PS3 sales dip in Jan. at U.S. retail

Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 dipped in year-over-year figures in the latest U.S. retail data for Jan.

NPD Group Inc. this month reported that the PS3 sold 267,000 units in Jan., down three percent from the year prior.

The system is 4 years old and it's still 300 bucks at retail -- This is indication of a problem. Check computer prices for 4 year old hardware then and today. Sony needs a price drop, and not some 30 dollar one. They need to get to mass market, 199.99 price and they need to do it this year.

a 199.99 ps3 price will assure that Sony will never make a profit on the system. If Sony is aiming at a 199.99 price it would have to get voted on buy the stock and shareholders where there money is involved.

Brand recognition popularity has shifted faster then I thought. What you said is a sign of Sony losing casual interest and market share. PS2 was so successful because Sony was able to appeal to their needs. Now that motion has won over casual vs platformers Sony is really showing how wrong they are for trying to market a causal device as hardcore with hardcore games. Most consumers willing to spend money on gaming are casual and won't be playing KZ3 with Move LMAO

I think the drop comes from the Playstation's lack in bundles. If the system dropped $50, bringing it to $250 with a bundled game, Sony would get more sales in the long run, as parents buying systems for their kids would see it as a steal.

Pay attention almost every month last year Vghartz had the 360 outselling the PS3. Every month the media said that the PS3 sales are dwindling. While the mighty 360 was destroying the PS3. Yet when it was all said and done, the PS3 sold the same amount of consoles as the mighty 360 during the holidays. The best part of it all was the fact that M$ released a 360 slim, Kinect, and their franchise game Halo Reach. The 360 still got outsold by 2.3m. Vgchartz had the 360 selling 14m for 2010 but the real numbers came out and they had to change it. Vgchartz is the one with blind faith.

Anything Microsoft announces this year will most likely come out in 2012. All Microsoft has the year is Gears 3, Forza 4, Halo remake, some new ips that won't be good enough to get sequels and some Kinect games.

Hehe. PS3 is still the same price from last year when the PS3 slim was introduced WITH the price drop. The release of the with the drop to 299 skyrocketed sales of PS3 last hoilday season. In any case 3% drop is very small.
