The US And The Sexy Foreign Game Problem

Jowin Okere of writes: Recently, Atlus has announced that their recently released game, Catherine, will be making it’s way to North America this summer. This is good news, because I was a little worried that the game wouldn’t be seen as adaptable to United States culture because of the highly sexual themes. In fact, there are countless games that haven’t made their way to the US because of this reason. Why is there such a stigma attached to overtly sexual video games? I decided to give my opinion on sex in foreign video games and why there are problems attached to bringing these games to the United States, check out my video editorial below:

But is the stigma there becuase it's a highly sexual game or because it's a highly sexual JAPANESE game? Maybe I'm wrong about this, but games like Catherine have this particular 'Japanese feel' to them that only appeals to a niche Western audience. It's a game that has obviously been aimed primarily at a Japanese audience.
Devs and publishers probably think such games won't sell too well in the West and, as a result, they don't release them over here. Catherine's the exception.

Redempteur2789d ago

it's not a highly sexual game..

sure it has some Sexy themes ..but there is no sexual in Catherine ..
with all the comment you can read of uninformed people on N'G you'd think it's a porn game in disguise when it'll probably make your head spin because of the difficulty ..

it's a puzzle game , cleverly designed and quite hard to boost ..

Pozzle2789d ago

True, but the publishers aren't exactly helping dispel those misconceptions with the way the game is being marketed. No wonder people think it's a porn game with all the media that's being released (pictures of Catherine pulling down her bra, Catherine with her legs spread, Catherine in bed with Vincent, etc). I've seen more of that type of stuff than actual gameplay videos of the game.

Redempteur2789d ago

that's because the theme is adultery and temptations ...

nobody complain when the same theme is USED and marketed in movies ...

Pozzle2789d ago

I didn't mean that people were complaining about it. But if a game is being marketed as SEX-SEX-SEX then of course people are going to mistake what the game is about. It's not exactly being marketed primarily as a puzzle game. The 'adultery and temptations' is at the forefront.

Redempteur2789d ago

who marketed it as SEX SEX SEX ..did you see the US atlus teaser ?did you see the japanese teaser/trailers ?

there is a world of difference between sexual and sexy .how the heck are you supposed to talk about adultery if you can't even use the sexy provocations of one the characters ?

it's not the game or the devs fault if people can't treat the information provided .it's easy to judge a game . but there is a lot of information available.did you see some SEX part of the game on youtube ? NO BECAUSE THERE IS N'T ANY..

at this rate nobody can process information and mass effect is a sexual game where you can have sex with aliens and bullet storm is a rapist simulator and of course GTA train you to do columbine massacres .

The above is of course false but with internet and all the information available it's no escuse to be uninformed when everyone is available within 2 clicks

Sex in video games aren't bad when it ties into the story properly. Catherine looks great. But games like "rape lay" shouldn't be made at all.

Baka-akaB2789d ago (Edited 2789d ago )

rapelay is crap but it got every right to be made . At least as much as stuff like Manhunter or mortal kombat .
Just like people got the right to skip that turd

They wanted scapegoat so made a fuss over a quite sh*tty game with weird concept , but conveniently all forgot that the rapist get killed in the end .

While every hero in ultra gory games are peachy

cochise3132789d ago

No, rape lay is just plain perversion. It doesn't matter if the rapists dies at the end. That type of crap shouldn't be made.

Gohadouken2789d ago

some other games are sheer perversion too and no one cares . It shouldnt be up to blind censorship to decide if it should exist or not , only that it never reach the wrong public .

I find it even more disgusting to have fake rape stories with real live porn actors and actresses , and yet it is widely accepted and barely mentioned . I doubt it gets more disturbing and realistic than that

Rocket Sauce2789d ago (Edited 2789d ago )

Over the top violence in Mortal Kombat doesn't really bother me, but I'd be pretty disturbed if the new game had Scorpion having buttsex with a crying 12-year-old Raiden.

Baka-akaB2789d ago

Catherine's saving grace is that it will be under the radar and wrongfully deemed as weaboo crap by most ... so it probably wont meet the scorn "We dare " is getting right now .

Hell look at the comments we usually gets , even regular videogame news readers from the site can sometimes not see anything else in the game , so yeh again i thinkl its safe .

Vesemir2789d ago (Edited 2789d ago )

It's high time for our dearest americans to get over this thing. It's not a big deal, c'mon guys.
I know you can do it.

What's the big deal about erotic content on games?
We have dudes smokin crack on GTA4. And I think it's cool, don't get me wrong, lol.

That's the world we live in.

It was just a few days ago, Charlie Sheen apppeared on TV saying he smoked 7 rocks/day and throw orgies sprinkled in cocain is his mansion or something.

There should be a videogame about Charlie Sheen's life just to see how that works, lol.

Twilla2789d ago (Edited 2789d ago )

We already have copious amounts of sexin' going on in videogames. It's not the focus in Catherine from what I've seen and what WAS shown was cleverly censored. I'd understand if it was ONLY about that and they had you involved, but it doesn't look that way. Have you seen the gameplay trailer? The brutal gore? The disturbing monsters? No? Well, you should probably check it out.

I wouldn't know for sure, anyway. The game isn't here yet and I don't do imports.
