School Shooter: North American Tour 2012:

OXCGN:

"Ladies and Gents, The Line Has Finally Been Drawn"

"The road to video games becoming a common commercialized medium has been a long, bumpy, formidable road. It’s safe to say that we’re still traversing that path, even in our current state of mainstream openness.

"When you think we’ve finally hit a sweet spot in the industry where there is no commotion or Fox News attacks, something pops up to disturb the peace yet again.

"This time, our subject is an obscure Source engine mod. The name of said mod? School Shooter: North American Tour 2012."

To put it simply: utterly ridiculous.

ComboBreaker4831d ago

it's okay to shoot hookers in GTA because they're hookers, they're less than human.

But it's not okay to shoot students in a video game because students are more real than hookers in a video game.

BadCircuit4831d ago

I don't think it should be okay to shoot hookers willy nillie either. There should at least have to be 'plot' reasons for it.

So this school thing is just poor taste.

-Alpha4831d ago (Edited 4831d ago )

The same excuse used for approving shooting hookers in GTA (and I'm sure most people here have ran over civilians in the game) can likely be applied here. I am not condoning this, nor am I making an argument against it.

But I see absolutely no reason why this line can be drawn without some sort of double standard being applied. If anything, it's a matter of poor timing. We can play games today that simulate real life situations/events from the past that nobody may care about today.

I can agree with games being contextual (like BadCircuit above said)

The major difference however, is that you are shooting kids and in this scenario it's a simulation of Columbine. However, most gamers argue it's entertainment/harmless pixels for other games, so I can see that same argument being applied here.

It's a moral issue of finding entertainment in a tragedy that is close to many people still today, but I remember people also getting upset over playing as the Taliban and we all know how gamers felt about that

In the end the game is harmless since no one is forcing you to play it. But it's still a little twisted and disturbing, something that can be said about a lot of games we may usually play today anyway

BadCircuit,

I always though the plot reason for being able to kill hookers in GTA games is that the main character is invariably a psychopathic mass murderer.

MAJ0R4831d ago (Edited 4831d ago )

eh it's obviously just people exercising their rights, even though it is wrong

kancerkid4831d ago

I like how the 'gamers' on this site say this game is in "poor taste" or "wrong," when the same people have played at least one game where you kill a person.

How does a thinly veiled plot device make the game any more acceptable? Who has not gone on huge murder sprees of civilians in GTA?

Poor taste my ass. And Kratos surrounded by large breasted women, implying he screwed them all was in good taste? Chainsawing aliens in half in Gears of War is in good taste?

If you don't like it, don't play. But don't sit their with your hypocritical opinions about how this is the worst thing to happen in gaming, because we have been face first in filth as long as I can remember, and I like it that way, Because it shows some people have the guts to expand the medium.

LOL I can see this opening one massive cans of good old worms! It's gonna get ugly and I can see FOX all over this one when they see this..

Proeliator4831d ago

Let's hope it remains an obscure mod...

Nightshadow4831d ago

Here here, it's a few bad apples like this that gives all games a bad name.

Godem4831d ago

will be keen to hear the upcoming rage from news places..

Im sure this won't help justify giving R18+ to Australia though.... all the people in the against side will use this as their prime example. Like when Atkinson kept quoting Rapelay(I think thats what its called)

XboxOZ3604831d ago

It's a sad sad day when a developer, albeit an indie one (modder) decides to actually use such a topic for a game . ..

It's individuals like this that put real publishers and their development studios they represent under the microscope.

They are the ones that suffer the most, both financially and in regards to closing studios, and thus ppl loosing work.

Just do not know what floats between some ppl's ears, probably nothing.

SactoGamer4831d ago

This is so far past the line that you can't even see the line anymore!

Ducky4831d ago

The line is a dot to them!

I never got around to mass effect - I’m skeptical that it would hold up if I were to try it now

Furesis27d ago

I would say it does. The combat is a bit shit for todays standards but everything else is great.

anast27d ago

It's worth a play through today.

I can't fk with this list. They missed on alot of games probably before the writers times. Also I know people loved some portal but I was never a fan.

Tomb Raider 1
Driver 1
Abe’s Odyssey
FF6
King of Fighters 94
Mortal Kombat OG

Street Fighter 2
Resident Evil 1

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name70d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno70d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood70d ago (Edited 70d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno69d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure69d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
