).
